Description: Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years. Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building. Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.

“Not for the heat challenged”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2014

A group of us tried the Gristmill because we heard food was good and a great atmosphere. Definitely pretty to be under trees and to look out over the river. Problem is that we didn't realize this restaurant is completely "open aired" and when temperature is a humid 102 degrees at 6:00pm, this does not make for a good dining experience. When asked to be seated indoors, we were unaware there was no a/c and would placed in a section that had no breeze except for the overhead fans. Outdoors did not seem to be particularly cooler and there may be sections with more of a cross breeze but we didn't know the layout of this huge restaurant well enough to know where to be moved. So we stayed put and sweated.

Portions of certain items were certainly large enough to share such as onion rings and their entree sized salads but IMHO the fried catfish entree itself was really adequate for just one. For the above items, prices were quite reasonable for the size of the portions. I had the side spinach salad (for an extra $4.99) but the size of that side was huge and could have easily have been shared.

If ever back in Gruene in cooler weather I would like to give this place another shot.

“Quaint location and great food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2014

My husband and I stopped at Gruene on the way to San Antonio. We have always heard great things about the Gristmill, so decided to try it ourselves. I loved the tortilla soup! It was very flavorful and delicious! My husband loved the chicken fried steak. We had a great river view and a super waitress! We will be back!

“Beautiful one-of-a-kind restaurant with good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2014

Beautiful restaurant nestled in the trees atop a hill overlooking a river, serves southern comfort food which is OK, pretty good service, a bit pricey though, our family of 4 ate for $105 with no alcoholic beverages. Our server Jeanette was excellent and caring. It's a busy restaurant, it was very crowded and we had to wait 1.5 hours to get seated. But while we waited outdoors, a couple of musicians entertained the guests, they were actually pretty good, I enjoyed the music. Nice, unique restaurant.
