“Worst room ever #139”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2012

We stayed in #139 during what they consider "peak season" and it is definitely NOT worth the price. The week we were here was the week school started in Texas and there was nobody here so I do not consider that to be peak season for prices.
The room was very nasty and unclean. They didn't even mop the tile floors. The carpet is gross and needs to be shampooed. The kitchen appliances are all very old and rusty. The bathtub has rust and mildew in it. The window seals had food and I don't know what else on it. It needed to be cleaned and wiped off. The curtains were broken and the screen door to the sliding glass door was non functional. It was just sitting outside on the back porch. They had tried to fix the broken curtain with a rod that isn't even the size of the door, so it doesn't shut all the way and everybody can see into the room....all the way to the bathroom. This is important because the room is located right by the walkway to the beach and the public rinse off shower. (These are the only good things about the room.) One bar stool was broken and when my 3 year old try to sit on it the foot step "broke." It was very clear that the stool was broken before we had arrived. The clock on the wall doesn't even work. They left one nasty, old broom for us to use and no dust pan. The electricity was always going out also. The beds are extremely hard. It's just like sleeping on the floor and we had to go out and buy foam pads to sleep on. One bed was so super squeaky that we put the mattress on the floor because any slight movement would wake up the whole room from the noise. Overall, it was a terrible experience and we will never stay here again. It's cheap but there are rooms that are nicer for just as cheap or $25 more a night. And, it is well worth that extra $25. Oh, and we found ants in the room too =( We will never stay here again.

This was the most affordable efficiency/studio condo we could find with direct access to the beach and, at the end of the day, we were pleased with our experience. We stayed in #133, on the second floor with a view of the gulf. Place shows its age but all was in working condition and clean. Had one very uncomfortable, squeaky bed (my son slept fine on it but husband and I did not - switched to the better one on the second night). You can hear guests upstairs stomp across the floor, open door to porch and drop this and that on the floor. AC cooled room remarkably well for a wall unit but a bit loud. Turned it off during meals. Front desk open til midnight which allowed us to acquire more kitchen towels and trash bags but as the ringer to our phone was turned down (and we were unaware of that), we did not receive their call indicating they had towels and had no idea there was a voicemail (no light, just an intermittent click - required that ringer be turned up!). Needless to say, phone is dated. Appliances all worked well and were clean. Bring your own hot pads! Room is directly across from the nice playground and pool, picnic tables and grills and is right around the corner from the boardwalk to the beach. Many families. Recommended if you're on a budget but want to be able to walk to the beach from your room barefoot and return for meals without much hassle.

Our group stayed for Thursday thru Sunday, so 3 nights, and the bill for the room was $406ish. Our unit was 2 double beds & a kitchenette. The ac was noisy, but kept it cool. The furniture and carpet were very dirty to the touch, I wore shoes the whole time in the room, but the bath & kitchen were pretty clean. Shower was mildewy, and the flooring was peeling up in the bathroom. I did not have to pay, it was a treat from a friend, so I didn't complain at all, b/c that would be rude. But if I had forked out the money, I would have DEMANDED to be switched to a different unit. I have never been to Port A, so maybe that was a good price for the unit in that condition, but I was not impressed. I will admit that the location was good. There was a boardwalk to the beach, and the pool and grounds were maintained well. Staff was very helpful with fresh towels and paper products stocked in room every day. But I would much prefer to see the beach from my room, which you cannot from most of the rooms at Island Retreat. I think other units are nicer at Island Retreat, but ours was horrible. I think it was 221, but am not positive. Bed was squeaky and uncomfortable.

Room Tip: Choose a beach view with a recent remodel & maybe you'll fare better than me.

I have stayed at the Island Retreat a few times and I will never stay anywhere else! It is very moderately priced, the rooms are nice and comfy, the staff is friendly and accomodating, and the location is nice.

We stayed in 148 for our vacation here. It was nicely decorated, and was a great location...boardwalk straight to the beach and the condo was right in front of the very nice pool. We had one minor issue that was quickly resolved by the owner. Would stay here again if we visit Port Aransas again. We were surprised by how much seaweed was on the beach, but a local told us that the hurricane down south had stirred it up and brought it ashore here. We rented scooters and rode on the beach road, had a great time.

We stayed in #125. The location of the condos is good, although our condo did not have a view of the Gulf because we were on the first floor which was disappointing. The condo had a very comfortable bed in the bedroom and the beds in the sitting room were adequate. The kitchen was very basic, and there was a problem with lighting. The price was reasonable for the proximity to the beach.

There is a large variety of condos to choose from and it is possible to go online and see every individual unit before you decide. I have been twice with my four boys and will definitely be back. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Just a beautiful place to stay. Kid friendly and well taken care of with my only issue being the state of the roads and parking. There are quite a few large potholes that need taken care of. It would be nice if the older section was renovated to look similar to the new units with nicer landscaping as well. Overall, a wonderful experience.

Room Tip: Definitely go online and view all your choices with the virtual room viewer. The large dunes make it...
