“Easy, breezy beautiful...Grotto Bay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013

We chose Grotto Bay Resort because it was one of the few resorts (if only) beach resort that provided an all inclusive option. It was thee best decision!!! All meals are included...which were satisfying and had plenty of options for picky palettes and those with dietary restriction. Alcohol also, excluding premium brands, but they had several "specialty" drinks that were excellent. My favs were the Cymone Surprise and the Island favorite..."The Swizzle". We took full advantage of the non-motorized water sports that are a part of the inclusive package i.e kayaks, paddleboards. We also went down the slide a few times, which is not included but no one is standing guard in the water ;-) It's a very easy resort. The beach is small but quaint. The beach attendant granted your ever wish...setting up your beach chairs, umbrellas (no charge) and he even had sunscreen! It's a small island, so you can always visit the many beautiful beaches the island offers. Yet another reason to get the all-inclusive! Bus and ferry passes are included. My honey and I would go to breakfast and hit the streets. One day we took the bus to Hamilton for shopping...the ferry to the Dockyard for sightseeing then to St. Georges to hit the beach then caught the bus back to the hotel in time for lunch and dinner. Yes, all in one day! We also hit a local spot "Gombay" on our last night...had a cool time chatting it up with the owner! It was easy and safe. Should you get a little mixed up...the bus drivers and/or residents do not hesistate to help you. Most of the staff are attentive and friendly and go out of their way to accomodate you. Victor managed the restaurant with five star class and Veronica met us each morning with a warm smile! The DJ and host at Karaoke night made it entertaining for all. Rooms are well maintained and had recent renovations. WARNING: For seniors, those with physical limitations or lazy folks: The buildings are situated on a hillside so there are plenty of steps you would need to take leading to the pool, beach and to the hotel lobby. Could be a blessing or a curse. Helped us work off those drinks and meals. Also important to note is that you have to pay a high price for wifi...$6/hour or there are other plans based on your need. However, there are free wifi spots in downtown Hamilton. We stopped at a diner in Hamilton, bought a ginger beer and were able to use the wifi to call home and check email. The piece de resistance of Grotto Bay Beach Resort are the Crystal Caves. Phenomenal!!!! They are at the resort...free of charge. Walk out of your room and take a refreshing dip in the cool waters of the cave. It's like nothing you've ever experienced and probably won't any where else on the island. All in all...a fantastical tropical treat to our senses. We will be returning with kids in tow next time.

Room Tip: Choose the all-inclusive!!!! Steps could be problem for some.

We spent Christmas here in 2012, and had a very memorable trip.
The staff treated everyone like family, and even had presents for the kids on Christmas day.

The water was cold, but I'm from Toronto so I braved the temperatures and snorkelled out to the sunken ship, which along with the cave are very cool features to have on site.

Overall it was pretty quiet, the pool bar was closed and there wasn't a whole lot of hustle and bustle you get with bigger resorts, but that's what made things all the more enjoyable.

The all inclusive option ended up being the best choice, as meals in Bermuda can get pricey. But the food is quality and we had no complaints.

If you do end up going to Bermuda in the winter, visit the pink sand beaches on the south shore. The water is much warmer down there, and there are a lot of giant rocks to explore.

Great hotel, great staff, great location!
We spent 10 nights here and cannot find any faults with this hotel.
We have an 11 and 8 year old and this hotel has a great family feel to it.
We were on the all inclusive package which works out better as the food and drinks can be quite pricey. The food is delicious in all the restaurants and hard to believe its included on the ai package!
Victor, Veronica, christian, James and Ben were absolute stars and really looked after us and made our stay extra special.
We loved swimming in the cave and feeding the fish, such amazing experiences.

This is our 4th time to Bermuda and first time at this hotel, we will definetly be returning.
Beautiful hotel with beautiful people working there.

Room Tip: We had a fab room with great view 620

Being close to the airport is very convenient and you really do not notice the planes and its only 5 minute taxi ride. We checked in at 3pm and our room was ready. Front desk was very helpful and friendly. Room had a very nice view of the bay/ ocean and it looked like most rooms had a view of the water. Some of the buildings are far from the pool and water but our room 524 was centralized to all areas of the resort. The resort sits on top of a hill so you will need to walk up and down about 50 steps to the pool & beach (some people had problems with this walk).

We booked the all inclusive for 6 days and it was well worth the money as the food and service was very good (not 5 star but 4 star). We only ate off the resort one day for lunch which cost $105 for 4 no drinks. Food in Bermuda is very expensive so unless you need to eat at different location every day go with the all inclusive. Breakfast buffet was great, lunch menu small but still very good and both dinner restaurants very good.

One big complaint about the all inclusive, they advertise all non-alcoholic drinks are included but this is not true, non-alcoholic frozen drinks are not included (teenagers very disappointed). One other complaint the bar at the pool closes at 5 or 6pm. Should be opened until 9 or 10pm.

Rooms are average size and the bathroom is small. The shower is weird with no shower curtain or shower doors - had one piece of glass that did not slide. This meant the floor was wet after every shower. Had some issues with the TV (plus side teenage son could not watch TV all day).

Family loved St Catherine beach and the old Fort (wear you swim suits & bring change of clothes). You will need to walk about 1 mile to the beach but NO crowds - only 7 other local people on the beach and they were very friendly! Eat at the restaurant at the beach & change. We also went to clear water / turtle bay beach (make sure you get on the right bus). This is also a local beach and we had one section of the beach all to our self (walk past the gate into cooper nature reserve).

Overall great vacation.

Room Tip: Lower numbered rooms closer to pool & water. We stayed in room 524 which was centrally located...

Overall, Grotto Bay Beach Resort was very nice. It is one of the few resorts in Bermuda that has a private beach - it is pretty small but there are plenty of loungers and never had a problem finding a spot. The swimming pool is fairly small - has a shallow end and a deep end. Shallow end is filled with little kids and their parents; deep end filled with slightly older kids running and jumping in the pool. If you're a couple looking for a romantic getaway this is not the place for you as it is filled with kids. We did not do the all inclusive option because we wanted to explore the island a bit and get a feel for the culture. The resort is 5 minutes from the airport which is very convenient; there are only 12 flights in and out of Bermuda per day so we did not find it to be a disturbance while relaxing on the beach. Very safe and easy to get around by bus.

PROS:
short trip to/from airport
bus stop right outside resort
private beach

Only complaint was that we arrived early around 11am and our room was not ready until 3pm. You WILL NOT get in your room before 3pm...somehow all of a sudden at 3pm the rooms all become ready. We checked back every hour to check in early but was not happening. At 3pm we checked in they gave us our room key, went to our room and they were just beginning to clean our room...very annoying after waiting 4 hours to get in our room to find them cleaning it and we were not allowed in. Complained to front desk and they gave us a credit for our lunch that we ate that day which made up for it.

In the end, I would go back to this resort with kids in the future.

My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon trip. I tried to notify the office that we would be there for our honeymoon via email, but never received a response. We were hoping if we paid a little extra we could be given your typical honeymoon welcome in our room. But, no. I didn't even see a honeymoon suite offered.

The employees are nice, but when it comes to their restaurant/bar don't be expected to be waited on hastily like we are accustomed to in the states, especially with the hospitality of the south. It's nothing against them, but they move at their own pace and have a very chill attitude. That's just the way they are.

I had a very hard time getting and keeping wifi service there. It bothered me to the point I was in tears.

If you plan to do any adventuring of the island this hotel is far away from Hamilton and where a lot of things happen. So, prepare to take lots of cash for transportation and leave an open schedule to wait for busses.

The food was always good, both next to the beach and at the resort restaurant. The rooms and hotel were always clean. Our couples massage in the cave was AMAZING! The beach was cute and it has a water activity place next to it so you can rent kayaks and the like. But, since its in a bay, there aren't any big waves like there are along the beaches. A small thing we did enjoy were the friendly cats that call that place home, and we named each one of them. Also, be prepared to be awoken by roosters crowing about 5:00 something in the morning. I didn't find it irritating, I thought it was nice actually. Also, the fella that walks around in Bermuda shorts greeting the guests was a very friendly touch.

If you get tired of the hotel food there is a store and restaurant within walking distance.

Overall, it's a 3/5 for me. Next time we're going to find a place closer to Hamilton or on the opposite side of the island as we never got to venture that side.

We have been recommended to stay at this hotel by our travel agent. We were 2 families and took the all inclusive package for 3 nights. The resort is rated as 3 stars. I would say it is very good for this rating, it could be 4 stars.
PROs:
- Nice and cozy resort
- Nice sandy Beach that is very close to the rooms
- The food in most of the outlets is very good (considering this is a 3 1/2 stars)
- Grotto; you MUST swim in it, it is probably the best thing you will do there
- Sports activities are good
- Kids activities personnel are extremely friendly and sweet!

Cons:
- The sound of the Fridge in the room is so annoying i could not sleep until i had to switch it off!
- Being All inclusive, we expected to have, at least, water bottles in the rooms! we had to get them ourselves from the bar or restaurant (a bit awkward feeling!)
- information provided to us about transportation was incomplete and we did not get our 'transportation passes'! make sure to request these and insist on getting them from the front desk.

As for the service, we have been faced with (1) extremely friendly ones; and (2) extremely un friendly staff!!

Overall it was good experience, don't expect a 5 star one though!
