returned last Friday from a two week holiday to find the hotel fully refurbished - wow what can I say. We have previously visited this hotel on a few occasions. It is now very contemporary throughout. The reception is very bright and could do with a few more seating areas, especially on departure days but otherwise is very welcoming. The main lounge I thought was really good, with comfortable seats, nice flooring and good lighting. The quiet lounge is very unusual to say the least being a combination of red, greens and a funny yellow colour. Upholstered stools and upholstered what I think were supposed to be tables. Not my cup of tea but could well be someone's but the quality is excellent. The restaurant in my opinion is much improved. Much comfier seats and again very contemporary. The staff work very hard in keeping the tables cleared and the food replenished. I can't understand why anyone would say the food is bad and there is no choice. There is something for everyone from soups, freshly grilled meats or carvery, fish, curries, casseroles, salads, cold meats, cheeses, jacket potatoes, hot vegetables and many many more dishes and of course there are always chips! I did see a good choice of desserts and ice creams but can't comment as I didn't really try any sweet stuff. In the main the food is hot and well cooked. The bedrooms are lovely with most having had the bath tubs removed and replaced by walk in showers which are fantastic. The beds are lovely with good quality bedding. There is a flat screen TV in the rooms but did hear some moans about ITV not being available. Hopefully for future guests this will be sorted out. Didn't really watch much telly so can't comment on the choice of channels. The pool area has changed slightly and there are new sunbeds which not having mattresses are much more hygienic. The terrace in front of the lounge has gorgeous Bali sofas with loads and loads of cushions on them. Now the downside for me. This was the entertainment. This has been taken over completely by Thomson. There is a resident duo who whilst are good musicians are not very good vocalists. Very loud and droning. Also the repetoire seems very limited. There are two "hostesses" who to put it bluntly need to liven their act up. They are lovely girls but need some guidance. One of the girls wanders round without shoes and constantly is pulling down her dress at the back it is so short and tight. I have been on many Thomson cruises and the entertainment is no comparison whatsoever. It lacks professionalism. There are few guest acts each week - some good some bad. To me there is no encouragement to stay in and spend money in the bar. The management are obviously concerned about this and maybe some improvements will be made. The staff throughout the hotel are efficience and friendly. Despite my moans about the entertainment we had a lovely holiday and will of course return to this lovely hotel but probably won't stay in the lounge in the evenings unless things have improved.
