“Well managed Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013

Together with few of my Fellows, we went for some Party Weekend to Gran Canari and booked us for a couple of Days this Hotel. We had two Double rooms and both Rooms had been good and with a usual Average Standard.
There was Breakfast and Dinner included and we liked it.
Many good Choices of Entertainment nearby and also much Restaurants.

We did spend one Week at Gran Canaria - during June 2012 - and did choosed this Hotel, because we have been there already two Years ago. It is a good Gotel with the typical RIU Standard. Especially we have to say, that the Food was really good and tasty (large Breakfast Buffet and large Dinner Buffet). Swimmingpoolarea was clean few times a Day and that was very nice.

I moved here in time for new year after a 'Holidays from Hell' accommodation experience elsewhere in Playa Del ingles.

I'm am indebted to the staff for working so hard to get my friend and I into the hotel a day earlier than our booking, because our previous apartment was literally making us Ill (it was that filthy). All the staff were friendly, welcoming and always polite. There were some stand out individuals...namely Jose -our dinner waiter who was polite and an absolute scream.... The other was bar waiter -Daniel, the politest most efficient waiter I've ever been served by.

The manager was always on hand and made himself known every day.

We were in the resort for new year and have to say the gala dinner on New Year's Eve was spectacular with complimentary drinks and an incredible buffet.

The food was always of a high standard, the salad and fruit selection beautiful to look at and tasty. Like all hotel buffets, after 12 nights they tend to look samey. In this case the desserts generally were disappointing...For Brits used to stodgy puddings - there's only so many mousse and gelatine based desserts you can take.

The rooms were clean, beds comfy- well maintained but very dated. For those used to boutique hotels or newer complexes they will be disappointed by the room decor but everything worked and was of a high standard.

The balcony could have done with a light for evening use.

WiFi in all rooms is a must for four star hotel these days and for those with mobile devices I'm afraid you'll have to spend time in the foyer for Internet access.

The bar was very good but entertainment generally quite bland. They were professional but there was nothing to set the world on fire. When they did stage a decent act (Lord of the Dance) the poorly laid out stage and dance floor meant very few could see clearly, consequently what could have been a very good show was ruined by lack of atmosphere.

The pool is very good with a bar/restaurant. The restaurant menu is very limited but food of a high standard.
Daytime temps in January hover around 70f. Unfortunately the trees, which are probably very welcome in the Summer, make the pool area very shady which in the GC wind in January makes for a chilly experience. The hotel also needs to enforce its 'no reserving sunbeds before 10am' rule. Every day the prime location sun beds were taken by selfish people who often did not appear for hours.

After reading some of the reviews I had high expectations of this hotel, however my experience couldn't be more different.

RIU Papayas is another 4 star establishment in Gran Canaria that provides 2 star comfort in the bedroom. Its former 4 star glory expressed in 70's/80's style is still evident but only in communal areas.

Riu Papayas is located in a large complex and the only way to get there is thru the Riu Flamingo, a rather confusing set up.

As I mentioned already bedroom definitely fails to live up to what is considered reasonable 4 star comfort. In what can be only described as 'granny chic' shabby furniture, flowery curtains (that don't match anything in the room) and textured rough white walls complete the look. And it doesn't get any better in the bathroom, very basic and old fashioned look is complimented by cheap looking toiletries and brown towels that were both thin and rough as sand paper. The only positive was good shower.

Balcony was on a small side and some of other residents found the view of it more interesting then that of distant ocean. Internet was slow and not free and only available in lobby

Riu complex is favoured mainly by German tourists who constituted majority of the guest. Their presence was particularly felt at meal times. Breakfast was one big stampede where rules and regulations were abandoned completely not only by guests but also by management. Like the locusts plague in large numbers they came and cleared most of food from the buffet leaving behind piles of dirty plates and cups. And it didn't get any better during the dinner. Although unlike breakfast which was pure wild west it was controlled by rules and regulations which meant that throughout your stay you were assigned the table and time but that did nothing to stop locusts behavior. Instead of pleasant and civilised experience meal times were more like Darwin's evolution theory survival of the fittest. Even nice garden and pool area was spoiled by rules and regulations that stated where you could have your snack from poolside bar.

We just returned from 4 days/3 nights at the Riu Papayas as part of a LuxAir Tour.

The hotel has 4 stars, but it is a little dated looking. That said, it was immaculately clean. The lobby and gardens were inviting. The pool area was very nice.

In our room we had plenty of toilet paper (I am always amazed when more expensive places don't leave a spare roll--here we had two spares) and plenty of towels. We were 3 in the room, so when we found 2 spare pillows and requested a third, the housekeeping staff brought it right away and the desk called the next day to ensure I had received it.

The beds were only slightly more comfortable than the average Spanish bed (which I always say are holdovers from the Inquisition).

The restaurant is buffet style with assigned tables and times. The wait staff was charming, cheerful, and professional. They greeted everyone as they opened the dining room doors, and said goodbye as you left. I don't know how many languages they spoke, but I heard German, French, and English (I used Spanish as much as possible in order to practice, which delighted them--everyone was very patient with my bumbling around and gently corrected my errors, which I appreciated).

The staff at the pool snackbar was also very good.

The buffet was ample--lots of choices. You have no excuse for not finding something you want at breakfast or dinner. It was not gourmet--but just basic and consistent. The kids loved it.

No WiFi at the hotel, although there is internet available in the lobby area. This was fine--we kind of enjoyed the break.

Every room has a balcony. If you have a choice, the garden side is probably quieter (we were facing a rather busy street).

The room literature said not to claim chairs by the pool with towels--but people clearly did run out early and stake a claim. Yes, there were plenty of chairs, but some locations got more sun, and since it was chilly, these were popular.

I was there with my teenagers, and we were exceptions -- there were some families, but most of the other guests were retirees. The topless German grandmas horrified my youngest ("EEEEW!"), but the demographic meant the hotel was quiet.

You can walk to the beach (it is maybe 1.5 km? I did it twice.). But it isn't the best beach I've ever encountered. I think the better stuff is inland/up in the hills.

If I return to Gran Canaria, I'll probably stay somewhere other than the Playa del Ingles area--but this is not because of my experience at this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for the garden side to avoid typical Spanish street noise.
