Description: Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years. Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building. Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.

“Recommend this very Texas experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2014 via mobile

Outdoor style eating - cute staff of young people - generous portions - very good sides - nice entrees. The biggest surprise for me was the cocktails. We had a dirty martini and a mojito - both fantastic. I had a ribeye that I had to send back - the waitress probably chose medium well instead of medium rare - but pushed blame off on kitchen. It was returned just how i wanted it and it was fine. I think the problem was really the size of the steak . A little thin maybe 1/2 inch think instead if the 3/4 I was expecting - but it was fine. The wurst plate was interesting - the sausage almost sweet. Onion rings were great - but huge. All the sides were outstanding. Trout entree was a little overdone but fine. The staff are kids so you need to allow for that - they are trying hard but not terribly professional. The mojito was like nothing I have ever had before - grapefruit sections and some grape fruit juice - not much - really complimented the traditional mojito mint and lime tastes. Very gorgeous and highly recommended cocktail. Nice restaurant - don't be in a hurry or too formal. They took care of every issue that arose and we had a fine time. Would be happy to return next time we are in Gruene.

“Love This Place!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2014

We love the Gristmill! The services was great and the food was delicious. I had the pulled pork sandwich with some incredible onion rings. They do NOT serve sweet tea which was a bummer.

“Best view and Onion Rings EVER!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2014

This place is magical no mater at what time of the year you visit them. Outside seating by the river makes it even more special. In one of my visits deers even were passing by the trees by the river.

And FOOD... WOW! Amazing Onion Rings (if you are ordering only for yourself only order the regular size because Texas size is an exaggeration haha). Great hamburgers and steak, the cheese jalapeños app and the artichoke and spinach dip is a must. Overall great menu and super affordable for the experience that you get :)

“Gristmill of Gruene.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2014 via mobile

Heard about this place from a friend. There is a bit of wait during summer days but that's ok you can get open air live music and beer and snacks while you are waiting for your table. The tables outside on the deck is pretty nice. Not a lot of choice but the food was awesome. Pepper steak was really good.

“Friendly service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2014

Started with ckn quesdillas that were amazing...son ordered fried shrimp and they were big and delicious. My husband and i ordered steaks with sides..they were good. My oldest son ordered the chopped steak and wasnt impressed. Our waters were constantly refilled as requested when we sat down after a long day in the heat. This place had tons of people working and they all worked together to serve and clear tables...and this spot in huge. We sat on the deck and we wish we would hv sat inside due to the flies...but overall food was awesome. The little stores nearby are so cute...but close early.
