“Where is everybody?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2014

We arrived at the Athena Palace in the middle of the afternoon to find the hotel locked. (Check in is advertised from 12pm to 10pm).
The doorbell brought a woman who seemed reluctant to admit us but she showed us to a room and left us with no information on mealtimes, hotel facilities or local amenities. As Alpirsbach is a very pretty town in the Black Forest, this seemed remiss.
Come the evening and we went downstairs to be met by Lavendris, the young front-of-house manager. Lavendris was a breath of fresh air, his English was astounding, his local knowledge encyclopaedic and his concern for his guests, total. Lavendris is a star and we are at a loss to understand how the hotel survives when he is off duty.
The family who own the hotel are Greek and the food is Greek. This is fine but they obviously prefer not to associate with the guests, whereas Lavendris, also Greek, seems to speak every known language and communicates readily with everybody. He is very professional and a total asset to this establishment.
The rooms are pleasant, the food is good (if you like Greek) and the prices are reasonable. The Athena Palace is very conveniently sited in the middle of the town and is in the beautiful Kinzig valley. It badly needs a stock of local information from the tourist office to give guests.
Thank you Lavendris for being such a great guy.

Room Tip: Room 20 is one to go for

a familiar hotel which is a perfect starting point for the excursions in the blackforest.
We stopped here for just a night and our experience was flawless.
The room was spacious, clean and comfortable.
We also enjoyed a great greek dinner in the hotel restaurant.
A big plus is the staff, very kind and helpful.

Room Tip: the local railway might be noisy - chose a room far away if possible

Upon arriving to the hotel Athena palace, we were greeted by one of the employees who was pretty friendly. We got there around 1pm on a Saturday, had lunch, which was pretty good. We went out venturing around Freudenstaht that day, and came back around dinner time. We came downstairs, we were traveling with another family of 4, to have a few drinks before bed. The somewhat friendly waiter from the afternoon, was no longer so friendly. He was very rude, rolling his eyes at us once because the ice we asked for was sitting in the plastic that we had to tear each cube out of on the table. I went to get a cup to put it in, while I was gone, he took it. We ordered our 2nd round of beers, and he brought them and sat them at the opposite end of the table, not handing them to us, and walked away. We WILL NOT stay here again. Customer service goes a LONG way in my opinion, which he was severely lacking.

Room Tip: We traveled with myself, my husband, and our 2 small children and stayed in the triple room. It was...

We stayed on December on this hotel.
The owner is a greek who does not speak English, but one of the waiters is also greek and he does speak.
The rooms are quite ok and clean. The breakfast is a buffet.
We payed a reasonable price for the room.

There are 4 parking places outside the hotel, but you need to tell them you would like to use one. Its free.

Wifi is free, but not all the rooms have signal.

The restaurant was quite fine and at reasonable price. The food is of course greek. Some of the items are actually not very greek, but others are quite fine: grilled peppers filled, fried zucchini. Greek salad is not greek, nor dolmades.
The waiter was quite kind with us and invited us to huso during the dinner.

Location is good for tourism: just opposite is both the beer manufactury and the abady.
The place is recommendable both to sleep and eat.
