“Worth a trip to Van Horn just to stay here!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2011

Here's why I gave sleep quality, rooms and cleanliness fewer than 5 stars: this is a "vintage" hotel built in the 30s and the rooms are small. The only furniture in our room was two beds and two nightstands. Nothing else would fit. The bathroom absolutely will not accommodate more than one person unless one is in the tub. The bathroom door will not open fully because it will hit the TV. The walls are not as soundproofed as those in more modern hotels. Perhaps that's why the hotel provides ear plugs. And we found a room key envelope with a dirty toothpick on the windowsill when we checked in. But I applaud those trying to preserve our heritage and we'll stay here again if we're in Van Horn at bedtime. Even if you don't stay, you should visit. It's quite a place. My photos are too large for upload but will soon be posted at www.wildgenwest.shutterfly.com

My husband and I were traveling to Phoenix from San Antonio. Our mid way stop was going to be Van Horn. Again, I read the trip advisor reviews for this hotel and was not disappointed. The room was small but clean. The bed was very comfortable. I especially enjoyed the ceiling can above the bed. Yes, there were several trains passing through, However, my sleep was not disrupted. The only negative was no coffee maker in the room. There was plenty in the lobby. Great place to stay for a night when traveling west.

You wouldn't think that Van Horn, Texas would have such a first-rate and architecturally-significant hotel as the El Capitan. Van Horn is on a desolate stretch of I-10 east of El Paso so this Trost & Trost-designed hotel is a welcome respite and sight. The Paisano in Marfa is also a Trost design and both are operated by the same traveler-friendly family. And the restaurant is beyond any expectation you might have for food so close to the interstate. Definitely worth an overnight stay.

This historic hotel and stop along the way between almost nowhere and El Paso was orginally a Henry Trost designed hotel. It is one of a group of 4 historic hotels in the delightful far west part of Texas. The rooms are not spacious but the beds are comfy and everything has been renovated. A walk down the narrow halls to your rooms opens to a fully equipped bedroom with desk, lounge chair and bed. The bath is a tub/shower combo but all is brand new. The bar and the lobby have great character and are definitely interesting. The seating area outside is great for a view of the night sky and a drink to relax. If you are going this way you definitely should choose this hotel over the uninteresting alternatives. Our stay included a nice buffet style breakfast-not chef managed but still good.

Very nicely recreated hotel with great atmosphere. Room furnishings were very high quality. Room was quite small and the hotel has no gym or pool but it is far better than all the souless chains around the freeway in this town.

Nice but pricey restaurant - again far better than anything else in this town.

We stopped off en route to Big Bend and while we had a good night's stay we would probably drive on to the next town if we had our time over again.

Breakfast was included and its average - better than a cake and a coffee but not really much more than Super 8 standard.

What a treat this place was!! Happened to see a billboard for this charming place in New Mexico on our drive back home from California. Van Horn seemed to be a good stopping place, so I called to reserve our room. When we arrived, Joe was very friendly and attentive, and our room was available. The room was small, but nicely decorated with a very comfortable bed. The bathroom was small as well, but very nice as well. The room had everything we could possibly need. The restaurant inside the hotel was fabulous!!! Our waitress was very friendly, and the food was great!!! They had a decent wine selection as well. If ever we need to stop for the night in this little town, I definitely will be staying at the El Capitan!!

This was our third visit to the hotel and, thankfully, we found the same friendly service and comfortable rooms. The bar has a good selection of beer and wines and the food in the restaurant is good. We found the lady tending bar a little "unfocussed" as she kept going in the kitchen and not paying attention to the bar. However, the service was still pleasant and the food good and fairly priced. Not the cheapest rooms in Van Horn but well worth the money.
