“Not the same experience as other Brits”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2012

Date of stay: 25 Jan - 1st Feb 12
Tour operator: First Choice
Board: All inclusive

We have stayed at the Feurenventura Princess on earlier holidays but felt that we would like to be closer to the ttown this time.
Having read earlier reviews by British visitors expected a room on the road side of the hotel, was very suprised and happy when we were allocated a room pool side albeit on the ground floor this may have been a result of requesting poolside and quiet at time of booking.
This hotel is smaller than most in the area so seemed quite busy around the pool area during the day but as it is so close to the beach this does not matter.
We found the staff very helpful with almost everybody we spoke to able to speak English, the maid service was particularly good.
Food was of good quality and plentiful which was a suprise as we tend to eat very late in the sittings for most meals.
This is a predominantly German resort and yes they do put their towels over the sunbeds at 06:30 in the morning which is against the hotel policy but who from the hotel is going to enforce the rules.
The beach is 300yds away and a whole lot more room to lounge around on than the pool area of the hotel.
We had a really relaxing break at the Altamarena and although we can undersatnd the previous moans about the poolside/roadside room issue would definately recommened the Altamarena to anybody who is thinking of booking this hotel.
It may well be worth e-mailing the hotel in advance requesting a quiet poolside room soon after you book and you never know you may get the same great break we had.

Room Tip: As stated above, make sure youn request poolside room when booking and e-mail hotel with same reques...

after reading some of the reviews from other first choice guests at this hotel we were pleasantly surprised yes first choice guests do get the worst rooms looking onto a main road and noisy with bars and discos and a taxi rank directly opposite it is noisy but not un bearable you can up grade to a pool view for 9 euros a day
the hotel is quite seventies not as modern as some the good bits and there are a few the rooms are very clean in fact the whole hotel is clean the pool area is very nice
the food is very good with plenty of choice and never to much trouble getting served at the bar although it is outside the main hotel block

Room Tip: seemingly the 9euros is negotiable at reception

Stayed at Alta Marena for a week over christmas and really enjoyed it. The location was excellent and rooms were a very good size and very clean, plenty of clean sheets and towels. The food was very good with lots of choice there was a big gala dinner on christmas eve and all the guests were made to feel special with a champagne reception before eating. We found all staff very friendly and helpful and although english guests were in the minority we had no problems at all. There was entertainment most nights which wasnt all in german. The only thing we were not happy with was the noise from the disco across the road which went on while 6 am,for 4 nights out of the week, but apart from that we had no complaints at all.

Room Tip: Try for a room by the pool where its quiet or you will be kept awake all night because of the disco...

Having recently returned from this hotel after spending a week at this hotel I will just say this hotel " delivers everything it says on the tin". If you read all previous reviews we can mostly agree with everything said(almost) but here's the warning..........if you are British and have booked with First Choice be aware all their allocation of rooms are the street ( and therefore possibly noisy and sunless) side, these are classed as standard. If you request a pool side( sunny and quieter) these rooms cost more and are not available unless the supplement is paid on booking. The mostly German tour operators take up these rooms as they offer their clients room choice. Our room no10 was situated ground level which was below street level and accessed by leaving through the main entrance turn right and and a few short steps to our room with view of sloping path access to hotel. Traffic fumes up above that the plants and palms failed to distract. The room itself was very spacious and had a huge bathroom but as we felt so vulnerable to be so easily accessed by anyone from the street we felt we had to immediately return to reception to ask to be moved....... And were we successful? OF COURSE NOT!!!!! We were told in no uncertain manner it was a standard room which we had booked through First Choice and this company takes the cheapest room allocation if I wanted a pool side to book direct with the hotel website and as they were full this week we could not even change to a room we could feel safer to be using which would have been any that we at least ENTERED the hotel to access.I did repeat visits to plead our case the following day as the air conditioning in this room did not work and we obviously were unable to get any air via opening the door during the night. But yet again I was told not possible, this time the staff sought to re-assure me of our safety by showing the security camera pointing at the door of no10....hmmm pardon me for being thick but if it's acceptable and safe to put guests in this room why the need for a camera?
I was able to lodge my concerns on our arrival day to the First Choice rep Brenda and a report was logged. So if you fancy staying here and book via Thomson or First Choice just BEWARE!!!

Room Tip: Book and pay the extra for poolside room . Requesting is not a guarantee you will get one

Sadly having looked forward to this holiday for months, the whole experience at Altamerena was somewhat underwhelming.
100% focussed on entertaining the German tourist with little or no interest for us Brits, we felt a lot like second class citizens.
Although we were put into a suite (slightly pretentious description) we were facing a noisy road, which we had specifically emailed First Choice & the hotel about upon booking, asking not to be facing the road. It appears that First Choice book inferior rooms and the hotel were not willing to assist with any move, claiming that the hotel was fully booked. Another couple we met on holiday had an awful room on the ground floor by the main entrance. Security was an issue as was their room temperature but again they were told there were no rooms to move to and also that these were the rooms FC buy.
The food was plentifull and you wouldn'y go hungry but it was very samey, tepid and unimaginative. Elbows at dawn with the Germans too; most of whom were extremely rude.
The pool area is kept clean but we had to set our alarm for 6.30am every day in order to get a sunbed. The 'myth' about sunbeds and germans on holiday isn't a myth at all.
Staff were fairly pleasant but the hotel looks shabby and tired and I think some money needs to be spent on bringing it out of the 80's.
Forget the entertainment unless you are fluent in German. ALL of it is focussed on them and from what we saw, it was pretty amateurish.
On the whole we wouldn't go back.

Room Tip: Request direct with hotel room facing the pool.

we stayed here from 5/10/11 until 15/10/11 .The hotel is kept to a good standard, cleaned daily along with your room. The food choice wide and varied you should not go hungry, but the way the food is put out it is all crammed to a rather tight space ,so when a lot off prople try to get food at the same time it can get a bit chaotic. The dining staff were very good and friendly.
The pool area seems quite small for the amount of guests it caters for but as we went to the beach everyday it was not a problem for us,a tip for the beach beds they do a seven day ticket for the price of six but dont advertise this, you have to ask.
Language seems to be a bit of a problem with most of the reception staff they seem to only want to speak to you in german except Frank who spoke very good english making us feel welcome even though he was german. He was very helpful. We do feel that if this hotel is opening up to the british market they need to make more of an effort. No need to speak spanish as they wont answer you, they only seem interested in catering for the german market. On a positive the hotel is nearly right on the beach. We had a pool side room and it was extremly quiet. The rooms are spacious with plenty of storage. If you have enough of the aIl inclusive here we would recommend the la sirena restaurant in the main strip, 2 mins walk from hotel. We didnt feel this hotel was worth the extra cost just to be closer to the beach. There is absolutely nothing to do at this hotel if it rains, lucky for us it didnt rain for the 10 days we were there!!!

Room Tip: rooms on pool side very quiet.

We stayed at this hotel from 1-12 October 2011. It's in a great location - plenty of shops to browse in and bars, restaurents. Shops are open until 10pm. There's a good bus service which stops outside the hotel. We stayed all inclusive. Food was good although a bit repetitive, but that is to be expected. Fruit was lovely and attractively laid out. The layout of the food was rather confusing and could have been better organised so that you could find everything you needed easier. It was a bit chaotic trying to find everything for the first few days!
Coffee - disgusting! I thought I might have got used to it by the end of my holiday - but I didn't! Good choice of teas (Liptons breakfast, herbal, fruit, green) though. Plenty of soft drinks available - and wine/beer in main restaurent - just help yourself. You can fill your bottles up with water here and at the pool bar (free - useful if you are going to the beach). Lovely choice of ice-creams. Staff work really hard to ensure that tables are cleared quickly and food stocks replenished. They have a rule of "long trousers" for the menfolk in the evening but some people didn't bother.
We were in room 378 - at the side of the building - so weren't bothered by any noise (you probably would be if you had the rooms on the street view!). Nice big room and bathroom with bath and lovely power shower above. shampoo etc provided. Plenty of storage and nice size balcony with table and chairs and pull out airer to dry your clothes on. Television with mainly free German channels on - you had to pay if you wanted English!! Although I heard someone say that they were able to get it free as they'd complained at reception that the hotel was discriminatng against English guests - might be worth a try if television is important to you! No kettle/tea-making facilities - we brought our own anyway. There is a fridge in the room (free) and also a safe - cost 2 euros per night plus 7 euros deposit for the key (although the key didn't fit anywhere!!), refundable when key returned! The safe is easy to operate. Room key is credit card type slotted into door - plus the usual card to operate electrics. Nice big beds (2 singles pushed together) - blanket and top and bottom sheet - nice and soft. Extra couple of blankets supplied in the wardrobe should you need it (you won't!). The pillows unfortunately are VERY flat - so do yourself a favour and bring your own (or at least something inflatable!!). I've included some photos in this review so you can see for yourself. Entertainment - the professional ones that we saw (apart from Herbie's disco which was dire!) were very good. The inhouse entertainment was very poor in the evenings - no problem to us as we went out. One thing to be aware of is that the lighting in the evening near the pool area is VERY poor - am surprised that no-one has injured themselves! Could definitely do with some more lighting. Apart from this - I have to say that this hotel is very well equipped for wheelchair users. There are 2 pools (main adult pool also has a ramp going down into the pool) and a splash pool plus plenty of showers around this area. It has to be said that the Germans lived up to their reputation and sunbeds were reserved with the obligatory towels (and then left unused ALL day!!) despite notices displayed by the hotel!
You can check on the menus in the bar to see which drinks (including cocktails) are free with AI tariffs.
The beach is absolutely FANTASTIC and the location of this hotel is really good - a very short walk (use the door by the pool bar and don't forget your door key as you'll need it to get back in!). You'll see the parakeets in the trees as you walk to the beach - we even spotted some chipmunks! We thought we might be bothered by the lighthouse light at night - not at all.
The beach can be used by all - by that I mean textiles and non-textiles (nudist!). The nudist part is supposed to be on the left hand side of the lighthouse as you look out to sea...but it starts just before the lighthouse. If you're not into nudism then just head right - there's plenty of beach. The waves can be dangerous at times - so be careful with young children. There were only a couple of days where the current was really strong - I hurt my coccyx where I was knocked over! All good fun!! If you head right then you can walk either along the beach front or along the promenade to the town of Morro Jable - its a lovely walk with bars and shops along the way (promenade way). If you choose to go to the harbour area then be aware that there are LOTS of uneven steps to get there - not much to see really - and then you have to walk uphill to get back! There is a bar there though :o)
We went to Costa Calma - not much to see really, not compared to where we were! We didn't do any excursions either - wasn't tempted by any. We just wanted a restful relaxing beach holiday which is exactly what we got! One really nice touch was on the day we left - coach pick up wasn't until 17:25 and you have to be out of your room by midday. Luggage went in luggage room (they have luggage scales there - airport charges 12 euros for every kg over - you've been warned!!), and we were still able to enjoy facilities of hotel, food/drink etc and able to book a room for wash/brush up including fresh towels for 1/2 hour all for free. We really appreciated that.
Would we go again? Definitely - and we'd recommend this hotel if you want to be near the beach but don't want to pay exhorbitant prices.

Room Tip: Ask for a pool view or side view
