Review following a week at the Marola Portosin.
We arrived at the apartments at around 9pm and was greeted by a welcoming receptionist. Check in was quick and painless, however take note that you will have to pay a room deposit on arrival – this is 30€ per person aged above 11 years old. So with 4 of us it was a bit of a grumble. We didn’t want to give over 120E on the first day as we would not be able to change it back to £££ afterward. We compromised on leaving £120 sterling instead – better. We hired the safe for the week at a cost of 15€ and 10€ deposit. We used the reception to hire a car for 2 days and this was 78€ - cheapest we found whilst there.
I had emailed the hotel the week before and requested a high floor in a quiet location and this was delivered. Brilliant
We were on the top floor with a pool view in a one bedroom apartment (401). This was a perfect location for us as the balcony was huge and the views really good. Enough chairs and a table for everyone in the room. Room comprised of a bathroom (small bath and shower, you will get quite equated with the clingy shower curtain). No mould anywhere which is good. Large sink and mirror with free hair dryer on the wall. Loads of towels to use.
Kitchenette with the usual amenities of a 4 ring halogen cooker top, pots and pans, kettle, microwave, toaster and coffee maker. Enough cutlery and crockery for 4 people in our room with proper Mugs for coffee!! Large breakfast bar, the kitchen table did sit 4 easily. Sleeping area for kids (2 of) comprised of a sofa bed with pull out single bed on floor. I never tried them but the kids seemed to walk OK the next day so must of been good.
Bedroom was of a good size with built in wardrobe with enough space for 4 peoples clothes and hangers a plenty. 2 single comfortable beds, a dressing table and mirror. A ceiling fan in bedroom but it did squeak and rock from side to side somewhat, called reception to fix and they came within half hour. Personally a squirt of WD40 would of worked wonders. Because of the squeak reception bought us a Fan free of charge. Wonderful.
Safe was in lounge area and was large enough for the plethora of Kindles, iPads, iPods, Phones, PSP’s etc that came in tow. One thing that was missing was the lack of electric sockets to charge the above for mentioned apparel. Never mind, we coped and argued who’s turn was next to charge what appliance!!
Maid service not on a Wednesday or Saturday. Clean towels everyday and bed sheets 2 times. Maids were lovely though and spoke good English.
All in all the room was perfect for us. Tip: wear flip flops as you feet will get filthy if you walk round bear foot all day in the room. Maybe a good mopping wouldn’t have gone a miss?
Great pool and nice and warm – loads of comfortable sun beds to choose from and they were not plastic – Result!!! Pool bar was nice and food very cheap. However, at 4pm everyday a hooter/siren goes off and the staff shout ‘Happy Hour’... You have seen the adverts for other holiday companies where everyone runs to the pool? Well Happy Hour was somewhat like this but people running to the bar!! Well maybe not that bad.
The clientele of the hotel were mixed but mostly from the UK. On our 2nd night the families from hell checked in and as it was their first day they overdid the ‘Happy Hour’ and got louder and louder and more annoying as the day went on..... I say family but there must of been at least 18 of them!! They went back to the room when the bar closed at 9pm and continued to party on the balcony with loud music and vile language. To be fair the receptionist did come and tell them off a couple of times and that did the trick for the rest of the week (I’m sure they wouldn’t want to lose their deposit of some 550€).
Perfect for us, close yet far away enough from the main areas. Bout 15/20 walk to Veronicas (If you like that kinda thing?) and 10 min to beach. Large Mercado Supermarket about a 5 min walk away selling cheap food and general stuff. Only a 20 min transfer from airport so nice.
It’s graded as a 3* - That’s about right but I’d put it as a good 3*.
Would I stay again? Yes, I think I would.
