“Great Place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2013

I was pleasantly surprised by this hotel after staying at another hotel in Surfside that I have nicknamed The Bates Motel. We stayed in a double queen room in the newest building. The room was very clean and the bed was one of the best beds I've ever slept on anywhere! The room only had a shower even though the room description makes it sound like it has a tub so ask for a room with a tub if that's really important to you. In a town where good customer service is pretty much non-existent, it was nice to have a friendly and helpful front desk staff.

The restaurant was expensive and not very good. The kitchen and wait staff had music blasting from the kitchen and weren't too terribly interested in waiting on tables or cooking. Our hamburgers were under-cooked and the fries tasted like they were friend in week old grease.

The hotel is right across the bridge from the best bait shop in town (Salt Grass Bait), is close to several boat ramps, and is a short drive from San Luis Pass. We will definitely stay here again!

We pride ourselves in having great customer service and making our guest experience something they will not forget. After seeing your review I looked at our descriptions and noticed some rooms listed incorrectly with shower/tub. If a tub is something that is a must please check with us that you did book a room with a tub. We are going through some changes at the Cafe and invite you back on your next visit to try it again. Thank you for your feedback and we look forward to your next visit.

We took a quick weekend trip to Surfside and stayed in the Ocean Village units that were kitchenettes. The supplies in the kitchen were very limited, but workable. I would have enjoyed a newer mattress on the king-sized bed. But I gave the place 4 stars for the spectacular view and for being RIGHT on the beach. We will definitely go back! They have dog friendly rooms at a minimal charge. The beach was so quiet and it felt like we have a private beach area to ourselves! We had a great deck to relax at. Loved, loved , loved this place!

Room Tip: Lots of steps, so if that's a concern, this is not for you....

The hotel had nice, small rooms with great views. It is the best and cleanest hotel in Surfside, so it's a little overpriced. But you can walk right out to the beach and its nice to have a restaurant right there as well. Bring water to drink! The well water in Surfside does not taste good!

We stayed here for 1 night as part of our Texas tour. We arrived early but was pleased to hear the room was ready. Be aware there are quite a lot of steps to this property so not good for infirm or elderly. The room was ok but very small and cramped. The bathroom is tiny and the washbasin is in the main room. Also there is nowhere to hang any clothes so I wouldn't want to stay for long. The balcony was very nice although the seating was a small wooden bench but a nice view of the ocean. We didn't go far as we were in need to a bit of relaxation so sat near the restaurant/bar and had a few drinks. The service was fine. I enjoyed the peace and quiet and watching the pelicans fishing in the gulf. We ate there a little later, the food was ok but nothing to write home about, very limited menu, we had the burgers. We then had the invasion of mosquitos so had to retire to our room. We slept well as it is very quiet. We ate breakfast in the restaurant and again it was just ok, maybe should have waited til we got the Galveston. For someone from the UK this was an experience but wouldn't rush back.

I stayed in the 400 building with an amazing ocean view room. What really made my stay amazing was the staff. I had to make several changes to my reservation due to personal problems. I dealt with a women named Anna through out my stay there. She was always smiling and really outgoing and willing to do ANYTHING to make our stay wonderful. Or trip there was magical because of her. We will be back but only if she is still there. The other lady we met was rude and unwilling to help us out. Not sure what her name is but she had pinkish hair. We would wait for Anna to come in to go to the office if we needed anything. Thank you Anna for being so friendly. The cafe has great burgers and some friendly waiters. I can't wait to come back.

Realize that this facility has 5 separate buildings. They started with a bar/café directly on the beach. Then added some rooms in a building behind the café. Then took a big house next door & cut it up into several more rooms. Then built a new 2 story raised building 100 feet away with several more rooms. They also have 6 King Suites w/kitchens, about a 1/2 miles away, also right on the beach. So all the buildings have great locations on the beach, which is what keeps guests arriving. We had rooms in more than 1 location & the double rooms w/balcony in the other locations were OK with good enough housekeeping & furnishings. However, the King Suites w/kitchens are nothing as advertised online. There is no pull out sofa in the living room. Ours had an old run-down futon with cigarette burns in it. Certainly not something you would want to sleep on. No lounge chair w/ottoman in the bedroom. Could not have even gotten a chair/ottoman in a room this small with the king bed. No closet. Just a bar on the wall with no hangars. Smallest shower we have had in a motel room. A big person could not get it in. Kitchen was dingy & depressing. Stove had burns & dirty tin foil underneath the burners & in the bottom of the oven. Neither had been cleaned in some time. They advertise a fully equipped kitchen, but don't believe that & take everything -- absolutely everything you might need or want to cook with --there were enough plates, cups, saucers & bowls for 4 persons. 1 big plastic bowl, 1 skillet & 2 small pots, that were in such terrible shape that we didn't even consider using them. Throw this junk out & get something clean & useable management. Coffee pot was OK "after" we washed it. A few eating & cooking utensils, but glad we brought lots of plastic ware. Worst part is that this unit has not had a factual, heavy-duty scrub-down & cleaning in a long time. Window sills had dead bugs, flies etc. Stove was disgusting. All floors needed mopping --- with soap/cleanser & not just water housekeeping, Kitchen table/4 chairs & 2 bar stools were OK. Otherwise, there was no other seating. At $160 a night it was grossly overpriced. Let me finish on a positive note however --- the location is beach front & wonderful, with a big deck to enjoy. So we will return, but not to the King Suites --- we'll stick to the regular rooms in the "newest" building. The place just seems to be screaming for better professional management. Great concept & there is obviously a demand for the location, so I wish them well.

We are currently doing many improvements to our facilities. Some of these include new furniture, updating the cookware, and some touch ups from the wear and tear over the high season. We hope that you come back and visit us again to enjoy the new improvements.

The water at Surfside is cleaner than Galveston's but they don't clean up the algae on the sand, all over the place. There is a tiny path on the beach, between the hotel and beach where cars with permits can pass by, which I didn't know...photos don't show that so be careful with the kids! Our room wasn't ready at 3 but around 3:30. Once we went to the room, it was clean, but a bit tight. The bed was comfortable for me but too soft for my husband. They had everything stated but even though not stated, there were no hangers and no hooks...? We're at the beach, many wet items, we need more hooks! The restaurant and waiters were just ok...I overheard one waiter mistreating a waitress. They took a long time to get the orders, to bring the food, the eggs were greasy and coffee too strong..bitter. Overall though, the weather was great for beach, the beach was awesome, quiet (even though there were many people) and at least their smoothies tasted pretty decent. I would go again but for a lower price. We paid $179 a night for the newer building (#400s)...last minute booking (of course!) for Labor Day weekend!!

Room Tip: Ask which rooms/buildings are pet-friendly in case you have allergies.

I'm glad to hear that your stay overall was good. We are adding some new things to the rooms to make our guest stay more enjoyable and relaxing. Although the beach in front of the Hotel is drivable there is no parking allowed. This gives our guest a beach all to themselves to enjoy. I hope that you can come back and visit us again soon!
