“Family Tradition”

Mustang Island State Park

Jun 22, 2008

I have been going with my family to Mustang Island every year for the last 20 years, and we couldn't imagine spending our annual vacation anywhere else!! The area is amazing! There are always plenty of things to do and see no matter how many times you've been there! I even took my 3 month old daughter last year and she spent the entire day on the beach with us, the weather is amazing!! I know not every thing is as nice as you might expect at say...a hotel, but thats the point. Its not a hotel. Everything is accessible and clean. I love it, and can't wait to spend the NEXT 20 years going!!!

“Beaches need cleaning”

Park Rangers told us that the seaweed which covers the beaches, does not get cleaned off but stays there - provides food for the seagulls, etc. - eventually turning back to sand [not in this millineum] - not to mention the trash tangled within the seaweed and on the beach - needs lots of cleaning up for sure. The bathhouse on the beach is closed and soon to be demolished as it is beyond repair. There are 2 portapotties and the outside showers do work to wash off the sand - the bath house in the RV area needs some work as well - updating would be nice, however, the showers and toilets are all in working order. The RV park is nice and convenient to the beach and well -maintained as are the grounds around the park. The Rangers told us that the 'watch out for snakes' sign is there b/c there are rattlesnakes in the dunes - so since you can't go to the dunes all should be good - as long as the snakes know they need to stay in the dunes and not in the park - seems the snakes and gophers are in a battle over the dunes - I'm rooting for the gophers!
Hoping the State of Texas comes up with some funds to clean up and update this park - it could be a great place!

“my favorite beach”

Mustang Island State Park

The beach here is gorgeous. Whenever we go to Port Aransas, we always visit Mustang Island State Park because with my Texas state parks season pass, it's free.

When we visited in October of 2007, there were so few people around, it was like being on our own private, pristine, natural beach. There are lots of shells and sandollars to be found, especially between the jetties.

This park used to have fairly decent hot showers, but when we went last time, there was only cold water and the showers were overrun with tiny frogs (cute!) and swarms of enormous mosquitoes (eeek!)! D:

Still, it's better than riding home in wet clothes, coated with salt and sand. Hopefully, with better state funding, they'll be able to make the necessary repairs at this park soon.

“Kelp and Kite Club”

Mustang Island State Park

From the early 'Watch out for Snakes" sign, to the kelp-covered beaches, and the seven oil rigs right off shore - this is not the " island on the Gulf" one imagines or expects. Getting to the 2d story bathrooms along interminable concrete ramps is torture. Park rangers were distant and visible; wish one had mentioned the tent-crushing storm on its way...truly a memorable trip!!!!

“Need to update facilities”

Mustang Island State Park

I just stayed 2 nights @ Mustang Island State Park. The showers/restrooms need lots of work. Paint peeling everywhere... Texas Parks & Wildlife now charges an entry fee for persons 13 & over. I don't think they're using the new fee increase for any improvements.
The campsite was nice - just be prepared to hike 1/4 mile to the restrooms (sure would be nice to have a port-a-potty on the other end of parking lot). The guest host trailers were conveniently located next to the bathrooms. On the beach there was a day use area with bathrooms, but that was in worse condition (mold, portions of building look like it had been burned). The beach is clean, but I think more work could be done. I don't think I would stay here again unless I had fully self-contained trailer.
