“A real treat of a holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2009

What a fantastic hotel, beautiful clean rooms, superb food, the choice would satisfy all tastes and even the early 6pm sitting was fine and you never felt rushed. Evenwhen we arrived late, dinner was there for us which was great. The place was spotless and very few english guests, the pool area was beautiful with grat poolside service and a restaurant for lunch to which was very good value. The chmpagne sangrias are to die for. Definitely a chillout holiday and few children there althoguh my boys were quite happy to chill with us! Superb fersh fruit at breakfast you can eat really healthily here. The restaurant really made a fuss over my sons birthday - it was lovely. The entertainment was quite samey and some acts were better than others but generally good and varied. The only downside was the fact that the hotel clearly stated that you could not reserve sunbeds on their signs and literature however the rules were not enforced and we had to join the hoards that flocekd to the pool at early dawn to 'bag a bed'. The staff seemed oblivious to this which was a shame. there were beds free in the afternoon though when people moved, just a shame you have to get up early on your holidays so that your family can sit together. This was the only gripe however. We would definitely return, and you must take heatproof shoes for the dunes - they are very hot and exhausting in the day, you are better off taking a taxi to the beach to save your energy. Nice walk along front to playa del ingles about half hour. If you do get fed up of the hotel and need to break away for a night, melonares has some fantastic restaurants.

Before we checked in here we spent four days at the Cordial Mogan Playa - tripadvisor's no.2 rated hotel in Gran Canaria. What a difference at the Riu. Cava upon reception, an upgraded hotel room overlooking the beach, complimentary bubbly and fruit in our room.

At the 6PM dinner sitting we asked if we could dine later, and the management made a special effort to accommodate us even though the hotel was full. The food was to a very good standard and the table service was a welcome feature. Above all, the service was excellent in the dining room, the bars and at the pools. The Kristal fusion restaurant is well worth dining in and unlike other hotels there's no extra charge for having a la carte dining.

It's a great place to stay and the management and staff work very hard to look after their guests.

Downsides? Well the small pool was starting to look tatty with missing tiles. And it's a 20 minute trek to the beach. Outside in Playa del Ingles it's not so stylish. The architecture of the Yumbo Centrum reminded me of Coventry's shopping precinct. Timeshare touts line the Playa del Ingles beachside. Maspalomas is the smarter side of the dunes and a taxi from the Riu only costs 5 Euros.

Third time at this Riu- hotel. The perfect place : great location (near the dunes & Yumbo). Very good staff. You feel at home on holiday. The staff and management of this hotel really takes good care of you. Your are truely a guest! The hotel is beautifuly located just at the dunes. You can see the gay men walking by to the dunes and gay nude beach... Not for families with little children. Also a very quiet hotel. A very nice and high class atmosphere.

Each year my Wife and I go back to the RIU Palace Maspalomas in Gran canaria. It was our 5th visit but we are way behind some regular clienst who have registered over 20 visits. We go in June which is a quieter time and the weather is almost guaranteed dry, hot and sunny. We have grown to love this hotel for its welcoming staff, the food aand the people that we meet year on year who also choose to be there at the same time. It might sound boring but we are doing something that we said we would never do and this too repeat visit but this place draws you back, its that good. Each year we think it will change but NO, the same welcoming greeting from the reception staff, how rare is that, the beaming smile of the men in charge, Director Roberto Jimenez and sub Director Clemente Bordon and the same Restaurant staff, few seem to leave, all make you welcome. OK the location will not suit all. Its got the biggest beach you can imagine short of the Sahara Desert but the sea is 20 minutes walk whichever way you choose. You are distant from the bustle of Playa del Ingles but if you dont mind walking, especially after your evening meal the walk can be most welcome. It would be fair to say that this hotel is for older clients although families with young children do go, but there is no kids club or even entertainment staff. You dont get pool activities, they are there for relaxation and exercise. The Gym has limited equipment but for the more energetic a quick walk across the Dunes would give you all the aerobic exercise that you would need. Good food and plenty of variety is evident in most of the RIU hotels we have visited, and we have done a few, and this one is no exception. In fact I think this RIU sets the standard. I will not bore you with the details but if you cannot find something to your liking at both breakfast and evening meal buffets then you will have problems all over the World. I have to admit that I was a little disappointed with the menu in the Kristal Gourmet restaurant and whilst we enjoyed our 2 visits I will certainly look at the proposed menu on my next visit before making a commitment to go. The ambiance and the waiter service were excellent, and it made a change to the Buffet. On the room front everything was again first class. very clean and fresh towels every day even though we did not always request them. The AC worked well in the hot conditions and we were able to keep the room comfortable at all times. It was about 3 degrees C hotter than normal. Outside the pool area was spotless and there was no trouble getting sunbeds, matresses and umbrella. We did cheat a bit and put our towels out early in a favoured spot. Everyone seems to do it, Brits are as bad as the Germans but no one seems to mind, so Hey why not. In the evenings there is usually music on the terrace with bar service. We always enjoy a drink before our evening meal and its great to sit out on a lovely warm evening, listening to some pleasant music. I cannot comment on the entertainment as we took the late meal and having a walk afterwards meant we were too late to take in any shows, although I understand that most of them were of a reasonable standard. I have not posted pictures as there are loads throughout the reviews on this hotel. We had a very enjoyable stay so if you can handle the extra cost now that the pound has lost so much value against the Euro this is well worth a visit. See you next June

In all I have now spend 75 days in the last 21 months in this splendid hotel over 4 stays and you begin to notice things.

The staff and service are still of the highest quality but the offerings are not like they used to be. Broken teapots at breakfast, the cheese trolley service is now a la carte, in the 3 weeks I was there, I rejected the set menu 5 times and other subtle changes to security that meant people on the far side of the hotel had an extra 150 metres to get to their rooms.

I did write to the directors about my observations but got no acknowledgement.

I might return to this hotel but I am considering staying at one of the more exclusive Riu style hotels in Maspalomas on my next visit.

This is a fantastic place to stay. The natural setting was quiet and wonderful; the staff were amazingly helpful and kind, everything else was perfect. The hotel itself is beautiful and magnificiently kept, we enjoyed swimming-pools and jacuzzi in particular. The beach in front of the hotel offers spectacular views.
You have quite a big range of foods to choose from, but what really impresses you is the nice, very pleasant atmosphere you can sense here. We're from Italy and we've really appreciated the Riu Hotel Maspalomas.

this hotel is probably the best in its area, especially for the views. we thought the staff were great, happy to help with anything. The two pool areas were great, never had to worry about getting a sunlounger, there were enough for everybody.
the food was great, we went on a half board basis and at breakfast drinks were included. there were freshly made smoothies, juices and tea and coffee.plenty of choice from cerial to cooked breakfast. at dinner time there are two sittings 6oclock and 8oclock, you will be designated a time on arrival, you cant choose. but again plenty of choose on food from pizza to ala carte dinning if you wish. dinner is very formal men to wear trousers, you would look completly out of place if you dressed down.
the entertainment, well it started at 9.30pm and ended at 10.30 pm after that it was the ressidant band, who can sing around 3 songs and thats it. the entertainment is defanantly for the older generation and not the most exciting. during the day there were no enterainment.
the dunes are great, i would well reccommend you venture over them its good fun. try this before midday though as they do great hotter throughout the day and can burn your feet.
all in all really enjoyed this holiday, but did feel slightly out of place due to our age we are only a young couple of 21 and 23 and the majority of the guests are at least over 50.
