When we went to Belize, our favorite bar came equipped with a sand floor. Seriously.
LaPlaya has concrete, but the atmosphere is similar. This is "shack" dining at its best, a gritty hangout where you certainly won't feel out of place in sweaty beachwear, wearing your oldest flipflops.
As one might expect, the wait staff is comprised of dreadfully cute kids, they keep busy dashing back and forth to the many tables crowded inside the modest building. Chances are, from looking around inside, it won't win a health department award; but, all those concerns are wiped away when the food arrives. You'll munch ordinary chips with fine, garlic-tasting salsa during the wait, which can be substantial when the place is packed. The crab enchiladas are as good as anything you'll find on either coast. Don't bother with margaritas, no matter what the newspaper staffer said, they're comprised of mix rather than real juice, and resemble the old $3 per bottle Margarita Classico we used to pick up at the airports in Mexico, and dubbed "hot tub margaritas" for their ability to either trigger a night of passion or maybe heft the space shuttle into low orbit. At an adjacent table, a couple were enjoying guacamole, and their waiter was using two gianormous Haas avacados to do the job.
For "barefoot dining" in Port Aransas, this modest spot is the place to go.
