“Thomson rated 4 star.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2012

Not as described in the Thomson brochure. Booked and paid for a 2 bedroom and got a 1 bedroom. The suites are very basic with no drawers, only mirror was in the bathroom with the hairdryer. The settee was not long enough or wide enough for anyone to sleep on yet this suite was meant for 5 people. The communal areas and facilities were more in line with 2-3 star rated hotels. The food got worse as days passed with a poor salad bar, chips only and cheap quality main courses. The race for sunbeds and insufficient brollies was laughable at 8am every morning. The hotel was unbelievably noisy both inside and outside and a night club along the road closing at 2am woke guest located on the road side of the hotel. The evening entertainment was so bad I felt embarrased for the performers.

Room Tip: Thomson will not change allocated rooms or honour special requests. Read other reviews before bookin...

4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2012

We have recently returned from an all inclusive 7 night stay at the Golden Avenida Suites in Salou and have had an excellent family holiday. Our party consisted of me, my partner and his 10 year old daughter. After reading many reviews on Trip Advisor I was prepared for some of the criticisms so frequently stated on here.

We arrived before our room was ready so we took advantage of our all inclusive stay by having lunch and a few drinks before unpacking in our room which was ready an hour after our arrival. We had a pool view room overlooking the kids pool which was great. I had read about the roadside rooms being noisy, which I can well imagine as there are a few bars and clubs in the streets next to the hotel. Our room was spacious, clean, and with plenty of storage. The bathroom was large, and yes, there was only one large mirror in the bathroom which wasn't a problem as I was prepared after reading reviews and took one of my own! The terrace had table chairs and a clothes line. There were also two flat screen TV's with BBC, CBBC, ITV, Ch4 etc. The beds were rock hard as some people on here have already stated but we found this OK and we were not expecting luxury.

The pool was the great strength of the hotel as it was large enough for all guests to take a dip and play with inflatables without feeling over crowded. As stated in nearly every review, there is a problem with reserving sunbeds. However we found that if you wandered down to the pool at around 3pm there were always one or two beds free near the pool (as long as you aren't bothered about prime position). There was also a pool terrace with ample table and chairs which we also used if there were no sunbeds available.

I was apprehensive about the food after reading some negative feedback on here but I am pleased to say we all enjoyed the selection available and always found something filling for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A few times we ate at around 8.30pm which we found the most hectic time!

The bar had a good selection of drinks for all inclusive guests. Cruzcampo lager was on tap as well as locally produced wines and spirits. All inclusive bar ended at 11pm. The bar and restaurant staff are excellent and were always friendly and seemed to work extremely long hours!

Entertainment was good. Thomson reps provided entertainment for young children till 10pm and then the later entertainment would consist of either a rep show or a local act. As stated previously in other reviews, the reps are excellent and work tirelessly to entertain and answer any questions you may have.

The location of the hotel could not be better. Five minutes down the road and you are at the beach. Salou is lively and very busy but La Pineda (10 minutes via local bus) was another lovely resort with a lovely clean beach and quieter than Salou. We would strongly recommend the local bus service (Plana) as we used this to get to La Pineda, Cambrils and also Port Aventura.

Overall this hotel fulfilled all of our expectations and the negative comments from some contributers on here should be taken with a pinch of salt. Thomson and hotel staff work extremely hard to make this an excellent family choice for a great memorable holiday. My partners daughter wants to come here next year as she loved her holiday and we did too.

Room Tip: Pool view rooms are the best

Stayed here for 2 weeks n just returned.....weather fabulous on average mid to high 30's everyday....somedays started off overcast but sun soon came shining through......room was lovely...cleaned everyday......towels were replaced if you left yours on floor to say you wanted them changed n usually changed the beds the same time.....air con was lovely and a godsend....we overlooked the pool on the 3rd floor which was a little noisy late evening but no noisier than the parents allowing their kids to run up and down the corridor at midnight !!!!
Food was lovely...very varied....always hot....always restocked quickly although the restaurant could get very busy at peak times but we always managed to get a table easily.
Reps....well god they work so hard...hats off to Sunny Sarah, Jazzy Jimmy,Smashin' Ash and especially Crazy Craig who my daughter had a soft spot for.......Mollie's really missing youu Craig lol xx
We did 4 trips....Bonivesta market......sunday morning stroll n bargains to be had......Costa cruise on the med.....hot and the swim opportunity was really lovely.....Monserrat.....full day, very hot and very interesting......day and night trip to Barcelona.....full day and well worth it with a trip to nou camp, the 92 olympic village, the unfinished church and the the fountains...amazing...thanks to Mike the tour guide ..he was very informative...
On the whole a fab hotel and holiday but what lets this place down is the surrounding area....the streets are dirty, smelly, cluttered with litter, overflowing bins....very busy......

Firstly when we arrived our first impressions were that no way that this was going to be a good family holiday. The Hotel looked nothing like what we expected and the location was slap bang in the middle of a sea of other hotels....
However, after the first day, and we had settled in, we realised that it wasn't the hotel that was the problem it was us...We were used to going on selective holidays, and not family package ones like this...Soon after that, we adapted to the environment, and we had a good relaxing time....
The hotel itself is very clean inside and out. The staff are very friendly, and helpful....The room was not huge, however it did have a separate room with 2 single beds that suited our 2 lads (16 & 12)...TV's in both the main room and the boys room (plenty of English Channels too)...The beds were solid (major downside), and the only mirror in the room, was situated inside the bathroom, which is fine, if there is only one person, however, 4 of us trying to get organised at night proved to be a bit of a challenge....(fit another mirror....easy peasy)....
Most hotels who claim to be 4 star or above, normally have a safe in the room. There was a safe in the room, however, you need to rent a lock for it, which will cost you over 30 euros...
Also the wireless connection is absolutely shocking, unless you try to use it last thing at night or first thing in the morning....If you are a regular Facebook or Twitter user, prepare to be disappointed. (and its only available in the main reception area.)
We were all inclusive, so the we expected everything to be included, however, not all drinks were included, and not all ice creams for the kids were included either. The drinks that were included were OK, the beer is Cruzcampo (local Spanish brew), Whisky (JB rare and Ballantynes), Vodka (not so bad ....Schmirnoff), Gin (a selection of Spanish stuff and there was Gordons)....
The selection of food was very good, I thought that they had catered for all ages and dietary requirements. Couldn't fault the quality of any of it......If you wanted a carafe of wine of beer with either lunch or dinner, that wasn't a problem....
Out at the pool...The pool is a great size, and was never to busy in the water, however, if you wanted to get your hands on a sun lounger, then, I'm afraid it's a queue at 7.45am every morning to get your towels laid out....
The Thomson's reps are brilliant...Jimmy, Ash & Sarah are the main 3 that keep the place going day and night, with all of the daytime activities around the pool, and then the night time stuff in the main bar area....The acts that are brought in at night are good, but some of the nights the entertainment was done by Jimmy and the team, and this was as good as some of the other acts....Be prepared to get involved with the night time stuff, as the reps get the audience involved with all the games...have a go it's great fun, and you might even win a Top Dog T-shirt.....( I was the queen in the recreation of the Royal wedding) funny as....
All in all, We enjoyed ourselves over the 11 days,

Cheers

John

I took myself and my 3 children (aged 2, 11 and 13) here and have returned with mixed opinions. Our first thought was that it was good, albeit slightly disappointed that we had been assigned a room right next to a busy road with not a pretty view. We called down to reception to inform them that the lock on the sliding door to our balcony was broken and within minutes they had sent a repair man to fix it. The staff on reception were always very courteous and helpful. However, although the rooms were cleaned every day, I felt the level of cleanliness did leave something to be desired. In the restaurant you were always greeted with a smile from Ana and there was an amazing choice of things every day. However, being a vegetarian I did struggle because there was hardly anything you could have as a main course. I often ate from the salad bar and topped it up with chips and potatoes because of the lack of a hot food choice. The choices of meat dishes were good though. My main bug bear was the huge amount of noise from Spanish men singing at the tops of their voices when the clubs kicked out on numerous occasions. It was so loud that I found it hard to contain my anger because it woke not only myself, but my children and other guests. These drunken yobbs one night were also kicking the wheelie bins across the road. I also complained about the fact that inconsiderate guests were laying claim to sun beds by putting their towels on them way before they even got to the pool area. I was told that there was nothing the hotel could do, because if they removed the towels they could then be accused of people's personal belongings going missing. We found it very difficult to find one sun bed at 10.30am because selfish people had bagged several in a prime area and then turned up much later to sun themself by the pool. I thought the hotel should have stopped this practice as everyone had just as much right to a sun bed as the next person. Also, I found the local area to be smelly (smells from un-emptied bins and drains) and the paths covered in dog poo - not very nice when you are wheeling a buggy. This said, we did enjoy ourselves on most days and the staff in the Creche were lovely and very friendly, making my daughter's visits there very pleasant. The Thomson reps were lovely too. All in all it was ok, but I have to say, was glad to come back to the UK. PS If you want to eat in a good restaurant, try the Orient Express - brilliant service and a lot of Spaniards ate there - a good sign I think!

Room Tip: Rooms by the pool are much better than those next to the road.

Location: Was OK, lot of noise at night as there are quite a lot of bars in the area, it's also a walk to the beach.
Room: Very clean and nice decor however....the bed was 'ROCK' hard!!!! also the only mirror was in the bathroom, there was 5 of us so it made getting ready a bit of a mission, as the mirror would get steamed up! (ladies will understand my moan)
Also, the air con.......was like a cool breeze!
Entertainment: Was good, the reps were very nice and the bar staff were lovely :)
N.b: If you want to get a sun lounger set your alarm for 7.40am people start queuing way past the lifts for the doors to open @ 8.15am.
All Inclusive: We went all in, and it was 'rubbish' you can only get certain food and drinks it's very limited and also if you want to sit and eat around the pool you can only do it at certain times as they wont serve food when the restaurant is open (and that's stuffy and hot) crap air con again! all drinks stop @ 11pm and you can't get a drink before 10am. You get ice - cream however it's a selection of about 5. The good stuff you have to pay for.
The food in the restaurant was good and then bad it's very hit and miss, and pretty much the same stuff at lunch served at night...and then it kind of is more a less the same every night. Breakfast was pretty rubbish also. The fish bite's the kids had were 'dark grey' I don't think fish is meant to be that color!! however the waitress was lovely :) and to be fair there were some dishes that were good....all be it very salty!!!! It could be great but is just fall's off the mark!
This is not a 4 Star! 3 - Yes :)
Also the lifts keep breaking! so be warned!

Room Tip: Take a mattress topper!

Having just spent two weeks at this hotel, with two children aged three and one, I highly recommend it. All of the hotel staff are professional, genuinely welcoming and friendly. The rooms are spacious and well kept - our's was not facing the pool area but quiet at night. The beds were so hard it was like sleeping on a slab of rock - but surprisingly we slept extremely well. This may have in part to do with how well our children slept - both tired out by all the fun they had. The pools are fantastic and large enough to be rarely over crowded. The play parks, games room and soft play provide an alternative entertainment. Tea Time Live could cater for younger children better and perhaps not be so repetitive. My eldest went to Kids Club once and refused to go again, which is out of character, although the Reps did little to inspire him when we went to ask about what sessions would include. A drop in session at the crèche for parents and babies would be helpful for all to get to know the staff.
There is so much to do in and around this Hotel - it will not disappoint!

Room Tip: Forgo the pool view and get a quiet room.
