“Excellent staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2012

We (60 year old couple) had a week's stay all inclusive at the Riu Waikiki in December 2012. The hotel is a bit dated but clean and the staff were outstanding. Our room was fine for a 3* hotel cleaned every day to a good standard but unfortunately did not get much sun (the hotel blocks are circular in shape and it was December!). Food was plentiful at all meals which were buffet style. Breakfast and lunch are a free for all for seating and dinner places were allocated for the whole week. The dining room was always crowded even with two sittings for dinner but the food itself was plentiful and varied with all tastes catered for. Salads in particular were fresh and tasty but the vegetables were a bit tired. If three meals a day aren't enough there are always snacks available.
Most guests were German or Nordic which was fine for us but they do do things differently from the Brits!
Would I go back? Probably no but I'm not a particular fan of the all inclusive atmosphere and it is no reflection on the hotel staff who were excellent throughout.

We went to the RIU Waikiki at the end of November for a getaway and we did enjoy our stay. It is one of the older hotels in the resort but it's not hugely noticeable.

Location is good. Your about a 3 min walk from the Kabash and a 10 min walk from the Yumbo. I managed to stagger back from the Yumbo at 5am with no problems. Beach is about a 10-15 min walk away but there is a shuttle bus to take you there if you can't be asked with the walk!

We stayed in Block C of the hotel which had a view looking over the back of the hotel (and the mountains) but to be honest I really think it doesn't matter where about you stay in the hotel as it is all very similar. If you want to avoid noise then go for blocks D & E. The room itself is quite basic but all the amenities you need i.e. a bed, bathroom, TV and balcony are there. No AC but there is a fan in the room.

Food was average. Wasn't expecting much anyway, it was plentiful. I have to agree it is repetitive but we managed throughout the week. Soft drinks, beer and wine is on tap until midnight. If you want spirits and 'cocktails' you just ask the bar staff and they'll be more than happy to get it for you.

We didn't experience a huge amount of the entertainment and facilities as we were out and about most of the day. The swimming pool is good and I did watch some of the aqua aerobics which looked fun but I was being lazy so didn't join in. We watched a couple of the shows which were a good laugh as well.

Overall I had a great holiday. Hotel is a 3* and you get what it says on the tin. Few complaints and would go back there again.

Room Tip: Blocks D & E receive less noise.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2012

My partner and I spent 2 weeks at the Riu Waikiki in October 2012 and overall enjoyed our time at the hotel.

We were allocated room 760 in block E which provided us with a great view over the hotel and beyond to Gran Canaria and the sea. The room itself was basic but very clean and towels were changed every day which was good. As other people have mentioned there is no fridge and no proper air conditioning apart from a ceiling fan but we left the balcony doors open at night and were not disturbed by the traffic noise.

The food in the hotel was a little repetitive but was of a good quality and there was always plenty to eat. We did find breakfast a little chaotic and noisy as breakfast is only available for 2 hours from 8 until 10 so there are a lot of people in the restaurant at the same time.
We only had lunch in the main restaurant once in the 2 weeks but it was very similar to the evening meal. The rest of the time we were either at the beach or had lunch by the pool bar-the lunch here never varied each day.

Dinner is served in 2 sittings and we opted for the second sitting as 6.30 is far too early for dinner. You are allocated the same table for the whole of your stay but we were very lucky to be sat with 2 lovely couples over the course of the 2 weeks so didn’t mind this at all.

You could help yourself to soft drinks, wine and beer which was great as it avoided having to queue at the bar. The bar staff were very friendly and good natured and worked hard at all times. The wine and beer were both fine as were the spirits but the cocktails were dreadful as they were all premade so we avoided them.

There was a real mix of nationalities in the hotel which was nice and a surprising amount of Spanish holiday makers as well.

We did not watch any of the shows in the evening or participate in the day time activities as they are not our thing.

The main negative about this hotel is the pool area which is far too small for the number of guests. I have never seen so many sun beds in such a small area-you are more or less on top of the person sitting next to you. Many of the beds are reserved well before breakfast starts so you need to be down early to get a decent spot. We also found that the sun did not hit the main area of the pool until lunchtime and then had gone again by 5pm so if you want a full day in the sun it’s not going to happen by the pool. Consequently we did go to the beach several times so that we could get a full days sun and to try and avoid the crowds.

The beach was however fantastic-very very clean and tidy and the water was much warmer than the pool. It was also only a short stroll from the hotel.

The only other negative was the shower room which you can use when you leave-checkout is 11am and as our flight wasn’t until late evening we spent the day by the pool and wanted to shower before we went out for dinner. You are not able to book a slot to use the shower room and have to advise reception when you are ready and then wait in the queue. Once your slot becomes available you are only allocated 10 minutes to use the facilities which we found dirty and littered with rubbish and old towels. You are also not able to use the restaurant on your last day for your evening meal so have to go out for dinner instead.

Overall for the money we paid we were very happy with the hotel and had a very enjoyable holiday. We would certainly go back again in the future.

Room Tip: Room 760 Block E had a great sea view

Didn't know what to expect at the waikiki but we were pleasantly surprised. Room was very clean & was cleaned every day. All the staff were very friendly, & worked hard. We went all-
inclusive for two weeks and were very satisfied with the quality & quantity of the food. The whole hotel was cleaned constantly. The money we paid for the Waikiki was great value.

My only complaint is that people arrived, left or got up early for trips etc, it was very noise at night with the tile floors. First time visiting Gran Canaria won't be the last.

Booked with First Choice 17th -24th November. No entertainment on flight, on arrival had to walk right across coach park and up two escalators with luggage to catch coach,if you are elderly or have health issues tell the reps as we then went back for some elderly holidaymakers. Then had 6 drop offs hence hour journey. Was not impressed with the long queues on both check ins either and if you are over your luggage allowance on return journey you may be charged 12 euro a kilo so be careful although we were a couple of kilos over and were not charged. There is a weighing machine at reception costs 1 euro.

First impressions at hotel was the friendliness of the staff, we felt very welcome.

Food at the hotel was great, lots of variety and plentiful. Dinner is in two sittings 6pm and 8pm.
You are allocated a table but it may be with other guests, however if you are not happy the head waiters do there best to please you, we did not mind in the end and actually got talking to a real nice dutch couple.

It is a good mix of nationalities we did not feel a minority and never had a problem getting a sunbed. The pool and sunbeds around pool constantly cleaned as with all other areas.

Room was clean but basic, i took a kettle and hairdryer. We were in 362 in E block where we had no problem with outside noise but we never had the sun on our balcony.

Entertainment team were fantastic and a big part of making our holiday so enjoyable.
My friend and i would go to stretch classes with Colleen which we really enjoyed, and then there was Aqua arobics which was great fun although we found the water in the pool a bit cold but we soon warmed up.

Entertainment in the evening was excellent, much of it was with the entertainment team and they did a brilliant job, colleen was our favourite as she has so much energy but all the team were great.

We hired pushbikes for a day which was 9 euro or 35 euro for a week. You need to take your passport or a 50 euro deposit. The shop is about 10 mins walk to the right of the hotel.

This was excellent value for what we paid with some of the nicest, happy staff i have come across,

Room Tip: 362 E block quiet but no sun

I don't normally book package holidays but we did a last minute next day deal with Thomas Cook and got eleven nights at the RW and we had an excellent time.
Firstly this is not a five star resort; it is a great value hotel with adequate rooms, great staff and great food; we did all-inclusive and consider that we got good bang for our bucks; we were greatly impressed with the organisation, the hard working staff and the food was way beyond what I expected of an AI. Do not go expecting five star luxury but if you go for a nice relaxing time in a decent hotel you will be delighted.
Must comment on the entertainment staff who like the rest of the crew work very hard to keep the smiles going; watch out for Colleen's Flashdance; very impressive.
Well done to the management and staff and thank you!!

Room Tip: Get a room facing the mountains; the sun doesn't go that side so the room stays nice cool; there...

I had never experienced an all-inclusive resort but was booked into this hotel as part of a group. I did not have high expectations before arriving, but I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the hotel. It is a BUDGET all-inclusive. People book it because it's cheap. You can't really complain about the repetitive food or the age of the furnishings when you book a cheap travel package. They work hard to keep the prices low because that's what tourists demand. Does the food lack a bit of inspiration? Yes, of course, but the staff does their best with what they have. The pool is HUGE, but you better get there early if you want to get a sun chair. I noticed many towels reserving chairs when no one was around. The entertainment staff were super friendly and did their best to create an upbeat atmosphere at the resort. The staff in the restaurant were fantastic! They were so friendly to our group at every dinner. I became sick mid-trip, and the staff went out of their way to get me a cup of boiling water for me to make some special tea.

I would recommend this place to anyone looking for an excellent budget location in the Playa del Ingles region.
