“mediterranean palace?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2013

We stayed at this hotel 4th - 9th march 2013. I would really like to know what determines the star rating of a hotel as this is not five star. We had a great holiday and I would stay there again so I will list the positives first.
The position of the hotel is fantastic, right in the centre of the up market part of Las Americas and a nice ten minute walk into Los Christianos. We had a room above the entrance which was great for people watching and we were not disturbed by the noise from the road.
The swimming pool is huge, with plenty of sunbeds available. Its very attractive, clean and tidy. Towels are available for a 15euro deposit.
All the staff were courteous and helpful. We went in the gym and participated in the aqua aerobics which was made enjoyable by the enthusiastic entertainment team. Also, free diving lessons were available, but I didn't see anybody having a go. So plenty on offer to keep you entertained, not in your face and always polite.
The food in the restaurant is of a very high quality and plenty of choice. Everything I had at breakfast and evening meal was delicious, I dread to think of how much weight I have put on.
The public areas of the hotel are spotless, very airy and impressive. The drinks are a bit expensive and I can't comment on the hotel entertainment as we like to go out in the evening and walk our meal off! The safe in the room is free.
The negatives.
The bedroom furniture is awful. The hotel is celebrating being open for 25years this month and they must still be using the original furniture. An old box 20inch Grundig telly stuck on top of the ugliest tall boy set of draws I have ever seen, with an opening in the bottom for a fridge you have to pay for, I woke up in the night and thought it was someone looming over me! very dated black furniture. Stippled plaster walls. The bathroom is just average Its such a shame, as it really spoils the hotel and how on earth can this be five star accommodation. When I have stayed in far nicer four star accommodation (Dream palace noelia sur, round the corner, for instance).
Our balcony light did not work, I went to reception on the Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday to ask for it to be fixed, eventually the bulb was replaced on the Wednesday.
The toilets at the swimming pool area stunk to high heaven, even first thing in the morning. The ladies is situated after the gents, the smell of urine was terrible. We stayed poolside all week and I only once saw a member of staff replacing tissues and emptying the bin, I never saw anyone actually cleaning them.
I was not offered nor did I see a hotel questionnaire.

“3*....not 5*!!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2013

Stayed here end of February 2013, for 1 week. The hotel is definitely not 5*!! Don't let me put you off by saying that though....it is a decent 3* hotel & is perfect for a week in the sun. The staff are friendly & helpful; although it always seems to take at least 10-15 minutes to be seen at reception as they are always seem so busy there! Our room was very dated & basic, but there was a fridge, a safe, a tv, plenty of wardrobe space (with hangers), comfy beds & a decent shower. Towels were changed whenever you requested them to be so, bed linen was fresh every 3 days or so.

The rooms were only surface cleaned & require a thorough deep clean (hence the difference between 3* & 5*). When we arrived, our bedroom floor was dusty & the fridge was filthy, so we asked for it to be cleaned (the staff were embarrassed about this & tended to it straight away....although there was minimal difference to be honest). If you want a hot drink in your room then take your own travel kettle, tea bags & mug as this was surprisingly not provided.

The breakfast was great & catered for all tastes, with plenty of healthy choices and as much as you want. Can't comment on the lunch or dinner menu as we were B&B. The location is excellent as the back of the hotel, via the pool, is straight onto the beach & accessible walkways all along the coastline in both directions. A nice selection of restaurants and shops can be found literally 2 mins away, accessed via the front of the hotel. For those with mobility problems, virtually everywhere in the vicinity was flat & easily accessible with lifts to the upper malls of the shopping areas.Transfer to & from the airport is straightforward & roughly 30 minutes.

All in all, a decent enough hotel for an averagely priced & cheerful week in the sun...with a great breakfast & plenty of shops, bars & restaurants all within walking distance.

“Central location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2013

Very large hotel and very busy, particularly at meal times, although the food was good with lots of choice.
Rooms are pleasant although a little tired looking.
Staff are friendly and helpful
Joined in the water aerobics at the pool, I was on the beach at the time so that will indicate how loud the music was, so not the most relaxing place to stay. On the whole I think the loud music was the only negative experience for me.

“A Good 3 Star”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2013

THE GOOD --- The Mediterranean Palace Hotel (like The Cleopatra) is in an excellent location – probably one of the best in Tenerife. Part of the Mare Nostrum Resort - i have now stayed in both hotels.
All members of staff are extremely friendly and keen to help – however they are reactive rather than proactive as would staff be in a true 5 star hotel.
We went Bed and Breakfast and cannot fault choice or quality of breakfast – it was excellent.
Booked a pool view room and that’s what we got and we never really had a problem getting a sun lounger (despite the early birds putting towels down)
Entertainment every night – not of the highest standard but it was of a mixed variety and they all certainly tried their best -- there even was a mini market one of the nights selling mixture of goods – why – in a 5 star hotel?

THE BAD -- The Mediterranean Palace Hotel may be 25 years in existence and obtained a 5 Star rating but I suggest the 5 star rating was based on what it was like 25 years ago.
This hotel is very dated and is in need of maintenance (skirting boards hanging of walls in restaurant), a good painting (stairwells and corridors) and a rigorous cleaning starting with the bedrooms -- providing fresh towels and tyding rooms every day is not enough – some of the surfaces and doors in rooms and throughout the hotel were never cleaned during our stay
The extras in the hotel are a bit of a joke – you have to pay to use room fridge, 15 euro deposit for pool towel, vending machines with possibly the highest charges in Europe, chargeable water with evening meal, 1 euro for 30 seconds for checking weight of suit case (other local hotels free) AND if you want to use the table tennis (two extremely worn bats and a ball) you must pay a 5 euro deposit. These ‘extras’ / levies are a joke and The Mediterranean Palace Hotel must realise its 2013 not 1988.

I had serious problems with noise from another room on two subsequent nights – 1st night a party (we didn’t report) to ~04:00 – the second night with a TV at full volume we contacted reception at 02:00 – noise stopped at 02:33 – interesting when I enquired with customer relations the next day they had NO record of me contacting reception. They did contact me later to say that security had been unable to locate the source of the noise. They told me if any more issues to let them know -- a proper 5 star would have been proactive -- showed they cared and contacted me and at very minimum asked at check out.

SUMMARY -- Overall this is a pretty good hotel in a superb location. It’s quite expensive for what you get. I have stayed in numerous 5 star hotels and The Mediterranean Palace Hotel in my opinion does not qualify as a 5 star hotel / resort -- the attenion to detail is missing. Concern re individual issues are not addressed. At best I believe it’s probably a decent 3 star.

Room Tip: I stayed in pool view room -- suggest you need this as a minimum

“Best pool area in las Americas”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

This was our 3rd stay in the Mediterranean palace from Feb 21st until March 2nd. Absolutely love this hotel because of the comfort around the pool, plenty of space and never had a problem getting a sun bed at any time of the day and because of its prime location right on the beach front.
We found all the staff most helpful and friendly and nothing was too much trouble, the lady that cleaned our room everyday went above and beyond what one would expect, even folding my pj's and putting the neatly on my pillow. I do agree with other reviewers that the rooms need updating but the room has everything you could want with lots of English channels such as itv2, channel 4, film 4 and all the news channels. We loved the huge selection at the buffet breakfast and especially that it was served until 10.30am each morning. Looking forward to my next visit.

Room Tip: Pool view rooms are quieter
