As the title suggests, this Marriott had it's highs and lows. It is located about 20 miles north of Houston off of I-45. It was easy enough to find, but figuring out how to get to the entrance was tricky. We ended up in a parking garage and had to have the attendant direct us from there. A sign or two with an arrow would help.
Once inside we were pleased with the large and nicely decorated lobby. We were checked in quickly. Our room on the 11th floor faced the so-called "waterway." Sorry to be a downer, and this has nothing to do with the hotel, but this "waterway" is nothing more than a filthy man made river. Sorry... Anyway, the room itself was typical Marriott (a good thing) with the usual decor and amenities. As usual, the bed was very comfortable.
I've read several other reviews praising the concierge staff. Unfortunately, our experience was less than we have come to expect. I wanted to go for a run outside. I saw lots of folks running along the river and I asked the concierge how to access it, where it went, what the mileages were, etc. He had no idea and instead gave me a map of the trolley route. I ended up running on the treadmill in the workout room for the two days I was there. We also asked for some recommendation for restaurants outside of the hotel, and were basically told there were lots of places to eat nearby, but wern't given any suggestions other than the hotel restaurant.
Having said this, the staff in the concierge lounge itself was excellent both nights. We were directed to several restaurants that we enjoyed. These ladies (Violet in particular) were very friendly and fun to chat with. The concierge lounge itself is very comfortable and has excellent food in the morning and evening. Kudos here.
The last comment has to do with valet parking. We knew we were leaving very early in the morning to catch a flight, so I asked the night before if someone would be available to get our car. We were told that if nobody answered the phone we would have to walk across the street to the attendant's booth where someone would be on duty. Not a good start. When I called in the morning there was no answer. I called the front desk. No answer. I went downstairs and walked across the street to the booth. Nobody there. I finally went to the front desk, and after several calls they found an attendant who retrieved our car.
This is definitely a nice hotel in a nice area (lots of shopping and restaurants nearby). We would come back. However, there is room for improvement in the areas noted above. Not bad overall...
