“Bugs everywhere!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2011

I sincerely wish we had read these reviews before staying here. We stayed in Country Cabin. It is over 200 years old, which makes the architecture very interesting. However, the owners do not take care of this cabin at all. As mentioned in previous reviews, the front and back door are not sealed and have cracks in them. This allows bugs to come in freely. We saw bugs everywhere, including wasps, huge spiders, crickets in our bed, and 2 SCORPIONS inside the cabin!!! One of the scorpions had babies on her back... so disgusting. We had to spray Raid inside and out. The bed was old with a huge dip in the middle of it, so that we both kept rolling into the dip as we slept. The water has a metallic taste and smell, so that we decided to brush our teeth with bottled water. The toilet, bathtub, and sink are BROWN from rust. They only left us half a roll of toilet paper, so we had to go out and buy our own. The kitchen is small with poor quality kitchenware - the only knife to cook with is a rusty steak knife. The grill is not functional - the grate had a big hole in it. Also, there is cow dung literally EVERYWHERE on the property and a dead cow carcass. I know it is a ranch, but if the owners knew that guests were coming for a holiday weekend, you would think they would have someone come clean some of it up and fumigate the cabin. We are very laid back people and chose this cabin because it looked interesting and rustic, but this was TOO rustic for me. We noticed that the couple staying in the cabin next to us left after one night, and all of the other cabins (5 of them) appeared to be empty on Memorial Day Weekend. That says a lot. The website and brochure make this property look much better than it really is. I would not recommend this B&B to anyone.

Thank you so much for your constructive comments on Trip Advisor. We have taken your letter to heart and made quite a few much-needed improvements to our B&B house called "Country Cabin". We have installed a nice door with lock and door frame that fits snugly. Regarding insects, we thoroughly treated the house inside and out, and did the same for the entire yard, and will continue to do so. We've installed a filter system that removes rust, scale, dirt, fine sand and silt from the water supply (we are on a country water well that helped raise lots of very healthy children). We installed a special in-line heating element that helps remove the slight sulfur odor in the water. Our kitchen is now fully equipped with a 4 burner electric cook top (no oven), microwave, toaster, coffee maker, apartment size fridge, cookware, plates, glasses, tableware, and utensils. We've poured a very nice concrete slab patio, added comfortable metal outdoor furniture and installed a new grate in the grill. We all realize this is a working cattle ranch where the cows are free to roam. While we have fences and gates around the B&B to keep the cattle out of the yard area next to the house, the cows do occasionally find the gates left open and the cows welcome themselves inside. We are much more attentive now to keeping the gates closed. And, we have stopped feeding the cows near the front of the cabin, so they no longer spoil the area near the yard. So, the house is all fixed up, updated, and ready for new guests to visit and enjoy a real country cabin on a real Texas working cattle ranch with hundreds of natural, beautiful acres. Thank you for your suggestions and also the compliment about our website and brochure.

We too were misinformed from the pictures on the website. Don't waste your hard earned cash on this place. You know it's country when you can see daylight thru the cracks in the wooden walls and feel a huge breeze come thru the "backdoor"--wasn't even a real door . A very hard rain came the 1st night and to our surprise--the house didn't leak. I'm sure they're trying to keep an 1801 house like it used to be, but if you're gonna charge $95.00 night---I expect more than pretty pictures.

Creaking bed/ poor quality sheets. Terrible towels--quality that I normally use only for rags around my house. It wasn't dirty, but gave me the creaps knowing I'm out in the country and bugs can get in. When I pulled the sheets back to inspect upon arriving, I was greeeted with a bee that evidently got trappped under the covers. Cabin had a musty smell, maybe hadn't been rented out in a while. I can see why. The only positive I see, is the rural setting. Cows wake you up--that's cool and property is very natural on a dirt road, away from traffic--it's in the country, literally. I chose this place based on location--near Stonewall and Fredericksburg for viewing the Hill country wild flowers.

Owners need to take out the door, update bathroom fixtures, put newer towels out and update bedding--then it'd be OK. Bkfst also consisted of muffins from HEB, bananas, orange juice and creamer that had expired date. Not what we expect had B&B's.

Not the best of experiences. We were warned it was country--but this was a little much! Owners don't get it.

Since you posted your comments, we have been very busy improving Country Cabin. I'm really excited and pleased with the updating progress. We have insulated and put in wooden walls (maintaining the rustic look) in the living room. No more daylight showing through, and nice and cozy now. The back door and frame has been replaced (with a very tight fit) so no more breeze blowing through. The bath room is also being updated. We bought some fluffy white towels and also a new lavatory with cabinet. The lavatory isn't installed yet, but I'm expecting it won't be long! We have throughly treated the inside and outside cabin area for insects, so you can be alone in the cabin. We've recently poured a concrete patio area and put in metal outdoor furniture for you to relax and enjoy the great outdoors right from the cabin. Thanks for your comments that helped spur us on with important upgrades to these traditional ranch buildings. We look forward to impressing you with these very favorable results.

Stayed part of one night in their unit named Olivia's Haus.
Packed up and left at 5am due to dilapidated condition of entire house, uncomfortable bed that squeaked and groaned when you moved. Breakfast 'food' provided was a grocery store bought ring cake, bowl of low quality fruit, milk and juice.
Very run down facility. Promotional photos, descriptions, and web site are totally misleading.

Did not visit other 4 properties on their land, but I dont expect any significant improvement. I do not believe that these people have any clue as to how to run a good B&B.

Have stayed in better hunting and fishing 'camps'.

We appreciate your constructive comments so we can make Olivia's Haus more appealing and comfortable for our future guests. Since you posted your comments, we have remodeled in the kitchen, dining room, and living room. We removed all of the old cabinets in the kitchen and dining room and put in fewer new ones, this makes the two rooms more spacious. We took out the wall between the kitchen and dining room, and put in a half wall to make more counter space. We tiled the counter and also around the sink. We redecorated these two rooms in red rooster decor, very country. We put in new venetian blinds in both bedrooms, living room, and dining room. We put beaded ceilings in the living room, dining room, and part of the walls of the bathroom. The whole inside of the house was repainted and new linoleum installed on all the floors. Outside we added metal outdoor furniture. I'm sure you will enjoy the improvements. We look forward to your next visit.
