“A special retreat for fun and relaxation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2011

My wife, Marie, and I enjoyed a romantic adventure at Tillworth for our 28th anniversary. The rooms were cozy and impeccably decorated, the grounds were of small town charm, and the nightime stars overhead were an indescribable treat. Stars in their own right, hosts Bernard and Marilyn were gracious and welcoming to the full house of guests in attendance. For an enchanting getaway from Houston, I recommend Tillworth in the Round Top area.

This magical, charming property is wonderfully located close to the Antiques Festival. Hostess's lovely taste is reflected in all decor and thoughtful amenities. Out of three consecutive stays, the first was the very best. Service and attitude are inconsistent--couldn't have been better on first visit, spotty on second visit and quite awful on the third. Cannot recommend to other guests, as we can't safely predict what you will encounter.
Owners seem quite overburdened with caring for the property themselves. Guests serve the convenience of the host, who will not accommodate simple request for additional sheets, rudely wakes guests and asks them to leave early to accommodate his schedule. Food may or may not be served, according to owners' personal schedule. You definitely are given the sense that you are an inconvenience. Also be careful of scorpions around plumbing fixtures in the log cabins. This is a stressed property in need of more amenable staffing focused on customer service.

  • Liked — Quaint restored cabins, pretty furnishings
  • Disliked — Rude, impatient, unhelpful host; very inconsistent service

We are really sorry that this reviewer’s third visit with us was unsatisfactory.
We pride ourselves in providing exceptional service and are always attentive to guests and their needs.
In the 5 years we have been operating our inn we have been blessed with just wonderful guests many who have become personal friends.
During this time we have also been fortunate that we have only had 2 sets of guests where we had problems and requested that they did not return as their behavior was not conducive to our establishment.
In this particular instance the guest was disruptive to our other guests, extremely loud and obnoxious and would not checkout in the agreed time as per our policy. Instead, they turned up at almost midday demanding breakfast. Accordingly, the next guest had to wait to check-in as their room was not ready.
What was not written in their review was that the scorpions under the sink were dead. It is not uncommon, living in this part of the Texas countryside, to come across such insects and is why we have our inn professional sprayed – proof that it was working was that the scorpion was dead.
Despite this, we are sorry that they did not have the perfect stay with us and trust wherever they are now staying is more in accord with their needs.

I very much enjoyed my time at Tillworth Retreat. I was able to stay just before the Antique festival and knew that the guest coming were in for a treat. I was able to take a tour of the property and learn of its history from the gracious owners and hosts, Bernard & Marilyn Mendoza. Their hospitality is unmatched and I enjoyed very much their British accents. The surrounding area is peaceful and serene and even though located in the area of the small town of Round Top, Texas - the local cuisine was first class at Chef Pasquale's Restaurant.

  • Liked — Unique history with Modern conveniences
  • Disliked — There was not traffic except for the crickets. :) Loved it!
