“Great break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

We decided to seek a bit of winter sun in that dull period just after Christmas & selected Riu Palace mostly on the basis of Trip Advisor reviews. Well once again the community has steered us well & we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay.
Most of what needs to be said has already been mentioned in previous reviews, so I'll limit myself to facts and views that I consider may be helpful.

Reception

Large fairly typical area with various scattered seating arrangements. Reception staff and Concierge were both welcoming and helpful.

Room

Large comfortable room with seating area and decent sized balcony. The wardrobes have "real" coat hangers (a treat this) and plenty of storage space.
We were given a complimentary half bottle of sherry and a fruit basket which I thought was a nice touch. There are however no tea or coffee making facilities in the room - which forces the descent to breakfast a tad earlier than I would have liked.

Pool and Loungers

The pool is a decent size and importantly for me....warm! Lovely. There are many comfortable loungers and we never had an issue finding somewhere to sit. The area is pleasant, overlooks the sea, all in all a good place to be.

Service

The waiting staff, the maids, concierge and receptionists were all unfailingly polite, professional and above all pleasant. We never had to wait a moment longer than necessary for service of any kind.

Food

We went half board and both the included meals are buffet. Buffet is not my favorite as I always pick up things I like and usually end up with a motley assortment of flavours rather than a meal. However that is my problem not the hotel's. The food on offer was all well cooked, appetising and tasty. There is an immense selection, I'm sure most people could find something to enjoy.
The real bonus for me was the freshly made juices at breakfast- absolutely delicious. The coffee too was really good. I have stayed in many hotels, some considerably pricier than the Rui and many have failed in this respect, so well done and thank you to the Riu Palace.

And another thing

I couldn't finish this review without mentioning the New Years Gala Dinner, which was without question superb. There was an exceptional and extravagant display of wonderful food. We were given complimentary wine and Cava. The whole thing was very low key but really well done. I can't commend the staff and hotel enough for the time effort & expense in putting together a memorable New Year celebration.

My wife and I stayed early December for 10 days. Relative to most package hotels this is towards top end quality for comfort, food and ambiance. There are certainly a lot of steps and we didn’t particularly rate the swimming pool area; but the location compensates for this. There’s a stunning long clean beach to walk along and some reasonable restaurants just a stroll away.

If you travel with Thompson make sure you upgrade to sea view. Rooms in block B, the ‘basic’ block, can get traffic noise and the outlook isn’t appealing. The rooms themselves are quite spacious with good balcony areas. Vast majority of guests are German and perhaps the evening’s entertainment is more to their liking; but it seemed very dated to us.

We did have an issue with the room towards the end of our stay when a technician called in and looked at the sofa; he said something along the lines ‘problem’ (in Spanish) and walked out with what appeared to be a board from under the seat cushions. The real problem was that this made it uncomfortable and we suspect the part was taken for use where a sofa was to be converted to a bed. When he didn’t return we complained, twice, but the sofa was never reinstated.

Other than this instance we found the hotel staff attentive and helpful. Chances are we’ll visit again.

Room Tip: upgrade - block D probably best

My wife and I have just spent ten days in this Thomson a la carte hotel. We were not warned that this hotel is a serious contender for having the greatest number of steps of any holiday accommodation in Europe. From the typically grandiose reception area an ascent of seven steep steps is required in order to access the rest of the building. From our room in B block the beach can only be reached as follows: 29 steps to tiled area, 3 steps up, lift down to a landing, 35 further steps including a hazardous spiral concrete staircase down to a door. Through the door and a final 3 steps down to the promenade by the beach. Needless to say that my wife who suffers from MS did not undertake this feat. One can barely move without taking steps up or down - there are even two in every bedroom
Thomson make no mention in their brochure of this hotel being inappropriate for disabled customers so I shall be contacting them to ask that this is done in future

Room Tip: Sea view rooms avoid traffic noise - but avoid all rooms if you're not fully fit

There again for the second time, the place with NO kids was FANTASTIC. The service, food and hotel is great for my wife and I. I thought it couldnt be as good as the last time but its one of my favorite relaxing hotels to park my backside in 80degrees of sun and relax. 99.9% of the people who go are German I think they keep the standards up. I only heard one other English acdent whilst being there. The rooms are so big with a lounge attached to them with large flat screen wich works. If it be your bag channel 18 shows all the English PL games. The place is imaculate its great for winter sun.

Room Tip: All rooms are great. If you have difficulty in walking stay on the flat

We have just got back from a weeks holiday at the Riu Palace Jandia. The hotel is in an excellent location. Perfect for us - a family of three with an 8 year old son. Our son loved the beach and the sea. The views from the hotel were fabulous. The weather excellent apart from a flash flood on Wednesday. Really really enjoyed the holiday. The staff were superb, very attentive and extremely professional at all times. A lot of German visitors to the hotel and to that part of the island. All very nice. The hotel is expensive and perhaps could do with a makeover in the near future. The beds were not very comfortable, The decorations, furniture and carpets are a little too old.
Cleaning was a really good standard. Plenty of hanging space in the wardrobes. The room was large. Very near the beach and near to the old port of Morro del Jable which is a lovely traditional town.
We stayed in the D block which was a good location.
We booked a flight with Easy Jet which was not particularly good on the way home as we were delayed and had to wait a long time on the plane (1.5 hours) before take off.
We hired a car through Hertz - prebooked in England. Tried to upsell with insurance and fuel when we collected the car.
It was about an hour and a half's drive to the hotel from the airport. We arrived at about 11.30pm and were given cava on arrival at the hotel and our son an orange cocktail. We then were shown to the restaurant where our buffet had been set out for us, really nice - smoked salmon, pork and salad with bread and fresh fruit.
The food in the hotel was excellent. Top quality ingredients and expertl prepared. Lots to choose from at breakfast, from cold buffet to hot breakfast, cereals, fruit, yoghurt, fresh fruit juice, breads, cakes - something fro everybody. The evening meal was also very plentiful and varied. The salmon cooked in salt was good as was the canarian fish stew. Everything was excellent, the varied salads, the meat, fish, vegetables, sweets, fruit and cheese. Something to suite everybody.
Would recommend the hotel, be aware that the beds are not very comfortable, there are plenty of steps and everywhere is a little tired.

Room Tip: A room with a sea view

The Riu Palace is situated at the end of a 12 mile beach within a 10 minute walk of the old town. It is a bit old fashioned but the superb management, friendly staff and cleanliness make it a personal favourite. We recommend the bed and breakfast option as it allows one to enjoy the outdoor restaurants in Morro Jable - El Mattorel and Vesubio are good as is a drink in Confraidos (where you can sit around 2 metres from the ocean). The hotel is divided into 4 sections - C and D are best followed by B. I suggest avoiding A if you mind overlooking the pool area. There are a lot of steps so hotel is not suitable for very old or very young. The guests are mainly German and reserved - the live entertainment in the evening is a hoot for the wrong reasons. We spent daytime around the pool area and found it relaxing - the is a good snack bar close by. A few times a day we take the hotel lift down to the beach. It is a super beach to walk on and down by the lighthouse the is a good naturist area for us uninhibited types to have a swim. This was our 6th visit to the Riu and we will be back for a 7th!

Just confirming previous posts really, this is a great hotel, very quiet (no children) the food is the best we've had in the Canaries and we've stayed at a few of the 'top' hotel chains on Lanzarote and Fuerteventura over the years. Accommodation is very good, at least four channels of english (well American) TV including Fox films. The staff are all helpful and keen to please. There are a lot of steps though, but they offset the food intake! A good touch is the provision of a changing room if your flight is late in the day so you can still have a good day on the beach, grab a shower and go. The only slight negative is car parking, we hired a car at the airport (cicar) because of the high taxi costs, there are approximately 7 spaces outside the hotel. If they've gone you have to park on the street that leads down to the hotel. Average guest age was quite high and mostly German. If you have the opportunity go to Playa Barca, which is this side of Costa Calma, it is a fabulous beach. I'd actually rate it higher than the beach at Jandia which is excellent. On the basis of this stay we will look to stay in Riu hotels elsewhere.
