We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Laughing Horse, they were the most accomodating and friendly people around. When we got there, the cabins were a little warm and they came down and checked them and also brought a couple of box fans to help cool the place down faster. Other than that the place was exactly as we thought it would be. The stay was relaxing and enjoyable. If you are expecting a 4 star hotel, then you need to keep looking. But if you are looking for a blast from the past and a fun and kitschy place to stay then this is the place for you! I would highly recommend it if you want to relax and just have a great time.

My two dachshunds and I absolutely LOVE A Laughing Horse Lodge. When I visit, I feel like a welcome guest staying in the home of good friends. The management is absolutely wonderful,
completely welcoming, caring, responsive, fun, and ...did I mention they are dog lovers? The property has a wonderful feel, fun and festive, and very safe. It is only a couple of blocks from the beach. I like to go with friends or just with my dogs. Either way, it is a WONDERFUL experience! It's perfect for an old Austinite. Enjoy!!!

I thought long and hard about writing a negative review about this place because so many people seem to love it and I sincerely liked the managers of the place when I met them. If you are looking for a funky place with little or no extras- this is it. My single room had concrete floors, sheet metal walls, and a really cheap bed. It was clean and functional. But- and I hate to say it - I was awakened in the night by a large waterbug crawling across my legs under the sheets. It is close to the beach and you can park right outside your room. The price was around $75 winter rates for the cheapest room. A better value is across the street at the brand new Holiday Inn express for $89 and that includes breakfast, great bed, and no bugs. Once again, very nice people, and a cool funky property. Might have felt better if the cost of the room was $45 or so, but at $75 and up I expect more than just nice folks.

Management Response

No one in management likes to hear about unhappy customers. And, I could sense this customer's hesitation in the report. But in this case, I think we deserved just a bit better. Our standard rate in February, '06 for a single room was $39, not $75. We do have corregated metal walls in some units. Most of our customers find them a "cute and funky" decorating feature. I must admit we did have a lousy mattress in one unit. It has been replaced. Many rooms have platform beds and they can be more firm.

The bug is another matter. I am from the north and we don't have these kinds of bugs there. One of the other managers is from San Antonio and she had to explain to me about tropical climates. We spray all the units for bugs, monthly. The chemicals are the strongest allowed to still be safe to humans and pets. We even wash our blankets and bed quilts after every stay (even the Westin doesn't do that), and we clean throughly throughout. However, after saying all that, bugs can still visit. They will die a horrible death when they do, but until they are in contact with the chemicals, they can still walk... even at the Holiday Inn.

We are funky and close to the beach. We are an "original type" Port Aransas Lodge that has been updated and "funktified" into a fun cowboy camp style. We are clearly not a chain. If you want a really fun experience in Port Aransas, come alone, or with your family, and stay with us.

We came down for the weekend and were amazed at how friendly and wonderful the innkeepers were (esp. Sandy). The decorations inside the units are fun, funky and brings a smile to your face. AND these are very reasonably priced. You can't go wrong here. LOVED IT!

We used to stay at the Rock Cottages next door to the "Laughing Horse." We stayed at the Rock because they were about 100 bucks cheaper for a week...and 100 feet closer to the beach. We were wrong. A Laughing Horse Lodge has bigger rooms/homes, fantastic owners, and kitschy fun. They also love dogs...like I love my dog. After my first stay (there will be more) I sent them a thank-you-note addressed from my dog. The cottages are quirky, the owners are quirky, Port Aransas is quirky...it is great fun. If you do not like quirky then stay at the Holiday Inn in Corpus Christi and visit the aquarium.
