“All you need to know about Don Miguel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2013

Riu Don Miguel is a very, very nice hotel, and its location is very good, whether you want to go to the beach, San Fernando, Maspalomas and Yumbo centre.

To go to the beach, you take the bus parked diagonally opposite the hotel entrance. You can walk 15 -minutes, slowly, down Afereces Provicionales. Pick up a coffee and fresh cakes at the Zipf Backerei on the way down on your right. In the evening you take your coffee on Ciao Ciao on the beach, with live music. You can also have a dinner at Gorro Blanco, it is a good place.

You can also reach the beach by going diagonally through Yumbo Centre, stopping for juice at the Italian cafe or Cafe de Paris. Go out to your right, take a left on the corner and continue, passing the tall hotell Bohemia on your left. Then you will get to the promenade, and the steps to the beach. A taxi to the beach is 2,20 Euro.

To go to Maspalomas, you go down to the next roundabout, and the bus stop is on your left. Eat fresh fish in a restaurant there.

Rooms: We asked for a quiet room facing the pool in 4th floor. But our room, 403, was not quiet, the door faced the gigantic roundabout. Not recommend for light sleepers, particularly at 7 am when the morning traffic is hectic. It was also very very cold in the room, and it seems A/C is not working, it didnt produce any heat. There is a fridge in the room, but you need your own boiler.

The receptionsts are polite and helpful, and after some days we were changed to 240, with pool view, no wind, sun from 1 -5 pm, and quiet location on the backside. Very, very nice, only you will hear the sounds from the plumbing, it is really loud. The best rooms are from 43-49 in all floors, particularly 3rd and 4th. It is not easy to get a room with sun and quiet. Be very particular about what you desire.

The rooms are very nice, and a great selection of TV channels, and CANAL + movies in original language, OMG, so great! The beds are comfortable, and the pillows. Only they have these blue blankets that I needed 3 extra from to not get cold at night. We ordered a king size bed, but got to single ones.

The food is superb, and lots of nice vegetables, and the service in the dining hall is perfect. The staff is very friendly and hospitable. My husband and I got a table all to ourselves, that is recommendable. Even after 5 days I did not feel the food became boring, and that goes for both breakfast and dinner. Remember to tip these people, they work so hard and deserve it. The same goes for the cleaning ladies, the cleaning is immaculate.
Pool: Little bit cold until afternoon, but always enough sunchairs. 21 degrees in water. Cold yacuzzi, and could not find table tennis there.
Other guests were very nice and friendly, Germans, English, French, Gay couples, it was ok and a variety, but mainly adults over 35. Very special hotel shop with only mens wear. Strange.
Internet: free in reception, otherwise 6 euro per day, or 20 per week. We paid 15 000 NOK for the trip, 6000 was for the flight.

Room Tip: Rooms from 40-49 in third and fourth floor are the best rooms, in my opinion.Quiet, with sun.

Absolutely stunning hotel up to date design very girly colours throughout pink and purple .all staff are amazing and nothing is too much bother, very very clean hotel, fantastic pool area clean and tidy with plenty of double beds and sun loungers available, staff do take anybodys towel off the sun beds if anyone deems to try and save one which was great to watch them actually do it, food was very plentiful but very boring; and repetative, great location for shopping and sight seeing, bus stop outside the hotel for trips to the beach, we went on the dolphin search booked through thompson at £25 each, we got picked up by coach and was on the boat for over 3 hours with captain joe and his crew; u can smoke on the bottom deck if u like and u also get a free drink each, excellent captain and rep they told us about everything we saw, which was lots of different kinds of dolpins and lots of baby dolphins too , they were playing and showing off their beauty and skills, amazing to see them in their natural enviroment, there was also flying fish and a huge smelly whale 5*** trip highly recommended, all in all i would stay here again, the best by far that i have been in, more like a 4* than a 3*

On arrival we were allocated a room over looking a busy main road, the balcony was also blocked with trees and the lock didn't work. Not an auspicious start to our stay!
However the reception staff changed the room for us straight away on request with a minimum of fuss.
This leads me to this hotels greatest strength..... Its staff. Every single member of staff had been simply excellent, a breath of fresh air, from the room mates to the waiters nothing has been too much trouble. A special mention to Ventura in the restaurant.
The rooms are clean, and have been recently modernised, the bathrooms were still rather dated but the shower is simply brilliant, powerful and hot !
The food is slightly above average for this type of hotel, but very very repetitive. A week of it is quite a core. But it is acceptable.
The location is great. If you're coming here you know what you're getting across the road in the Yumbo it does what it sets out to do. The hotel find a bus to the beach but we didn't bother. The pool area though pleasant is a lot smaller than the photos portray so slightly disappointed there, but it was clean and we'll looked after and we always found beds.
To finish off I would once again say this is a great hotel, worth the money with excellent staff. I'd stay again.

We have just returned from a weeks holiday, staying at the Don Miguel. This hotel was actually more than we were expecting from a 3 star! Its spotlessley clean throughout and the staff were great. The food is really good quality and there's so much of it!! You are allocated the same table for dinner every evening and we got along with the people next us brilliantly, all the other guests were friendly and polite too!! The drinks are all reasonably priced in the hotel bar and the outside bar area is stunning in the evening, with really effective lighting. The pool area is also clean and there's plenty of room to relax. The hotel is well situated for everything including the beach which only a 10min stroll away!

We spent christmas at this hotel over a seven day period. The hotel itself was as near perfect as you would get.

All the staff in all areas were brilliant especially in the restaurant where you were never left with a dirty plate in front of you, most efficient. There have been comments about the seating being too close,we did not find this a problem. The two sittings for dinner seemed to work very well.We both liked the lovely greetings we got from the staff on entering the dining room.

The pool area was always spotless like the rest of the hotel with plenty of sun beds for everyone.Pool staff were very attentive for all your needs.

I am sorry that i have to finish my review with a negative.Whilst the food was good, it never seemed to be hot, just warm. This may have been because we were second sitting i do not know.Perhaps they could look into this..

Having read several reviews of the hotel before booking & just prior to travelling, I'd agree with much that had been said. The recently refurbished hotel was clean, tidy, food good, staff very friendly & helpful, rooms a good size, and convenient for many local shops as well as the Yumbo Centre. We were there over Xmas & New Year so expected the hotel to be busy & were pleased with the Gala Dinners provided for us on each occasion. We were happy for the evening meal to be in 2 sittings & happy to chat to people nearby.
However we were surprised at the amount of gay men at the hotel, which seems to cater mainly for them - the only hotel shop stocks only male clothing & the 'Fashion Shows' are just menswear. I had no problem with the gays (maybe obviously), most were friendly & tend to go back there each year. We have stayed in Playa des Ingles on 2 previous occasions & had only come across the gays on the sand dunes, never been aware of them in other hotels. I should like to have been forewarned about this & the fact that the evening entertainment was outdoors - great most of the year but chilly in Dec/January.

Room Tip: High room overlooking the pool, gets evening sun.

Just went for 7 days and chose the Don Miguel for its mention of vegetarian food. Really pleased with the choice. As others have said, you are allocated to a table for your stay but the other guests are really lovely - you just have to say hello to break the ice - everyone is there to enjoy themselves. There is a massive and ever-changing variety of food to choose from and although veggies do have to be careful (is that meat or a brown piece of cheese/egg?) we did eat very well. Meat and fish-eaters had an absolute ball but all the food was fresh and very tasty indeed. The hotel rooms are clean and very pleasant although, as others have said, going to bed early is a bit of a no-no because of the music playing across the road. Really nice pool and jacuzzi pool (sticky-up bit with a push button to start) and a good fitness centre. I loved this hotel and would definitely go back: the shining light of the Don Miguel is the staff and they are just lovely. We were so lucky with the weather - sun-bathing every day round the pool and no problems getting a sunbed, moving around like sunflowers to catch every last ray (although you do need to keep out of the wind). Like others, we were on the 3rd floor but it takes 2 minutes to get anywhere in the hotel and we could choose where we wanted to sit round the pool from our third-floor vantage point. Night time: you need long sleeves and a jacket outside but the hotel has good live entertainment on and the Yumbo centre is across the road - fabulous for people watching. Playa del Ingles is very touristy - wonderful for just relaxing - and lots of male, gay tourists, which made it feel very comfortable indeed for women. What would I change? Next time, I'll remember to take beach towels; I won't walk to the beach and certainly won't walk back from the beach (uphill and about 2 miles!); I now know where the nudist beach is and won't walk onto it by mistake (although I enjoyed the view immensely, not sure husband did). Would also go sooner to the Friction bar in the Yumbo where the two male waiters are really friendly and serve you wearing g-strings - we found them the day before returning to the UK. I had a whale of a time and will go for a longer stay next year. Word of warning, we were there from 28 November and people we spoke to said it had rained every day for the 10 days before that so probably December rather than November if you want to take advantage of the excellent weather. Do visit the tourist centre in the Yumbo - some beautiful items on sale and again, really lovely people.

Room Tip: Possibly higher rooms or at the end of the building would be quieter. We were in 353 and the positi...
