Me and my best friend booked to stay at the California Palace as part of a package holiday with Thomas Cook. We had a very pleasant stay here for a number of reasons.
Firstly, the hotel is in the old town, which is the quieter area, however there are still a good number of small shops for all your needs and a pharmacy just up the road. We found the area to be very nice because it was quiet, with this being our first holiday alone and us being young, we wanted to go out clubbing every night, this meant that coming back to our room afterwards was very pleasant because it was so quiet we could easily get a few hours kip!
The staff were all very friendly, and knowing we were on our own, they were very courteous and helped us with any issues we had, answering any questions we had. The good thing about the hotel is that it offers a 24hr reception which meant that even if we were stumbling in at 4 in the morning, there was still somebody there to help us if we needed it!
Me and my friend don't really enjoy going on the beach as we find it too busy and neither of us really like the sea but obviously, we did go to explore and we had to walk alongside it on the promenade anyway when we were walking into the town. We thought it was a very nice beach, always kept extremely clean and there was always plenty to do there in the day, and at night with the beach parties and whatnot :)
The food at the hotel was pleasant, I wouldn't say it's the best food i've ever tasted, but it wasn't exactly horrible. There is a buffet on for every meal I believe, which is ideal I think so that you can have whatever you want rather than having to chose from a set menu. I ate the salad mostly, which was all very nice and you could tell it was fresh, there was hot food provided also including pasta, spaghetti, fish, beef burgers, chips, meats, chicken nuggets etc. The dessert buffet was very tasty, I think the chef mentioned something about the pastries being from a local bakery? But there was lots of choices, ice cream, yoghurt, lots of fresh fruit etc.
There is everything you could possibly need in this hotel, the rooms were large and very clean, with the cleaning being done at pretty much any point in the day which you wanted as long as you left your sign on the door to state you wanted it cleaned, our balcony was also a fairly large size with our own set of chairs and a small table, the bathroom was lovely and clean also with the choice of a shower and a bath with a nice large mirror. Our room had a huge wardrobe, two single beds, sofabed, television (which we didn't use), personal safe (which we also didn't use), fridge (which we again, didn't use..all due to the prices), dresser and chair and a phone. The only negative I would say there was is the prices whilst there, i can't remember the exact amounts but the fridge was something like two euros per day, safe five euros a day, and television four euros a day or something, I think it may have been more actually. The drinks and food other than what are included in your package e.g. drinks/food from the bar etc come as a bit of a steep price, it was 2.10 for a tiny bottle of lemonade! There is also WiFi, but you have to pay for that, i think it was 1 hour-1 euro, 2hrs-2 euros, 3hrs-3euros and then 10 hours was 6 euros. There was a variety of evening entertainment on from what we saw advertised everyday, although we never actually used that particular facility.
Overall, me and my friend had a very pleasant holiday, we only came back on the 10th July, we had stayed for 9 nights and we miss it very much! Every part of our holiday was amazing, from the nightlife, to our time in and around the pool. This hotel is lovely, very welcoming and has a lovely atmosphere. I think I would definitely consider staying here sometime in the future :)
I'd say the best rooms are those which face out onto the front of the hotel-not on to the pool...
