“Underappreciated treasure of a museum!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2013

Well, downtown Port Arthur in the area around this museum is downtrodden, deserted and honestly pathetic. I felt comforted by the fact the police station was across the street. But enough of that. This museum is great! It covers so much history and color of the area, from the native Indian tribes that wandered the region, the flora & fauna of the area (with lots of "hands-on type things for kids), the early explorers, to notable people of the region. I particularly liked the upstairs, which featured music artists and pioneers of the general area, including Cajun music, Janis Joplin, Tex Ritter. They had a jukebox that played all those songs for free. They had pictures, "costumes," instruments. Wonderful museum. Helpful staff.

So crammed full of interesting tidbits you could look many visits & never see everything. It's a treasure trove of local pride & talent. It's impossible to go away disappointed.

“Nice Museum, Worth a Visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

If you live in the Golden Triangle it is definitely worth a visit. It is inexpensive, well maintained, and not crowded. We enjoyed the history of the area from the time of the dinosaurs to present. The displays of famous athletes and celebrities from the area is interesting as there were quite a few that we weren't aware of. Compared to other big city museums it is obviously not much, but for a few dollars and an hour or two of time it is well worth a visit.

“Very Nice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2013

Nice museum. Price is very reasonable, and the staff are nice. Very informative about Texas history, cool displays, and lots of sports and music/tv/movie memorabilia. It took us about an hour and a half to walk through.
