“Perfect trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2013

This is not a place for a luxury stay but a place where you can feel the beach lifestyle for what it is. laid back and easy going! My family and I loved the proximity to the beach, the pool and the neighbors. The furniture was a little dated and the kitchen set-up didn't match, but that added to the charm and detracted nothing from our stay. I look forward to our next visit

Thank you for a great review! Honest and direct. We love our return guests! Some are like family. We appreciate the truth in your review. Things are dated. Our hotel was built in 1961, and things are old. But it's clean, close to the beach, and economical.

The only thing good about this property was the location, it is one block from the beach! The worst things about this inn was the outdoor lights that shined through the window all night long (no drapes to block out the security lights) made it seem like daytime, all night. No shampoo, no hair dryer, had to rent dishes. No coffee for coffee pot. Party next door kept us awake the last night of our stay. We will not be returning. I think the price we paid was too much! I would rather pay three times the price!

One of the greatest things about South Beach Inn is its proximity to the beach. We are just a half block away. It's a very short walk, even shorter than from some of the beach-front hotels. As we explain on our website, we do not supply kitchen items, but the room has a full kitchen, and you are welcome to bring your own kitchen items or rent a "kitchen kit" from us for just $10. In either case, it does not include coffee. We did the math and the cost of supplying coffee outweighed the benefits. Our rooms are a little more like cabins near the beach. They offer a bed to sleep on, a shower to wash off the sand. You may want to consider it upscale camping. We have always maintained that we are not a 4-star or even a 3-star hotel, and that if you require amenities or a concierge, or services 24/7; we are not the place for you. Our outdoor lights offer security, and you can always throw a towel over the window if it bothers you that much. Also, if there was a party next door, you could have called our night-time cell phone and notified us of the problem so that we could have fixed it. South Beach Inn is generally a quiet getaway, but on a holiday weekend, that is never the case. Thank you for your business, but we'll state your title again. If you want amenities, overnight services, or luxury; please do not stay here. Thank you!

For the weekend, there was a 3 night minimum stay. I'm not sure if that rule applies every weekend or the holiday.

The rooms were okay at best. There weren't any pictures or anything to cover up the plain cinder block walls. Like the other reviewers stated, the bed was horrible. Pack some pain medicine for your back pains in the morning. Another improvement needed is to have curtains for the windows.. it was very difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep with bright lights shining through the regular blinds.

For the good part, the owners were able to accommodate our late arrival which was nice. The inn was really close to the water which is why we came in them first place.

The price was reasonable for the room. If you are more interested in the activities south padre has to offer rather than the motel, then south beach inn is a good place to stay

Thank you for your candid review. South Beach Inn is a small hotel - only 12 rooms. We offer an economical and fun getaway for the budget-minded traveler. Our proximity to the beach is one of the greatest things we have to offer, along with our pool.
For most holidays we require a 3-night minimum stay. Also, for peak-season summer weekends, we require a 3-night minimum stay. Since our rooms offer the full kitchens, and we have only 12 rooms, it just works out best this way. We offer an economical and fun getaway for the open-minded world traveler. Please refrain from booking here if you require luxury. We like our laid-back, easy-going guests who come back every year and sing our praises of how much they love it here, and hope it's here forever. Thanks again. Ss

Entered the room and thank god my wife didn't see it. A roach the size of tw male fingers greeted me at the door. Walls/floors are thin so if you are on the bottom floor it sucks to be you. And agree cheep mattresses that made horrible noises all night. Thank god I take ambien to force me to sleep.

Room Tip: Avoid at all possible

Welcome to the tropics! One of our main critters here is the "Palmetto Bug." It is completely harmless and lives in the outside vegetation all around us. And yes, they do come in. The rain in early July has brought out more bugs than usual, and we have in turn exterminated more heavily. Our Inn is exterminated on a monthly basis, so these bugs are generally found upside down, dead. Also, when we have a complaint of bugs, we offer to exterminate right then.

Our beds are Sealy hotel-quality beds. They are all new within the last 4 years.

We have purchased new pillows, linens, and comforters this year.

Also, our walls are almost all cinder block - that's the concrete block that's about 8" thick.

Finally, we have three rooms that are underneath our living quarters: 9, 10, & 11. We have a 3-yr old daughter who jumps and plays during the day between 8:00 A.M. and 9:00 P.M. And we try to book our shortest stays in these 3 rooms. They are also the last rooms we rent. However, it is July which is high season and we are sold out for most of the month. So, some guests end up in these rooms. Fortunately, for most, it's not a problem.

We really enjoyed our stay at South Beach Inn...except for one, rather large detail - the mattresses are terrible! After the first night, knowing we would be staying for another 4 nights, we drove to the nearest Walmart and bought a mattress pad. It took the edge off, but we still woke up every morning with neck and back aches. Also, some black out shades would go a long way in helping guests get a good nights' sleep. Lots of light gets in through the blindes they have there now. However, besides that, we think this little place is great. Wonderful location just a minute or two from the beach, AND the section of the beach its nearest to is one of least busy on the island - big plus! The kitchenette was great - full size fridge and oven. Everything worked well. The place was very clean and the owners were friendly and helpful. The pool was also a huge plus - clean, not busy, and right outside the front door. The other guests were quiet and respectful, but, as a nonsmoker, I would love to see this place ban smoking right outside the doors and in the pool area. The little corrider the guests use to get in and out of the hotel was sometimes filled with smokers. Yuck! Not what I wanted my little 2 year old breathing. Not a deal breaker I guess, but pretty unpleasant for this nonsmoking family. We would love to return to South Beach Inn, but would have to think long and hard about doing so unless they replaced the mattresses. They really were awful - so hard and springy! If you don't mind a bad mattress, and aren't looking for luxury (this is really more of a beach cabin, only very basic amenities are offered), then this is the place for you :-)

Room Tip: Our friends were booked in room 9, on the very end of the hotel by the office. It was TINY with no k...

Our beds are Sealy Hotel-quality beds which get replaced about every 3 years.
We replaced all of the pillows this year.
We will take this new information into consideration before we place our next bed order.

The room was fine. It was fairly clean and close to the beach. We liked having the kitchen. That saved us a lot of money on meals. The only complaint we have is, the beds are extremely uncomfortable and we woke up every morning with achy backs. Hopefully the owners get better mattresses because we would like to return.

I so wish everything could be perfect here for everyone! Our beds are Sealy hotel-quality beds. They are replaced about every 3 years.
In the spring, when we place our next bed order, we will definitely take this new information into consideration.
This year we replaced all of our pillows and most of our linens & bedspreads.
Please keep in mind that we are an economy hotel. Our full kitchens in each room allow our guests to save even more money by not eating out for every meal. We have a great pool, and most of our guests enjoy our BBQs and friendly atmosphere.
Thank you for staying with us.

It's a great place for people who would like to have a kitchenette in their hotel room. The kitchenette in our room looks brand new and works perfectly. Don't forget to bring your own shampoo and conditioner because they only provide soap in the bathroom. There were some ants on the counter and table in the evening. We kind of understand that situation because it's located in the first floor. Overall it's a very nice experience and we really enjoy staying in south beach inn

Room Tip: Bring your own shampoo and conditioner
