“Average to Poor”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013 via mobile

It's a fairly new LQ and it is about the same as the others. This one has a very small swimming pool, but a nice cabana. Only steps to the beach, which was nice. Two chairs and an umbrella will cost you $25 for the day, but I don't think the hotel has anything to do with it.

The breakfast at the hotel is less than desirable and if there is one improvement immediately, this would be it. High fat, low quality food was the order of the day. Don't waste your time. YUCK. Even the coffee is marginal. For the money, try to book early somewhere else. Parking is free but limited on weekends when a lot of people are in town. Get a spot and hold on to it.

We stayed here 2 nights and didn't want to leave. The La Quinta is located on the north part of the island and was very easy to find. The outside was well maintained and the lobby was neat and clean. The guy at the front desk (I think his name was Damazo) was so friendly and helpful. There is a bar and grill on the premises and many other restaurants nearby. Our room was fantastic! It was huge and had a jacuzzi, a wet bar, love seat, a small table with 2 chairs, and a coffeetable. The balcony that looked out on the Gulf of Mexico had 2 chairs. There was a refirgerator, microwave and coffeemaker. AC was loud but worked well for us as "white noise". There was 1 luggage rack and we used the low dresser to hold our 2nd suitcase. The bathroom was large and clean. Breakfast was on the 4th floor in a huge conference room with many tables and extra room to move around. They served waffles, breakfast tortillas, scrambled eggs with peppers, scrambled eggs with sausage (some plain scrambled eggs would have been nice), yogurt, fresh fruit, muffins, bagels, juices, milk, coffee, cereals.

Room Tip: Room 340 was fantastic!

The room is reasonably priced for the location. The hotel was overall clean and the customer service was great. I would definitely stay here again when I visit South Padre Island. You have direct access to the beach, fitness center, business center and pool. I feared there was going to get loud at night but this was not the case.

On a visit to family for Easter we stayed at the La Quinta Inn on South Padre Island. We've stayed here previously when we needed a quiet respite from family craziness. While the hotel itself is little changed from previous visits the environs around it has. Previously at the quiet end of South Padre Island, it is quiet no more!

The hotel itself retains the same qualities that we've enjoyed previously. Our room was large and clean. It had two queen beds that were comfortable. The shower was hot and the air conditioning cold. Our only issue with the room was the door to the balcony was sticky, requiring a good pull to open.

Service at the hotel was great. The front desk supplied us with some forgotten toiletry items gratis (razors, shaving cream, toothpaste). The continental breakfast was tasty, with an assortment of fruits and baked goods along with coffee, juices, texas shaped waffles and three types of scrambled eggs. The wait service poolside was attentive.

The big changes were out of doors. First- we needed wrist bracelets to identify us as guests of the hotel. I expect this was because it was Easter weekend and the island was hopping. It was not a problem for us- we've been to other hotels that required wrist bracelets. The pool now has full bar service. We were able to get some margaritas without leaving the hotel (though I did miss the old happy hour with free drinks). Not the strongest, but nice. Also new is the beachside chair and umbrella service. I've been spoiled by this service in other countries; not having it at beaches in the US is a big drawback for me. While we didn't take advantage of the service on this trip I am certain we will in the future.

The biggest change- a new beach/night club opened next door to the hotel. I liked that I could walk next door for a burger or a cocktail. On previous trips we always had to hop in the car for either. On the downside there was a stage and live music at night. Maybe they only have live music at certain times, like Easter or Spring Break. If you aren't into live music at night request a "viewside" room. These rooms overlook the dunes and hotel next door. We had a viewside room; I could make out the bass in the music, but not to a level that it disturbed me.

While we will return to the LQ in the future, we will keep an eye out for further changes that might make this hotel less attractive to us.

Room Tip: Choose a "View side" room to be away from the noise of the beach club

We keep coming back! The ocean view rooms are spectacular and the front desk always does their best to honor requests and get you into a room you are comfortable with (we usually take our vacation directly before memorial day - so this may get more difficult as the summer goes on) - but I assure you they will do everything they can.
Staff has always been friendly and smiling. On this stay - I ran into a minor work emergency where I needed a form scanned and the business center lacks a scanner. The GM himself took the paper I needed and found a way to get it to my e-mail. He did this with a smile. I know he must have had about a billion things going on in a hotel this size on a Friday - but he took my issue seriously and helped me with pleasure. Didn't even seem to stress him out (and I know he has a big job).
The views are outstanding. In the last couple years, they put a HUGE outdoor bar next door. I thought it would be a hindrance - but it is kinda cool. Music during the week is light enough unless you open the balcony door and take in some music. Weekends... well, it is South Padre - so just go with it!
CLEAN beaches. You can rent umbrellas on the beach for very little money (I think we paid $25 in the off season for the entire day). If you don't like sand - the extensive patio overlooks the ocean. Perfect place to read.
Enjoy your stay!
Housekeeping was awesome!

Room Tip: Ocean view - the higher the better the view.

This hotel does not live up to the pictures. It is not newly remodeled. It was old and very smelly. Lots of partying and drug use going on. We took our little children and had a bad time. The whole place was dirty and everything was over used and broken. Our room stunk like mildew and throw-up. Had to throw away our luggage when we returned home because it smelled so bad. I've never had such a bad experience. We didn't want to bring our children to a spring break experience. The staff seemed oblivious to all the craziness and the mess. We had to have our toilet fixed twice during our 2 day stay, once in the first 10 minutes that we arrived. The beach outside the hotel was covered in trash. We should have stayed next door at the Hilton, so much cleaner.

Room Tip: Stay away from the pool, crazy loud.

My stay was for 3 days but It was great. The service, guidance and staff was very curtious and respectful. My main concern was to get something comfortable because we were 4 persons, 3 seniors and I am on cane use, but everything was great and also it was right on the beach. The pool was great. Hopefully I'll be back soon.
