The service was excellent. Very peaceful; no loud mouths. The fifth floor room we stayed in over looked the ocean; could hear the comforting sound of the waves before going to sleep and when waking up in the morning. The food was five star with many healthy options. Although the hotel has only one pool it was free most of the time. Took us about an hour and fifteen minutes to walk to the most southern tip of Maspolomas; by bus it is less than 10 mins and costs under 1.50 euros. The buses travel there every 5 to 10 mins and the bus stops are right outside the hotel. The evening entertainment was a little lively with a mixture of spanish and some old school hits. The only downsides in my opinion are the cocktails e.g. Mojito with only a leaf of mint that was not even crushed and the wifi which we had to pay for that was not priced fairly.

Room Tip: Fourth floor and above. Gentlemen remember to bring trousers for dinner as shorts are not aloud.

My friend and I stayed in Dunas Don Gregory in the first week of May. Our room was great with an amazing sea view from our balcony. The hotel was really clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We were all inclusive and the variety of food at breakfast, lunch and dinner was superb. The location was great and allowed my friend to soak up the sun whilst I did some walking and sightseeing. We would definitely go back and would highly recommend the hotel to others. Thank you for a great week.

1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

My girlfriend is pregnant, so we wanted a nice relaxing holiday before she gives birth and the sleepless nights begin. The holiday began well, the rooms are dated, mainly the bathrooms, like stepping back to the 1980's, but the hotel was quiet and the location good for the beach.
We went all inclusive, it's buffet every day, all day. The food was tasty and the restaurant staff friendly, although they did tell me off the first day for trying to get my own drink. I wouldn't say this was a four star, but looking at the other hotels in the area, you can see why they have the rating.
The holiday started to go wrong when we woke on Saturday morning to find that my girlfriend's padlocked suitcase had been broken into. We immediately rang the main desk who promptly arrived at our room with a "handy man" who checked the door so they could generate a report to see who had entered our room. The report was printed and we sat down to check. The night before, we had gone to dinner at 8pm returning to our room at 22:30. In that time, someone with what looked like our key fob had entered our room at 21:00 and stolen both our mobiles and all of our money. Now bare in mind my girlfriend is very visibly pregnant, I am totally disgusted that someone, who I can only assume works at the hotel, and knew we were at dinner, broke into our room and stole everything, knowingly from a pregnant women. We had a "handy man" come in on the Tuesday prior to fix the shower head, make of that what you will. The hotel staff looked and treated us like we were lying, there was no visible investigation, we didn’t even get a visit from the manager or an apology. If I ran a hotel, and someone was stealing from the guests, I would want to investigate.
What hurts the most is that there are photo's on both of our phones documenting my girlfriend's pregnancy, from the start of her pregnancy until that week. These are pictures that are very precious to us. To lose these very intimate pictures, has ruined what should have been a lovely week for the both of us. We have both worked so hard, and to have someone violate our belongings, and to lose our sons time line cuts me to the bone.
I would not recommend this hotel on the basis that someone let themselves into our room and stole our belongings and the poor service and after care once reported. Now you may say, 'why didn't you use the safe'. We moved rooms on the first day as our first room was dirty and very out dated, we had the safe working in that room but couldn't quite work it out in the new room. And the hotel seemed very safe, mainly people over 60 and a very slow pace, so felt safe to leave our belongings in a padlocked suitcase. In hindsight, we should have used the safe…. Or gone to a different hotel.

Dear Don Gregory guest,

We are very sorry that we could not meet your
expectations, but we took very good note of all your
comments in order to improve our services. The feedback
of our customers is very important for us, as it helps us
improving our hotel and our service day by day.

We greatly regret that your holidays have not been entirely
pleasant. Concerning the incident with your room we have
proceeded in a manner as it is the normal process for such
cases. As you wrote, we made a door reading in which
we have not found anything unusual. At 22:30 no one had
entered your room. The report shows that a card passes
through the lock, but the door did not open and no one
entered your room. Also you can see that it was a copy of
the card of the same customer.
Please understand that the hotel can not be responsible
for items that are not deposited in the safe and so it is also
written in the hotel rules.

First of all we would like to apologize about what happened.
I personally attended you and did my best to help, and the
hotel served, as the report tells, at all times.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to
contact me.

With best regards,

Aleksandra Mikula

The location is splendid - right on one of the best beaches in Gran Canaria, dark brown sand.
The swimming is splendid in the big Atlantic rollers. The Hotel is very good although the stair carpets now need replacement. The dining room is attractive, the food and service excellent. The staff are friendly, welcoming and efficient. Cleanliness is very good. We only have one caveat. Rooms on the ground floor (100s) look straight onto the promenade walkway where 800 people a day walk past looking straight into your room. These rooms should be offered at a substantially reduced price. We had a problem with our door lock and the maintenance staff were magnificent and the problem sorted quickly. When we returned to our room later the Hotel had provided a bottle of Cava in an ice bucket for our trouble. We really enjoyed our holiday.

Room Tip: Ask for a room higher than floor one.

We stayed at this hotel on a Saga 'three weeks for the price of two' deal at end February 2013. While this was good value if we had paid the same amount for just two weeks then we'd assess it as 'Average'. We had a good holiday in part due to meeting other guests who we greatly enjoyed being with and the good weather apart from two days of unusual rain and wind.

The pluses are;
1. The staff at the hotel work incredibly hard and have been unfailingly pleasant and helpful.

2. For our tastes the range of food available from the buffet meals has been at least adequate and at times excellent.

3. The hotel does have the advantage of an excellent seafront location. It is very close to a pleasant sandy beach that offers safe bathing with lifeguard supervision.

4. There is a small shopping mall opposite the front of the hotel with pharmacy, newsagent, supermarket, cafes, restaurants, car hire, market stalls, and more.

The minuses;
5. As far as accommodation is concerned the hotel originally allocated us to Room 120, a room that didn't have much in the way of a view of the sea even though all rooms are seaward-facing. It was at a level below the public promenade that separated the hotel from the beach. After three nights we were transferred to Room 804 which had splendid views of Maspalomas.

6. The design of the hotels is such that the bedrooms on the first two floors are beneath the public areas which have hard floor surfaces that transmit noises into the bedrooms. Rooms from the fourth floor and upwards had good sea views.

7. However, the unfortunate fact is that the hotel could do with a major refurbishment. Room 120 was basically sound but did show signs of having been flooded at some stage. It would have been fine otherwise as everything worked. Room 804 was curious as it was a duplex room, with the seating area and bathroom on the lower level and a bedroom reached by stairs. It all seemed somewhat shabby and the bathroom needed a major upgrade (ceiling above the bath, shower curtain rail, lighting). At 5 foot 10 inches I caught the top my head several times when ascending the stairs on the ceiling above the stairs. The balcony afforded splendid views but the glass sliding door was in need of at least lubrication and also a new locking catch.

The public areas are also looking rather tired - new carpets, furniture and lighting would do much to make for a more comfortable environment.

8. At the end of the first week we experienced a major period of bad weather with driving rain and winds over 30 mph. Very noticeably, windows were very draughty and leaked water in many places. This was particularly bad on the eighth floor in both corridor and Room 804.

9. While the food on offer was fine, the restaurant wasn't big enough in relation to the number of bedrooms necessitating two sittings at dinner, 6 and 8pm. The size of all the public areas is an issue where the majority of hotel guests are on all-inclusive terms as they are more inclined to stay within the hotel - the public areas are not large enough to accommodate them all! The design of the dining room, which probably looked great on paper, was less practical, and in some places positively dangerous, for the age group of SAGA guests, with marble floor and slippery steps and slopes.

10. The food itself was themed each day although what was on offer was largely not related to the theme. It would have been better if hot drinks and lunchtime beverages were self service rather than having to be ordered from the waiting staff. At dinner the choice of wines, and all drinks types at the bars, were quite limited as part of the 'all inclusive' tariff in the hotel - more 3* than 4*.

11. This all leads to the room rates. The hotel seems to operate on a B&B, half board, and all inclusive basis. This necessitates all inclusive guests wearing a wristband to identify the from the rest. In my opinion the hotel is operating on a too complicated basis and would benefit from a simpler rate card. Working out what was included in all inclusive, and what was not, would defeat all but the most determined travellers!

12. A cost gripe for many is that Internet access is charged for a rates varying from 6 Euros for a day to 18 Euros for a week. In 2013 I believe that for the slight cost to the hotel of providing an Internet service they should be offering free access throughout the premises. The WiFi signal varied from good around the pool and terrace to very weak for room 804. In fact WiFi from several hotels at least a half kilometre away, Veril Playa, Corona Roja, etc., offered a stronger signal - alas also not free. If every room in the hotel paid for a weeks Intenet access the income to the hotel would have been over 3000 Euros! Super fast broadband (you wish!) wouldn't cost as much!

Given the hotel's pluses - location, service and catering - the less appealing aspects warrant speedy attention. In the age of the Internet the power of sites such as Tripadvisor will likely cast SAGA and the hotel in a less than favourable light if this isn't carried out.

Room Tip: Floors above third floor have good views.
