I stayed at the Pirates Village for a week in August with my partner and two children and we had a great holiday!!!
As we approached the apartments everyone on the bus was talking about how great they looked, and the kids couldn’t wait to get inside! I stayed in these apartments a number of years ago so I could really appreciate the transformation as I had seen the before and after version.
The biggest transformation was the pool area – which is first class! We absolutely loved it here and were quite happy to spend the day sun bathing and dipping in and out of the pool while the kids spent most of the time in the shallow pool splashing about. I am normally a beach person and wouldn’t really stay by the pool but with this place I didn’t want to leave! The pirate show at the pool was fantastic and I wish we had got to see it more than once!
The reception and dining areas are lovely and my kids were especially taken with the ‘treasure’ situated above the bar in the dining room, my daughter wanted me to tell the pirates that it was hiding up there.
The rooms are basic but clean and spacious with comfortable beds – what else do you want when you are on holiday? The fact that we had an apartment rather than just a room was great as we weren’t on top of each other. Having a fridge, kettle and toaster was also a big bonus although we only used the fridge for drinks (for out of all inclusive hours). The bathroom was again basic but fine with a powerful shower. We always had hot water (I’ve seen other reviewers complain that they didn’t have hot water in the evening for showers; maybe if they had got ready a little earlier they wouldn’t have had a problem)! Our bedroom was facing the road but not once did noise from the road waken us – (again a complaint by other reviewers who I think must be light sleepers)! The only noise that wakened us was terrible thunder during one night (which was loud enough to waken the dead)!
The all inclusive food was fine, not 5* but what else would you expect from a 3* establishment and paying a 3* price? We always found something to eat with plenty of choice at breakfast time. There were all types of bread and rolls, cold meats, cheese, 3 types of eggs, a full English breakfast or fruit and yoghurt. We usually had a bigger meal at lunchtime rather than dinner as we found more options for us then. The kids loved the pizza and ate that most days. I do think the ‘exclusive children’s buffet’ could be improved and maybe a couple more choices available. My children wouldn’t eat the fish fingers, chicken nuggets or the pasta either. They DID like the ham, sausages and burgers but these weren’t offered very often. I would also suggest that they put out an alternative pasta sauce for the kids rather than just the tomato (a mushroom or carbornara sauce would be a nice change).
There was always a wide range of desserts at lunch and dinner time and the ice cream was beautiful…which kept my children very happy!
One thing I must mention about the kitchen and dining room staff – they work very hard and long hours and deserve a medal each! We never experienced a wait for a table, they were cleared and changed very rapidly and the kitchen staff were in and out of the kitchen replenishing food so it didn’t run out.
The bar was great and my kids loved the fact that they could go up themselves for soft drinks/slush puppies and ice cream/lollies whenever they liked (during all inclusive hours 10:30am – 11:00pm). My partner liked a beer or 4 in the evening while I enjoyed the cocktails!
The kids disco in the evening was great (if anyone has a list of songs from it I would really appreciate it) – the kids loved the dance routines! Another big mention to the Entertainment team who were so energetic and enthusiastic – I don’t know how they kept going!!!
The evening entertainment was good but maybe a couple too many pirate shows. (I know it is the ‘Pirates Village’ but having a couple of nights with something different would maybe balance it out a bit. Maybe a hypnotist or tribute act – even a talent contest/karaoke night would be good.
All in all I have to say that we really enjoyed ourselves and had such a relaxing holiday. The Pirates Village has done brilliantly for its first season. For a 3* rating they are 1st Class! I know the apartments are being renovated this winter and I’d say with a few minor tweaks here and there the 2014 season will be amazing…yes I will most definitely be returning!!!
Thank you Pirates Village for enabling us to have such a great family holiday – see you next year!!!
