I stayed at the Gran Santa Ponsa with my elderly Mum for 10 night all inclusive from 22/09 to 02/10. We had an initial mix up with the spanish receptionist (grumpy male) who gave us a key to an already occupied apartment! He also didn't explain the swipe key system to turn on the electric. Not a good start!
We found our apartment clean if a little shabby, several of the lightbulbs were out and one of the terrace plastic chairs collapsed sending me flying! The shower flooded daily as the curtain was no where near big enough for the bath. The maids came in every 2 days to change towels.
The all inc food was ok. I suffered a few tummy upsets as did Mum. I wouldn't advise eating the hot dog bar snacks as I had a very uncomfortable flight back home and that was my last meal taken.
Those were the not so good points.. on to the much better.
I can not praise Jayne, Paul, Elvira and Angel enough (bar, dining and reception staff). They literally ran around after guests for 12 hrs a day, every day. Angel could come across as a little stern, but he was very kind to my Mum when she hurt her knee, giving us a bag of ice and asking after her the next day. Jayne was a constant source of information, helping us to use the public transport to Palma. Paul was a sweety, making us laugh and taking a genuine interest. He is Perfect and Irish (private joke) The lovely Elvira was always helpful at reception when changing our inclusive card which failed 4 times over the 10 days.
The staff really do make this holiday. We found the "entertainment" a bit crap, with the exception of the hypnotist, who was, quite frankly, hilarious. Mary, the in house/kids entertainer seemed to work her socks off too.. although the kids songs every night will haunt me for months to come!
As others have mentioned, the location of the hotel is brilliant. We ate out a few times and found the chinese restaurant just down the road very good quality and surprisingly inexpensive.
I can't understand the comments about transfer times from Palma airport as Santa Ponsa was one of the first drop offs from our bus (we used A2B transfers) and took a little under an hour. Public buses took around 30mins direct (bus stop at the round about, bus no 102) and cost 3.25 euro.
One word of warning. If you want to go on a few excursions PLEASE avoid paying around 12 euro to go to Palma market, it's not worth going, very few stalls and extremely pushy sellers. We also booked with the same local agent to go to Dragonarra Island at 25 euro each for a 5 hour trip. We turned up 3 days running, only to have to return after waiting over an hour each time to the agent to be told the sea was too choppy or, as on the last day, there wasn't enough people to make it worth the captain going! We were so disappointed and felt taken advantage of. The boat owner was quite happy to take a boat load for a 2 hour trip for half the cost. We had a refund, but it took the shine off the holiday.
Santa Ponsa itself is a truely beautiful place. I will certainly be returning, but probably not to this hotel as its impending refurbishment is aimed at families and not adults.
Room Tip: Ask for a high room away from the bar area, which gets quite noisy at night.
