I did some research on Tripadvisor before booking this hotel and whilst there weren’t many reviews they all gave the impression of a well run hotel. Let me confirm that the hotel more than fulfilled my expectations in every respect.
The holiday had been intended as a cheap last minute getaway to the sun. The hotel delivered on the first requirement comfortably, but it got better - we found it to be of a much higher standard than we expected.
The hotel; a U shaped building split into two halves, one half called the Papayas and the other the Flamingo, both sharing common grounds, pools, restaurants and bars. For all intents and purposes they are as one hotel, but strangely they have separate entrances and reception staff. Economies of scale are obviously not high on the RIU agenda.
First impressions: the building is a typical Spanish white painted concrete structure with little architectural flair; grounds are very well kept and overall the buildings, flower beds, lawns and facilities are immaculate both in appearance and cleanliness.
Inside it is again immaculately maintained by well trained staff, all of whom know their job and do it well. I liked the Hotel Manager coming around at meal times to talk to the customers, a rather nice and personal touch. The whole hotel operation was run like clockwork.
Dark mahogany doors and frames give a rather old fashioned and dingy first impression particularly along the long corridors, don’t let this put you off, the hotel will have grown on you by the time you leave.
We arrived in the early hours of the morning having advised the hotel in advance. There is a 24 hour reception but thought it best to check. They had prepared a snack for us which we hadn’t asked for which gave us a flavour of the customer relations that this hotel seems to excel in.
With my very particular eye on cleanliness I couldn’t see anything wrong with the carpets, but they were being cleaned anyway, probably as part for a continuous periodic maintenance programme.
Location: set about ten minutes amble from the beach and generally central to all local amenities including shopping centres. In fact unless you want to go out of town there is no need to hire a car as we did. We were allowed to park the car in the car park free of charge. For the lazy ones buses run from the hotel to the beach or town and back, but it is all so close it really isn’t worth waiting for the bus.
Rooms; we stayed in a room at the back of the hotel overlooking the tennis court and children’s play area. It was quiet at all times and caught the sun in the evenings, so the balcony was very welcome, which had a small round table with two chairs + a clothes airer.
Our room was a double in that two single beds were pushed together, each made up separately, so in effect a twin bedded room. Usual features such as TV with satellite channels, a fridge, plenty of cupboard space and a safe.
Bathroom; simple and fully tiled and had a bidet too. As mentioned by other reviewers the bath was in a strange position placed head-on into an alcove with the taps almost out of reach. All in good condition, no sign of any mould and the towels and shower curtain were replaced each day.
Cleanliness; we are big on this issue and find this makes or breaks a holiday. On this occasion we found the hotel to be generally immaculate, I cannot fault the cleaning staff in any way and believe me when I say I don’t shy away from putting adverse comments in my reviews (see my others). In fact I couldn’t fault any staff.
Restaurant and food; I don’t know where the reviewer was staying when they said the food was repetitive; I found it to be varied each day.
Breakfast was a hot, cold and continental buffet and had everything anyone could ever want including sparkling wine if you wished, the selection seemed endless. Fresh fruit smoothies prepared on alternate days.
The evening meal was again a buffet with a carvery serving a different meat each night, there were other hot and cold dishes and deserts to die for. Not Michelin star gourmet food but honest well prepared wholesome food to cater for most tastes and diets. And there’s the rub, the food is so very good that you can’t help but put on weight! Wine is available from a wine list and if you can’t manage a whole bottle in one sitting they will store it in the chiller for you for the next night, no it didn’t oxidize. Furthermore the wine list isn’t at all expensive.
The waiting staff are all experienced and appear to enjoy their work which leads to a jovial atmosphere.
Pool area; a medium sized heated swimming pool with a children’s section all surrounded by large paved areas with sun loungers arranged in pairs in neat rows, each pair having a dedicated table and parasol. Soft cushions available for the sun loungers and towels could be obtained from reception. Again the pool area was immaculately maintained and served by waiters constantly in attendance.
There is also a bar by the pool serving drinks, food and ice creams.
Grounds; elsewhere there is a tennis court and a children’s play area hidden at the back of the building and could easily be missed.
Just outside of the reception area and going towards the gardens there is soft seating with low level tables, used mostly by smokers who are not allowed to smoke anywhere inside the hotel. For cooler evenings there are patio heaters available.
There are some retail outlets in the grounds for clothes and electronic goods as well as a small supermarket. A larger chain supermarket is just next door to the hotel.
Inside; there is a lounge bar area with live entertainment and a dedicated TUI area where you can use computers and arrange trips and entertainment etc.
Customer relations; all good, we left late in the evening and spent the day by the pool. Having given up our room at midday as required we able to use a room to shower and freshen up in during the evening before we left.
Conclusion; no wow factor, it doesn’t have a fancy reception area or anything flash. What it does do it does very well indeed, it is the perfect cheap hotel accommodation we were looking for and delivers quality and customer care in spades. We were so impressed we have booked to go back later in the year, we are well travelled but that’s a first for us, so it should speak volumes.
