We booked Gruene River Inn last minute during Spring Break 2012. We wanted an overnight "getaway" and I was so frustrated at the prices/night that we were being quoted. (Seriously - $300 for a 2* in Port A) Even in Gruene - we were looking at $175+/night. Noticed a friend of mine on Facebook had mentioned Gruene River Inn and started to check it out. We got a room (queen bed) for $135.00 night ($152.55 with taxes) that was 1/4 mile from historic gruene, offered a jetted bathtub for two, and a balcony with a described killer view. We tend to gravitate towards "one of a kind" hotels versus the typical big box chains - so, this place really fit the bill.
Upon arrival (we were there about 30 minutes before checkin) we were warmly greeted and given our room keys (Pedernales Room). We were on our motorcycles and the desk guy actually walked my husband down to show him a great place to park our bikes. He was super friendly - ask where we were from, etc. etc. We unloaded and I was thrilled with our room. Husband wasn't so big on the little out-dated TV - but, it turns out we never even watched TV at all. Room was quaint - had it's own gas stove (we were using A/C so no feedback) and a deck with a small table and two chairs. View had to be one of the best in New Braunfels area. Awesome! Sits high on a hill so you can see for miles and miles - but directly overlooks the Guadalupe River below. Part of the river in view is smooth sailing, but there is also an area of small rapids. (Note: The Guadalupe is a constant 72 degrees - we were there in March and people were in the water floating in tubes in bathing suits. It was about 78 - 80 degrees that day) Room had wood floors and an armoire that served as a closet. There was a chair and a small table inside as well. (see pictures) The bathroom did have a nice big bathtub for two and it worked perfectly. All was VERY clean and neat. The lobby is nice and has a gathering area and lots of complimentary snacks. There are also sodas that are availble on the "honor system". We walked down to Gruene during the day and visited some shops and Gruene Hall for some live music and cheap beer ($1.75). I bought a beer at the Gruene River Inn when we returned ($2.00) Not sure what they charge for wine - but it is also available for purchase. Was nice to sit out on the balcony and drink a couple of beers before heading out to dinner. We walked back to Gristmill for dinner and then to Gruene River Grill for dessert/night cap. Overall A+ positive experience.
Things to consider:
*All wood floors make it a bit loud - noise does carry from room to room. We were downstairs and I would suggest you try and book upstairs if possible. The people above us were quite "lively" during the night (and early morning!) and we could hear (quite distinctly) the bed thudding.
*We love to hike and we walk 3.5 miles everyday for exercise - so the 1/4 mile walk to/from town was not a big deal for us. However, you need to be aware that it is a bit of a walk and there are not sidewalks. (Come on Gruene - use some of your tax dollars to build a sidewalk since there is so much growth in this area) Since you are walking at night in an area where people are leaving a dance hall -- you should be aware of cars and step out of the way as they are coming down the street) Of course, it is an easy drive down - we were on motorcycles, so preferred to walk.
Overall - Great ambiance - Super friendly servcie - Perfect view & location - Reasonable Price. We will be back!
