“Refurb vs Older apartments”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012

Stayed here last week of August 2012 in a 2 bed 1 bath apartment. On arrival we were dealt with efficiently and offered a ground floor refurbed apartment. It was smart and tidy as you would expect but the balcony was overlooked by mini golf which was still ongoing at 9.00pm. It also looked as though there would not be too much sunshine in this particular apartment so we requested a change and were offered an older style apartment further back in the resort on a top floor setting, apartment Mirage C3 to be precise. A good choice!!

Views from the balcony were superb straight out over the Med and we had a hidden gem right outside our front door by way of the sun terrace that hardly anyone visited during our whole stay.

As for being near the back of the resort that was also a bonus as we were away from the bulk of the noise from the main pool and announcements / entertainment but still within easy walking distance of the same when we wanted to go down. There is also another pool at the back of resort which is quieter with more sunbed availability (which looked like a problem around the main pool although I did see the lifeguards issuing warning leaflets to absent "bed hoggers" and I guess that their towels would be removed to make way for somebody who really wanted the bed)

We had cause to have a DVD player changed which was dealt with efficiently and without fuss. Service was very good from all aspects, although we did experience the odour of a dirty mop having been used to clean our apartment after one of the three cleaning sessions during the week.

Benalmadena itself is looking a bit tired and needs tidying up but that's all money I suppose which is not really available in Spain at the present time. A walk to the marina (about 20 - 30mins) in Malaga direction revealed a great selection of shops and restaurants to choose from.

A pleasant week in a clean and tidy older style apartment. :-)

Room Tip: Don't just assume that refurbished will be better, our choice of an older apartment was good for...

My parents and i had the most beautiful time at this resort. Service was excellent and when we had mentioned we were having our anniversaries, a knock on the door was followed by champgne and a card from the staff!!!! We were in an older 2 bedroom apartment but no issue with this. Our views of the Meditereranean and spacious deck gave us the feeling of being special. Staff at the front desk were so helpful with ideas of exploring the area. Thanks to all the staff for making our week one we will truly remember.

Just returned from our holiday where we stayed at the Sahara Sunset hotel. The apartment was lovely, well facilitated and clean. The pool was apt for children and adults alike with attentive lifeguards. The Cashba restaurant served amazing food and the staff were lovely. We stayed a couple of evenings for the entertainment which was the usual, had a nice time. The hotel staff we could not fault, friendly and went out of their way to help. The hotel is located 5 minutes away from the beach which is perfect. The on site supermarket is very reasonably priced. All in all we had a fab time. Thank you :)

- Arrived on Tuesday for 2 nights, could not get the 3 nights so had to book another diamond hotel for the 1 night in a 1 bedroom apartment.

- Check in was fast, arrived around 11am and apartment was ready, which annoyed me a bit as sounded like the apartment had been free the night before! staff were good at check in with no problems.

- I was very disappointed with the apartment for its location, it was across the road out of the resort, which meant we had to cross the road to pools etc. I new as we was staying for 2 nights we would have what ever 1 bedroom apartment is left, but for a timeshare owner this annoyed me.
However the apartment was big for 4 people, the sofa bed was not a double sofa bed, so be warned if you have got 4 people traveling. The balcony was great big with 4 chairs and table and a sun lounger, kitchen was a bit small, but well equipment, and a small bedroom was cosy. Air conditioning was good, and a nice bathroom.

Pool area
There are 2 pools within the resort, the main pool has music and entertainment on all day, the entertainment staff worked well and really hard as they got lots of people joining in with games etc, and all the other guests seemed to enjoy it.
Lots of sunbeds around both pools, even by 2pm! The lifeguard puts notices on sunbeds if you are gone for lunch with a warning, most guests received these even when they just go to get lunch, I understand hes doing his job but when there's another 30 sunbeds free, it is not affecting other guests trying to get sunbeds.
We spent the 2 days at the quiet pool which was lovely, however this was not a quiet pool thanks to other guests which were clearly non timeshare owners, where they let there children scream and run around the pool all day, and jump into the pool getting guests soaked, even adults started complaining to the children and parents to stop. I understand its summer holidays, but if you want your children to do this, go to the main pool not the quiet pool!

If you are a diamond timeshare like myself be prepared to get a less quality room, I met a lovely family who was booked on diamond in a 2 bedroom apartment and they was in the apartment block over the road which are not 'refubished' however the apartments by the pool and nicer ones seemed to off been given to non timeshare for those who have been booked on websites such as booking.com so if you are timeshare I would complain straight away to reception which is what I will be doing to diamond now.
- once again if you are non timeshare be prepared that the owners should get better rooms, so dont be disspointed if you do get a lower quality room as timeshare should get preference over you as you have booked for a cheap rate.

Pool bar was lovely, food reasonable and good and the spanish waiter was excellent! most friendliest staff ive seen in a long time!

Location is excellent, 1 minute walk to beach, 20 minute walk to excellent theme park at the hill and 10 minute walk to 24 bar strip and the marina for bars and clubs for the 18-30's.

Any questions please message me and im happy to help :)

Room Tip: Ask for a pool view room to avoid the block over the road and refurbished if you are a timeshare own...

Accommodation is excellent, very spacious with all new mod cons (newly refurbished apartment). We like this resort as there is so much to do in the area. The pools (lifeguards will remove towels from beds not used which is brilliant) in the resort are great and then the sea just across the road.

We enjoy the evening entertainment (6 nights per week) but were very disappointed to find on our return visit that Diamond have enforced this to only three nights a week and it now takes place inside - I can stay at home and sit indoors. People come on holiday to have fun and enjoy themselves not stuck inside in the middle of August and there is not as much room indoors, so if you do go out elsewhere first you may not get a seat anyway. For those who don't want to listen to it there are apartments at the other end of the resort and it isn't as if it the entertainment went on that late anyway. Such a shame as the staff at the Casbah are great and we ate there quite a few nights, it really is a shame.

Room Tip: Not had a bad room and have stayed here quite a lot

It is always nice to get people returning to the resort because they have enjoyed their time spent at the resort previously. The Committee members at Sahara Sunset Club decided, during the summer months that the Casbah restaurant should have live entertainment outside 3 times a week. The rest of the week entertainment takes place inside the restaurant. Obviously in the winter months we do keep the evening entertainment indoors. Whilst we appreciate that in the summer it is lovely to be able to relax and sit outdoors, we do have to consider those guests who would prefer less noise and whose balcony or terrace would be close to the entertainment area.

We hope to welcome you back to the resort in the not too distant future.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2012

We were at Sahara sunset for two weeks from 4th august 2012. Liked it. Will try to tell you every tip and give advise. First to start with is a taxi from airport to resort. If you have never been to Malaga airport before the taxi’s are on your right from the exit. Once you came out of the building of the airport you just turn right and walk 100 yards and there is a stand with the prices. So its 25-27 euros to get to Sahara Sunset. The whole journey is about 15 mins. On arrival expect that you will not be given room til 4pm. Yet you can leave your luggage in special luggage room. That is the tip: when you are packing your bags put swimwear 4 the whole family and a towel separately that you can have an easy access to it and can take it with you while waiting 4 your room. You can change into different clothes and be comfortable from the minute you have arrived. Few hours when you are waiting you already can enjoy at the swimming pool. Most likely it will be no beds at the big pool, but (!!!) there is another pool in resort and usually there are free sunbeds beside that pool. How to get there: from the reception go upstairs to the pool area, walk to kids pool, walk around the building (which is at your left), you will see fountain, walk along it and small pool is on your right (few steps up, then down). When we got a phone call from Resort few days before we went to Spain we were told that beach towels are provided. Well, on arrival we discovered that its going to be a charge of 20 euros per towel onto your credit/debit card and when you return the towels 16 euros per towel will be returned to your card. 4 euros will be for renting the towel. If you want your towel to be exchanged to a fresh one during your stay you will pay additional 1 euro per towel.
We were in 2 bedroom accommodation, had TV in large room and in 1 bedroom, it was great. No washing machine, no dishwasher, Had ironing facilities (but I only discovered it 15 minutes before we left apartment to go back home).
Resort has their own supermarket with everything you can possibly need, but its more expensive. The closest large supermarket is about ¾ of a mile from resort. Go down to the main road, turn right, walk to McDonalds, it will be a roundabout infront of you. Turn right and walk another 400 yards. Big supermarket is on your left hand side (further you will see another roundabout). If you want your stay to be not very costly for you – everything can be bought in this supermarket (mind that if you buy fruits there is a scales in fruit and veg section and you need to put your bag of fruit on the scale and press a button according to your selected fruit and it will print the label 4 you, stick it onto the bag; if you do not do it it will not be excepted at the till !!!)
Plenty of restaurants nearby, on the same side of the main road on right and left, or cross the road and walk to the left to beach area, dozens of restaurants in there too.
We went to Aqualand for a day. Did not like it. Bus is going to Aqualand 3 times in the morning from the bus stop opposite McDonalds and returnes 3 times in evening (5.15pm, 6.15pm and 7pm) Entrance is very expensive. Once you are there you need to rent a locker (10 euros deposit, then 5 euros back when you return the key). Food and drinks are ridiculously expensive in there so take your food with you or expect to pay 20-30 euros in there for a snacks (a bottle of lemonade 500mls is 3.50euros). We were disappointed that you need to stand in a queue for 20-30 mins to go on a slide, the “fun” is only 15 seconds!!! 4 Some if the slides you need a doughnut which has to be rented (I think its 5euros 4 it). The problem is – once you have your doughnut you are glued to it – you can not leave it to go to different slides, you have to carry it about wherever you go and leave someone to guard it if you go onto a slides with no doughnuts. So it was a disappointment for us, we were there from 11am til 5 pm and did not try even half of the slides because could not be bothered to stand in the queue. In my opinion Aqualand was not built thoughtfully, them doughnuts should be sent up to the top on elevator (conveyer belt) and not to be rented out to public.
Entertainments in evening were rubbish. We were “lucky” to be there during Olimpic Games, Resort had their own Olimpics every day to entertain kids and it was annoying, too noisy, thats why after 2 days we started to go to different pool, it was no noise in there. Daily visits to the pool from Suncare advisor was not “my cup of tea” either.

Thank you very much for your detailed review – we’re really pleased to read that you enjoyed your stay at the Sahara Sunset Club!

We’re sorry that you had a few concerns during your stay, however. We make every effort to highlight any additional charges which our guests might incur during their stay, and details of these can be found on the resort’s Fact Sheet on our website – we encourage all guests to take a look at this prior to arrival, as it contains variety of useful information about the resort. Details of any additional charges will also be printed on the booking confirmation.

We’re also sorry to read that the on-site entertainment offered at Sahara Sunset wasn’t to your liking. We must advise that your review came as a surprise to us, as we receive very few complaints about the entertainment offered at our resorts, and the DRI Games have proved to be extremely popular with the majority of our guests.

We really hope that these issues didn’t mar an otherwise enjoyable stay at the Sahara Sunset Club, and that you’ll choose to return here. We look forward to being of service to you again soon!

1 - Check-in ok but VERY slow, a Spanish family in front of us kept the receptionist talking for over 30 mins
2 - The room was one of the older type but was very clean and had all we need so no complaints there.
3 - The main pool was so noisy that we felt like we were on a club 18-30 holiday, the animation man seem to spend all day shouting down the microphone and playing music, we did tell reception but they said use the other pool but there were never loungers there to use. They had an Olympic event on or something.
4 - The small supermarket was ok on-site, had all we need and not that dear
5 - The gym and spa was nice and we went there in the day for some peace and quiet
6 - The Kasbah was good for food although the night time service was a bit slow and you were not guaranteed to get what you ordered but apart from that they tried hard and the night manager man did give us a liqueur drink and a non alco one for the kids which was a nice gesture tough. Day staff were friendly too
7 - Nighttime, we come on holiday to relax in the day and have a few G&Ts in the night, while enjoying the acts, we were amazed to discover that this year we were told that some nights the entertainment would be inside (In Aug when it is 90 f degrees!!!) First we were told the spanish dancers would be inside but after a number of diners complained they moved it out to the patio in front of the Kasbah, the next night the guitar man was outside but the kareoke was inside which disappointed us as we all sing and the kids were really looking forward to it. When questioned about it the barmaid just shrugged her shoulders and said speak to reception.

We do enjoy Benalmadena as a resort but in the evening we like to stay on the safety of the resort and use the facilities, we will not be coming back to Sahara again which is a shame as it is a good resort, If you like rules and regulations this is the place to go !!!!!

We’re really sorry to read that you experienced some disappointment during your stay at the Sahara Sunset Club.

We would advise that this resort is very popular with families, especially during the summer holiday period, and we’re sorry for any disruption caused to you by our animation team or by other guests at the resort. We must advise that your comments came as a surprise to us, as we haven’t received any other complaints about the Diamond Resorts Games which are being run this summer.

We’re sorry to read of your dissatisfaction with the evening entertainment offered at the Sahara Sunset Club. The resort committee has taken the decision to offer outdoor entertainment on three nights a week during the summer to allow guests some peace and quiet on the other nights. We apologise if this wasn’t explained to you by the resort staff, and for any frustration caused to you by this.

We really regret that you didn’t have a more enjoyable stay on this occasion. We hope that you’ll decide to return here in the future, however, and we look forward to being of service to you again.
