“Great location, poor service, some areas showing their age”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013

My second stay at this extremely well located and appointed accommodation. Sadly a few points still let this hotel down, which could so easily be addressed:

1) The "welcome" on arrival was just dreadful. I've just driven halfway across Europe to come to your hotel and I do not want to be told that my room might not be ready until 10PM - how ridiculous is that when I am PAYING for it? Oh and by the way if you do tell me that please have the decency to apologize profusely not just shrug.

2) The pool is a wonderful area but is sadly used as an unmonitored creche by many families after skiing - it is always full of children running around, jumping, screaming, splashing, fighting, leaving sauna's open and steam rooms open. Please introduce an adults only time - just 6.30-8.00 PM would be absolutely fine and allow us to unwind in peace.

3) Boot rooms in Basil are absolutely disgusting- dirty, water all over and mouldy walls. Yes I understand that they're never going to be beautiful but it wouldn't take much to sort this out.

4) The fact that a lot of the apartments are only accessible from the main hotel by a single, crowded, in demand lift and then by walking up quite a few stairs before taking another single lift should be noted - nothing they can do about this but it does make moving in/out extraordinarily difficult at times.

I think I will pick somewhere else next time

listen CAREFULLY at checkin when they explain you the way to your apt!!! and this is not a joke!! this place has 4 or 5 different chalets, all on different confusing levels: our apt was on the 2nd floor, although we had to push nbr 4 in the elevator. the slopes were on level -2..?!?...etc
...but once you memorize the way to your apt, to the slopes and to the swimming pool, you will see the nice things about the place.
the location is amazing, ski in and out literally! you are in paradiski: the name says it all.
you park your car and you will not need it for the rest of your stay!
the apt was actually meant for 4-6 persons, we were 2 adults and 2 kids and it was ok for us. nice, warm and clean. although an ecological catastrophy as the heating in all the chalets are electrical!!
the internet was not working all the time.
1 toilet paper roll, that's it.
the pool area is nice for the kids (quite noisy if you aren't used to screaming children)
sauna hamman were appreciated after those long days of sport. they only have 4 lockers!
the receptionist was really nice and helpful.
i would recommend it and actually could go back

Room Tip: 1 room was really nice in chalet celestine level -2, as it has access from the balcony to the slope.

Let's start with the good. The apartment. As long as you don't really try squeezing 6 people into what CGH claims to be a property for 3-6 people, you're fine. For 3 adults the apartment is very comfortable. For a family of 4 the apartment is very decent. For 2 couples... ahem... Let's say reasonable, especially if one of the couples is from the SnowWhite and friends clan. More than that... forget it. As always, the apartment is modern, a very functional kitchen, and indeed a place one looks forward to coming back to after a day of skiing. The residence offers more than decent ski-in/ski-out location. There is also a nice spa, even though somebody should explain to CGH that the water in a jakuzi should be hot, very hot in fact, and not kind-of-warm.
Then there are the other things. I will not go over all the things which I've already stated in previous reviews about CGH locations; Nothing has changed for the better, I'm sorry to say. Still the one bar-of-soap-one-roll-of-toilet-paper for the entire week (imagine that... for 6 people!!!! and this without even getting into the as-old-as-life-itself argument over whether one toilet bowl is enough for 6 people for one week); still the impotence of the lukewarm-at-best staff at the reception. Still the inventory drill and the room-checking upon checkout... Nothing changed.
Some might ask why I continue to go back there then... Well... the sad thing is that not too many, if at all, properties come close at this price-point and the apartment itself, as I said... is great.
So now to the specific things which annoyed me this time.
a. The architecture of the residence. Lets put it this way. In different times and different cultures I would not not be surprised to see the architect of the residence face a firing squad. A routine "journey" from the reception to our flat involved going thru the parking garage, taking 3 (no typo - THREE) different elevators, and about 50 feet outdoors. About a 5 minute affair, in slow traffic time. In pre-ski and post-ski hours, not to mention the check-in check-out slots, this could easily take 10-15 minutes; A true nightmare. Every trip, even to throw away the trash had to be carefully planned in order to optimize this wretched journey. And going to the pool and spa also involves having to walk outside for about 50 feet and again at least 3 elevators.
b. the wifi. for starters none of my Apple devices could hook up to the wifi. I was told by the manager that they know that their wifi is "not compatible" with Apple devices… wait… what? Come again, please. You are saying that you are perfectly aware that you wifi will not work with around 50% of the devices which will try to hook up to it and are just shrugging your shoulders?
Then one of the days, the Internet did not work at all. In the CGH tradition the staff first lies thru its teeth telling the residents that the Internet is down in all of La-Plagne. Wow. It's like that South Park episode… we started planning a trip to "Californie" where it was rumored that the Internet is still alive. Only after I personally tested 4 bars in the nearby vicinity and confronted them with the fact that the Internet is alive and kicking all over the resort, that the staff admitted that perhaps the problem is with their provider… whatever… 24 hours and the issue was still not resolved. At least to the manager's credit we went through an exhaustive philosophical debate on why a free service is part of the rate of a hotel, and consequently thru an exercise of figuring out what percentage of the daily rate should be attributed to the wifi services, I was reimbursed…
c. Kitchen utensils and other things… Turns out that despite the strict inventory counting drills, the residents before us must have sneaked out of the property will all 6 coffee mugs. And the staff was in such a state of shock that it took them more than 48 hours to recover and to get us 6 other mugs. 48 wonderful hours which were spent in drinking coffee the French way, i.e. from soup bowls.
d. Towels - going to the pool requires a towel. The charge for a towel rental is 5 Euros. OTOH I saw at least 5 different residents coming to the lobby during inventory count day and saying that there were not enough towels in the room to which the staff dutifully responded by handing out towels as if there is no tomorrow. So what are we expected to do? How do things work? Are enough towels put in the room or not? Are towels a precious commodity that cost 5 Euros/per? Or are they something that is handed out just like that? go figure.
e. parking - turns out that the parking space which was assigned to me was taken up by someone else. Rather than finding the culprit and telling him/her to get his/her car out of my space, I was assigned another space, which under the architecture constraint mentioned above made my life even more miserable, as it required another flight of stairs to get to the car. Not to mention that the floor of my new parking space was totally dark, without any lighting, something which was not handled for the entire week despite my requests.
f. the staff - despite the fact that this is not new, I still do not feel that the CGH staff understands what staffing a 4-star residence means. The availability is scarce, e.g. after 8pm… forget it… Internet up or down… coffee mugs at one's disposal or not. After 8pm there is nobody to talk to… and perhaps just for the best… even when they are there the staff is impolite, aloof, and most importantly without any authority… everythings is "up to the Directeur". I guess we were fortunate enough to have a decent one, at that.

Will I go back to a CGH residence? - unfortunately… probably. The prices of who I found to be the only competition in this space - the Montagnette resorts - have climbed steeply over the last year, and as mentioned nobody is looking into occupying this huge vacuum of decent apartments with decent service space.
Will I go back to CGH in La Plagne? Never ever.

Room Tip: make sure you understand the architecture (or lack of thereof) of the residence and demand an apartm...

Thank you for this view and for your frank comments.
Please know that we are really sorry that your stay at Les Granges du Soleil wasn’t what you were expected.
They are very valuable and we urge us to always listen to our customers.
Regarding the wifi improvements have been made for your comfort.
It is true that our residence is ski feet against the configuration of our chalets requires to borrow stairs and lift order to regain apartments or pool.
The advantage of this architecture is that it provides to be quiet no noise from neighbors.
Your comments asking us lots of vigilance, we'd love to have the chance to welcome you again to make you love this beautiful place.
Sincerely yours,

Came here when it first opened hence returning again, this time staff were rude, a complete maze to get to appartment, appartment dirty, smell of smoke and weed from another appartment constantly coming in from the bathroom.
Our car was blocked in by another and reception said nothing they could do as they had no record of car reg plates to appartments, bloody stupid, after returning to reception to insist someone finds out who's car it was they actually did something, the chap who's car it was told us that reception told him to block us in and they would tell us when we required it to be moved, as he said one hand doesn't know what the other is doing.. All in all they need to get someone to manage this place better, and get organised..their attitudes are terrible.
All other reviews which are positive will be down to luck ! On the position of their appartment and how they were treated by the staff if they had any issues, if u are lucky enough then yes you would enjoy it.. But this time we did not, luck was not on our side and luck at £3k plus which is what a holiday for 4 is just not acceptable.

Positives - location, apartment facilities, resort skiing, resort facilities (as long as you are not looking for a wild night life). Thank god we were given an apartment for 6 (2 adults, 2 teenagers) otherwise we would have been very tight on space. The bedrooms were lovely and cosy with comfortable super king bed in the ensuite master bedroom. The twin had a separate toilet and bathroom. The kitchen area was well equipped. If you are British, bring a portable DVD player with adaptor leads to fit into the TV as English stations are almost non existent. This works v well and keeps the family happy if you want a relaxing night in. It IS ski in and ski out BUT no one tells you how to get down to the back door via 2 lifts without clambering down icy steps with skis. Once you work it out, it's easy, although the complicated lifts and access from reception to your accommodation can be bewildering especially when you arrive with all your bags. However that's an irritation that's offset by a quiet nights sleep as you look out onto the slopes and no noisy traffic or drunken partygoers. Shops in Plagne Soleil - minimal but a decent Spar Supermarket - expensive though. We took a few tins and cooking basics - what saddos but felt smug that we did! Some nice restaurants though and if you can be bothered to get the shuttle bus at night you can head out to Plagne Centre or the other villages.
Negatives: It did seem weird that the Reception wasnt open between 1-4 and closed again at 8pm. The code to the swimming pool door malfunctioned and we couldn't get in until Reception opened again at 4pm. We were running around the buildings and smelly carpark and corridors trying to find a way in as Reception had switched off the direct access lifts until they reopened.

However the Reception staff were very kind - we lost one of our room keys on the first day - BEWARE - you only have 2 keys and if you lose one it costs about 100 euros penalty! Fortunately someone found it after a day but we were struggling to deal with different ski arrangements and arrivals back to the apartment or boot locker with only one key. You couldn't leave that key at Reception as Reception closed when you needed it. Had we lost the 2nd key we would have been locked out for the night so we lived in fear whilst we were one key down.

The free Internet is a very nice facility - it doesn't always work and some say it won't work with iPads but we did get the hang of it once someone explained that once you had clicked on the link in SETTINGS, you then had to go to SAFARI to type in your user name and password. Again that took a couple of days to find out. You have to ask lots of people that you meet in the hotel to help you resolve these issues at its not always obvious.

Skiing - just awesome. You have to get a bit of a pace going on the last run if you want to come into your own back door rather than ending up down the hill near the Reception end but there is a handy little button lift - the Colossus - at Plagne Bellecote that brings you to the top end of the hotel if this is where your apartment is. In some parts of La Plagne eg Plagne Centre, you MAY end up poling it a bit between sections but intermediate skiers can get across to all the runs if you get a good pace going and look for the best route. There is a huge amount of skiing also in Les Arcs with a very fast cable car over, but some great variety also in La Plagne areas if you take the time to explore. We have been to resorts all over Europe and this one is up there for the skiing and much prettier than expected. I don't think it's the sort of place for wild boozy nights though! Too spread out. Been there and done that. Here for skiing and comfort and that's what you get in the main.

I think Steve R must have been somewhere else...
Just back from my 4th to La Plagne in 3 years. This accommodation offers superb ski in ski out at the top of Plagne Soleil. The apartment (a7) was clean well appointed and going out the door (on lift level -2) you are jaut above to terrace bar and straight on to my skis.
No issues at all swimming in shorts in fact the staff wee fantastic. I suggested they should have a bar in reception so you could enjoy a drink in front of the warming open wood fire before heading out.
There was a bit of smell in th e general corridors which as more from damp carpets etc due to people coming in with snow on their boots/skis. I have experienced this in other places and on our first night 13th) the carpets were being steam cleaned leaving a lovely lemon smell.
It was a little warm and dry as is to be expected at over 2000m. And at -19 it was better than being cold. Just run a steaming hot bath and leave the water in over night to increase humidity.
2 important questions -
Would I recommend this to a friend?.. YES
Would I return?.. YES - already pricing for next year.

Brilliant - thank you for a grat family holiday.

Room Tip: A7 was good for us - but request a ground level over looking slopes if you want to ski to you balcon...

First impressions were excellent - how wrong we were!
Modern purpose built apartment complex in Plagne Soleil.
Arrived early on the saturday lunchtime & as advertised had to wait until 5pm to check in. However on entering our apartment at 5.15pm the place had not been cleaned & we then had to wait until gone 7pm for it to be cleaned. Not ideal after a 10 hour drive! We stayed in apartment A2 - a very pleasant & well appointed 2 bedroom apartment but with the most dreadful stench of raw sewage. In fact the whole chalet stunk from the day we arrived to the day we left. We complained to Reception but was just met with "we know" and not even an apology!
We were refused use of the spa/pool/sauna area as we did not have Speedo type briefs with us - only swimming shorts.
The complex advertises itself as ski in ski out - this could not be further from the truth.
Plagne Soleil is a lovely resort but this property & more so it's staff fell way short of what was expected. We have enjoyed over a dozen ski trips to France but have never experienced such a poorly managed accomodation with such uncaring & rude staff. Avoid!!
