I was booked at the Omni Mandalay in Dallas, but my business partner asked me to stay on the west side of DFW to be closer to his house so he could pick me up for meetings, go golfing, etc. He suggested the La Quinta Inn & Suites Ft. Worth NE Mall. OK - I am an Omni Hotels fan, often enjoying the Parker House in Boston, the Plantation in Amelia Island, etc., so this sounded like a major downgrade to me, but I changed my reservation anyway.
I called the hotel directly. While booking, I asked about van service from the airport and the agent asked for my flight information and explained that a van would be waiting for me. The Omni doesn't provide this service, so I was pleased so far.
When I arrived and was standing at baggage claim, William Black, the van driver, called me and told me he was about 5 minutes out. This was perfect because I was waiting for my second bag. By the time I got my bag, William had called me again to describe the color and type of van and a description of him, and where he would be. When I got my second bag and walked out, there he was. This was a private van specifically sent for me. William was extremely cordial and handled the rush hour traffic very well and carried on a pleasant conversation, including color commentary about the area. After taking my bags in to the registration desk, William headed to get dinner for his wife. I grossly undertiped him with $5 considering the $20 cost of a van to the Omni, and for that I apologize.
The hotel was another pleasent surprise. The rooms were new and nothing like I expected having stayed at the El Paso location in the past. The hotel is obviously new and well taken care of. The room was clean and the shower was great. The breakfast wasn't 5-star, but I didn't go there for the food - it was as good as any other. Being on a low-carb diet, the eggs and sausage was actually perfect for me. My business partners met with me in the lobby lounge area and it fit that purpose quite well.
Being self-employed, my travel dollars are my own, so I've learned an important lesson and saved 50% by staying at a nice property with surpurb attention by the staff. That van ride, in particular, made a believer out of me. Thank you.
Stayed on 3rd floor and it was very quiet, although I'm sure the entire property is quiet.
