The Happy Cow is actually in Hunter, Texas, an old stagecoach stop, I think, midway between New Braunfels and San Marcos on Hunter Road. It's not an ice cream parlor as you might think but a bar/restaurant. We learned of it thru members of a local band that play here periodically and when they told me they had Belt Sander Races - I thought only in Texas - and had to see it. So we went one Saturday afternoon recently and could barely find a place to park as it was the place to be. The Belt sander races are literally that - belt sanders that have been decorated and somehow attached via cable and raced along a wooden racetrack about 4 feet off of the ground. The races take place under large, heavily canopied oak trees so it's in the shade and a perfect spot to drink a cold one. The husband was especially intrigued with the belt sander races. From outside, you can hear the local band playing inside where beer, wine and food is also served. Even children were enjoying the tunes of Lonnie and the Texas Connection as they played a variety of songs for folks to "two step" to. Menu choices were hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken tenders, onion rings, french fries, from what I can remember. We had onion rings for a snack and they were good though we had to wait an unusually long amount of time to get them. The Belt sander races are held periodically so if that's what you are interested in seeing, then call first before you go. But go too for the country flavor and ambiance of the Hill Country and have a cold one for me!
