“Good Bottle Shop, Average Wine Bar”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2011

We have often shopped at Farpointe for many types of wine, and the guys in the bottle shop are friendly and knowledgeable. They have often offered (and we accepted) the "instant chiller" they have on premises to chill down a bottle of champagne/dessert or white when we were bringing it immediately to an event. The prices are mostly reasonable, and they offer a purchase discount on a case or more. It is fun to do some tastings with them when they have bottles open on the weekends inside the store.

The wine bar is a different story. We have tried it few times now - once for a glass or two with friends, sometimes for a special tasting being offered, and three or four times to do flight tastings. The staff here has no knowledge of wine whatsoever. They are not friendly (to us and our friends at least), and we often find ourselves sitting for long stretches of time with no wine and/or no food. I believe there must be a group of locals who come here often and/or are friends of the staff, because the staff almost always spends all their time, attention and pours at one table. In one instance, we noticed flights being generously poured at the table next to us with lots of chatty banter, but when we finally got the staff's attention, we barely got the name of the wine and the standard stopper pour.

I am saddened by this service every time we go because we REALLY want to like this wine bar. They often have interesting wines on the pour list (And yes, for those concerned about my wine-snobbery knowledge level, I DO know something about wine - we used to live in the Napa Valley), it is really close to our home and we love the guys next door. Please, please get some knowledgable, friendly staff for the wine-bar.

“Good wines...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2011

Like any place the service can be hit or miss. Usually the staff in the wine bar are fairly friendly - mostly with the regulars. They may or may not be as knowledgeable as the guys in the retail section but the one thing Farpointe has going for it is the selection - not a huge selection, but I've never had a bad wine there. They know how to choose 'em.

“Maybe the best wine bar I've seen!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2011

Most so-called "Wine Bars" sell you grocery store swill for $10 a glass, but not this place! We did the weekend tasting - Champagne and Cabernet. I had a flight of Cabernet - 5 tastes at 2oz each for $20, with the wines ranging from $20 to $60 a bottle at the shop next door - every wine was terrific. My wife did the Champagne flight with equally satisfying results. Throw in a cheese platter, and we were so full we decided to skip dinner. Overall a great experience for the price, and we'll definitely be back."

I skimmed the reviews below and am not sure what "dynaman" and "robin06" look for in a wine bar, but this place had it all - service, atmosphere and top-flight wines. Maybe they are just not used to higher-quality wines. They should probably stick with the Texas wines that they are used to...

“Great Selection and Ambiance, Pleasant and Knowledgeable Staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2010

Their weekly wine tastings are terrifiic. How terrific? I drive over an hour to taste at Farpointe rather than the numerous much closer veneus.

Honestly, the store has a broad range of prices and wine styles, and they will track down that obscure bottle your friend told you about. The wine bar is staffed with knowledgeable people who can help you choose what you might like to explore, recommend a tasting flight, or give you some privacy if you prefer. After a couple of visits they remember your name as well as your wine preferences. There may be a better wine bar - but I haven't found one.

“Great staff, great wines!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2010

I've been going to Farpointe for a couple of years now, and it has rarely disappointed. The store has a wide selection of wines, many of which you won't find at other wine specialty stores. The staff is a knowledgeable collection of people who truly enjoy wines and are happy to listen to what your tastes are and point you to some treasures you might have otherwise overlooked.

The bistro has a solid list of menu wines available throughout the week, along with snack sized dishes of cheeses, meats and other selections. The real fun is on the weekends, though. Every weekend they offer three different flights: two flights of five wines, and one "bonus" flight of higher end wines, usually all following a weekly theme. Wineries and winemakers regularly visit the bistro during the week when they feature flights of their wines and special prices, and on Thursday nights they have "BYOP", bring your own pizza night with bottle discounts. It's worth getting on their email list to find out what special events are coming up. Their patio area is a popular spot to enjoy nice weather and some good wines. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, managed by a certified sommelier.
