5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2012

I have just returned from 8 day stay at Gran Canaria. The hotel Gloria Palace San Agustin I was 19 years ago. How then, and now is a good hotel with nice staff. I can only recommend. Good value for money.

positives; very good value for money, hotel is very pretty and outstandingly clean, they are improving it and making a lovely job. We had a poolside room for a family of four, two bedrooms was a bonus. Pool area great, plenty beds, plenty of activities for children and the children's entertainers are very nice. Reception staff very helpful. Food looks good but sometimes disappointing, although there is lots of choice. Good evening entertainment.
Negatives; the all inclusive is confusing. You have a wrist band but you also need your room card key for every drink you get which is a bit of a faff. Also it is not very clear what is all inclusive and what's not and there are 2 bars that are not all inclusive but offer 50% discount, I think they could make this system a bit more streamlined. Although you do get the hang of it after a couple of days.
San agustin itself could do with an overhaul, not very appealing.
Overall, the hotel is very attractive and relaxing and I would go again, the children loved it.

Room Tip: Poolside good for families although the back of the room faces a wall.

If you are planning to go to this hotel, go ahead without thinking, it is very good, high class food, the camera are not that big, but still OK, the view is excellent, and to get to the sea you have to walk aprox. 10 min.
Just a small tips: DO NOT GO TO ANY TRIPS POSTED IN THE HOTEL LOBBY, especially the dolphin view. Its a total rip-off, you go 10 miles away from the shore and no dolphins(they say today they are not present), but then some 3rd party traders will come to ask you huge prices for jet sky rides and bananan rides. Also another thing to keep in mind, if you have the dinner also paid, they will come very quick to you ask you if you want anything to drink, even though maybe you have "all inclusive" package(2-3 euro per drink); the drinks are not included in the price.

Stayed 3rd to 10th June. Room 909, 4th floor.

Room: Good - clean & comfortable. Two twin beds, sofa bed and coffee table. Spacious double fitted wardrobe, with shelves and safe (2.50 Euro per day). Dressing table with chair, mirror and place to put suitcases. Large sideboard with small Samsung TV on top. TV had only one English speaking channel - Sky News. Kettle and supply of coffee, tea milk & sugar, replenished daily. Small fridge also in cupboard. Patio doors led on to a secluded balcony with panoramic views overlooking the hotel grounds and sea beyond. The bathroom was spacious with double basins, toilet and shower in bath; towels changed when you wanted them to be. Not so good - no getting away from hotel entertainment as the balcony was like the stalls in a theatre. Other guests smoked on their own balconies; the smoke was intrusive. Also, there was no sun at all on my balcony. There are also rooms underneath the sun lounge area overlooking the residential area; they are probaly just as lovely inside but they would not obviously have a panoramic view.

Hotel: Efficient welcome and checking out. Glass of Cava on arrival. Hire of pool towels with a deposit of 10 Euros per towel, could change these for 50 cents per towel. Very large hotel with lots of space and lots of sun loungers. There's no need to put towels on loungers in the morning because there are so many. Pool staff will remove the pads and towels if they are left unattended for a long length of time. Two pools in the main area and one on the roof terrace. Looked nice and clean and served by a poolside bar. I was disappointed with the Chill Out Terrace because I thought it too bland; it didn't appeal to me. However, the views from the roof were amazing. Inside, the reception area is grand and there are many places to sit. The staff were efficient and well trained.

Entertainment: This was quite good in the evening, a good variety and a good resident duo. There was entertainment during the day but I didn't join in.

Food: This was very good. At breakfast there was all the usual, nice bread, plus a hot bar with freshly cooked bacon eggs, sausage, etc. etc. and also soft boiled eggs. Plus a further hot plate serving chesse and ham toasties with bread or croissants. I thought the bacon to be the best I've tasted in a hotel abroad. At dinner the choice was amazing. The buffet salads were excellent and always something different with an imaginative twist. The hot plate served freshly cooked meats or fish, Chinese stir fry, pizza, chips, prawn crackers...I can't remember everything but it was really good and there always was something for everyone. I did not have the same meal on any day that I was there. There was also a selection of cheese and crackers for afters (as well as to die for desserts). During my stay there was a gala night with a shot of a liquor handed out at the dining room entrance. There was also a guest survey, on Tuesday I think, where the survey, along with a glass of Cava, was handed out on entering the dining room. This breakfast was very special (keeping guests sweet?) with smoked salmon etc.

Resort: A disappointment for me I'm afraid and I can now see why the hotel offers all inclusive - I stayed half board. Good: the sea walk to Maspalomas took us about 30 mins. Once there there are a few shops, restaurants and bars. Not so good: Hardly any bars in the immediate area of the hotel. El Capitan is by the beach just behind the Casino but it is expensive 5.50 Euro for two (not so) large beers. The other bars we found in the orange coloured shopping mall. The bar staff were friendly and welcoming but the bars were so run-down (as was the mall). Prices varied from bar to bar, The cheapest was the bar by the Spar supermarket 3.50 Euros for two large beers. We were told though that May/June is not high season for Gran Caneria which may explain why some bars were closed throughout our stay. When I got back I was told that it is usual practice for bars and restuarants to be situated in shopping malls in Gran Caneria? However, there are lots of taxis and buses to get you to nearby resorts where there is more action. If the beach is for you this was very good with an expansive stretch of sand and also rocks for fishing off.

Overall, I enjoyed staying at this hotel, it was good value for money. I would also recommend the hotel to friends but my tip would be to stay all inclusive.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room on a floor level 4 or above.

This hotel was lovely - our room was clean, spacious, with just enough cupboard space and things you needed. Bathroom good - slightly old fashioned but I think this is typical of spanish hotel standards. Clean adequate and nice enough.
All inclusive deal was great with buffet choices at breakfast dinner and tea, all sorts of drinks included but if you wanted eg brand beer like peroni you had to pay but less than the non inclusive guests ie a can of guinness was 2.25 euro for us but 4.55euro for non inclusive. it included ice creams etc so great for kids.
kids pool and large adult pool with plenty of loungers near by. Evening entertainment was variable some very good some ( like the magician) 20 years out of date !
Hotel runs bus service to 2 local beaches daily which really helps.
Highlights were going to Music Hall Tavern ( wed or thurs night) meal and very funny cabaret drag act - not crude, not offensive, plenty of kids there just laughing at the costumes and funny side of it. Well worth the cost. Drinks there were free during the meal so eat slow and drink fast!.
Yellow submarine trip at Peuro do Mogan is good too. Quite a walk from where bus drops you and submarine dock so be warned.
When we went ( 1st week in june) the hotel had only just opened that day so there were hitches and glitches - eg the spa bit was closed almost until our last day and there were works going on each day but nothing too significant. It also wasn't crowded which was great.
The kids club was good with activities all day and mini disco at night which was entertaining for us as adults to watch.
Would really recommend. The professional photos on here are a bit dated. somethings have been updated or changed but on thewhole they are representative of the hotel.

Room Tip: There are rooms in the main hotel building but family rooms ( eg 2 separate rooms -1 twin,1 double...

Before booking this holiday we read, on tripadvisor, almost every review for this hotel and I am so glad we did, because as an earlier review stated the first impression of this hotel was not good. I could almost hear the other people on the coach saying 'you poor things' but like Dr Who's tardis once inside it was so different. The reception hall was bright and cheerful. The receptionist was so welcoming and yes we enjoyed our glass of Cava. Our room wasn't spectacular but it was nicely furnished and we had a good view and it was cleaned daily. People have previously spoken of the hard matresses and although they were a little hard we have slept on worse. Also although we had a good view out to sea the balcony attracted very little sun, but then there were plenty of sunbeds around the pool if you wanted to sit in the sun. What really made the holiday was the friendliness of the staff. Nothing was too much trouble for them, if you wanted something they got it for you. They were always smiling and happy and this seemed to rub off on all the guests. We met so many lovely people of different nationalities and we enjoyed the daily rivalry when competing in the games of archery, shooting etc. This is not for everyone I know but my husband does not enjoy sitting around a pool and so this was just right for him whilst I could sun bathe and read a book. The food was buffet style which I am not too keen on but every night you could have fish and meat freshly cooked to your requirement and the choice was better than we have had in other hotels. There was good entertainment every night, and afterwards we could dance or just listen to the resident pianist and singer. We were All Inclusive, so I enjoyed working my way through the list of cocktails. The Spa was the biggest we had ever been in and we really enjoyed using it. Finally a big thank you to the entertainment staff who worked so hard. This was a relaxing holiday with a lot of fun and laughter.
