“Good beds, but nasty decor and everything else”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2007

We stayed one night en route to New Mexico. Terrible, nasty, tacky decor. I have no idea what look they were/are going for...there's a little '70's, some 80's--no sign of 90's and beyond except for a great bed. Thank goodness for that. I'll avoid it next time. Midland is apparently NOT a place where you can just show up and find a great room. Virtually every other decent hotel in town was full on this weekday (called in the morning for that night-dumb us) so plan in advance.

Oh--btw, no such thing as complimentary breakfast here. Don't plan on picking up some cereal, a bagel, etcetera. Guess it's weird that a lil' old La Quinta will comp you some breakfast and the mighty HIlton will not.

Also, I wasn't keen to patronize a HILTON --) but we were in a bind.

If you're coming to Midland, the odds are about 10 to 1 it's for business... or maybe a wedding. If so, the Midland Hilton is one of the best choices in town. This is especially true if your business meeting is downtown or the wedding reception you'll be attending is at the Petroleum Club.

Note the phrase Petroleum Club. Midland is an oil town. As such, the Hilton here is not the same as one you'd find in San Diego or Boston. However, for the town, it's one of the best hotels.

The rooms are consistenly clean. They aren't that large and the decor, while somewhat new, is still dated. The bathrooms are very small, but they have what you need and are always clean.

Some of the rooms, as other travelers have noted, are better than others. If you get the South Tower, it's not as nice as the North Tower. Also, if you're a real light sleeper, beware of the train. If you're in the South Tower, you'll hear it.

The hotel typically puts a bottle or two of water in the room for free. For those who have not been to Midland before, they might be surprised to see that the water if free. A taste of the tap water will explain why it's free. The tap water in the Permian Basin is quite bad. If you're drinking what they call RO (reverse osmosis) water, you'll want to go with bottled water. And this is not just me being picky - you'll notice drive in bottled water places in every part of town.

Speaking of all over town... there are a number of new hotels being constructed in Midland. It will be interesting to see how those compare to the Hilton. Until then, however, it's probably one of the safest bets in town.

  • Liked — Location. It's the only downtown hotel.
  • Disliked — The small bathrooms.

I come to Midland once a month with my job and usually stay at a different hotel. This was my first and last time to stay at the Hilton. I agree with previous reviewers that the train whistles are annoying and last all night long. The room was dirty with alot of mold/mildew in the bathroom. Even the hallways were dirty. The food is mediocre at best and the breakfast buffet was terrible. Eggs were cold and rubbery. Biscuits were barely edible and the gravy was something no self-respecting Southerner would serve. Very dissappointing stay and not recommended.

Stayed here for a few nights in December '06. It's certainly considered the nicest hotel in town and it has solid facilities -- clean, comfortable rooms, nice lobby, hotel bar, etc.

The biggest downside isn't their fault, but there's ongoing construction all around the hotel. Traffic's so light in Midland it doesn't reall affect your travel, but it does make the area look ugly and brings a lot of noise that could affect your sleep.

  • Liked — It's the best hotel in town... good location, good rooms, good common areas
  • Disliked — It's the best hotel in town... but it's not anything special.

I would not call this place a dump, but it's close. I cannot imagine how it has kept its Hilton branding. Filthy stained sheets [yikes!] our first night; unrepaired items in the bathroom; and an outdated in room a/c louder than anything in the cheapest of motels. It looks like a high rise downtown hotel from the outside, but don't be deceived. And if you do stay there, do everything possible to stay on the north side [not just the north tower, but the north side of the north tower] to stay away from the railroad tracks that seem like they are right outside the room. Stay away!

  • Disliked — Aside from the filty sheets, the noisy, in room a/c

I am with a company that books 5000 seminars a year and we had actually been to this hotel 33 times. Absolutely loved it up until 1/25/07. The hotel was hosting our meeting as they usually do, but this time they mixed our paperwork up between our 1/25 meeting and 3/16 meeting and set our room entirely wrong. Our speaker who is a VERY PROFESSIONAL guy went to his room and started moving the room to make it correct and he had help from the banquet staff and they got the room rearranged and all seemed fine. The sales person called our company spoke with a co worker of mine and she was told that b/c we sent the wrong paperwork the room was incorrect the speaker was rude and they are not hosting anymore of our meetings. We talked to them and saved our meeting (we thought we did). The next day the sales person faxes us (not called) faxed us our signed legal paper work with a huge cancelled stamped across the front. One of the papers was the 3/16 paperwork that they used to set up our 1/25 meeting incorrectly. I spoke with the GM he aggreed to do the meetings that we had the legal binding contracts for, but nothing after that. It is funny that out of the 33 meetings we have had, he really didn't care about our business. If the paperwork was done correctly this would not have happened. Guess the customer doesn't matter this time!

I was put in a room by the train noise in the south tower, I asked to be moved, and was meet by night staff being very rude, had to talk to the manager and, then eventually the manager over the hotel, then moved me to a room across the hall that shared the wall with the elevator shaft, all night I heard DING... The manager quoted " You are not the only diamond member that stays here" I had resevations for a month in advanced for the executive level, and he quoted "we can't gurantee a room" ROOM SERVICE terriable ,spent $20 veggies not cooked all the way, potatoes were bland when asked if I coudl have rice instead they said it would be an extra charge. When asked to cheak me out and put the bill under the door at night, It did not happen. DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!!
