We stayed at the Isla Grand Beach Resort from 9/13-9/16/11. This was the first week of the "off season". We were celebrating our 10th anniversary. We made it to the resort earlier than we thought but were able to check in without any issues. We got to our hotel room and were very impressed with the size! It seemed huge! Everything was really clean and neat. The bed was awesome. Many hotel beds can be too hard or just plain uncomfortable but the sleep number bed was amazing. The one complaint I would have about getting to the room was that we were on the 2nd floor and there is no elevator. We had to lug our big suitcases up the stairs. We also found that there was a sliver of space at the bottom of the outside door so the wind kept whistling in. A towel thrown across the threshold solved that.
After an evening walking the beach and checking out the sites, we had a great sleep. And then were were woken up at 7am the next morning by pounding hammers and drills. Apparently the off season also means they will be renovating rooms and redoing some landscaping. It turned out that the room directly next to us was being renovated. As the hotel was not busy at all, I'm confused as to why we were given a room right next door. Then the next day we also noticed they were redoing the landscaping right outside our balcony. So in addition to the pounding in the room next door, we also got to hear the sound of digging and loud yelling. Peaceful, it was not.
The beach front was very nice. There were plenty of beach chairs and umbrellas to be used. The pool was nice and big with plenty of deck chairs. However, it seems that the off season also means that skimming the pool for leaves and debris isn't done often. As we swam we saw lots of leaves and twigs. We even found a sugar packet one day. I never saw anyone skimming the pool until the day we left. Apparently it's only done on Fridays before the weekend crowd comes in. We saw them skimming as we left the hotel.
All in all, it was a good hotel for the money. Right on the beach, clean (except for the pool), and friendly staff. The off-season timing meant we had hardly any crowd. There were times we felt like we were the only ones there! Downside is you have to deal with the hotel maintenance and the fact that many places have shorter hours (like the McDonalds closing at 9pm!)
