“The Colonsay Hotel - gentle luxury on an island paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

Irina and her staff were lovely, as usual, in this charming and well-appointed small hotel. Was there for the Annual Colonsay Rugby 10s festival, itself an event that is growing in stature and is quickly become the social event of the Summer. This hotel, restaurant and bar is the centre of the Colonsay social life.

I have just celebrated my 60th birthday on Colonsay with 13 friends and family members and we took over the hotel for the weekend. Nothing was too much trouble for Irina, for example she managed to find 13 pairs of wellies to fit our our group so we could walk to Oransay. Our room was extremely comfortable and most of our party felt the same. The bar area and the sitting room very pleasant, although I do think the smell of disinfectant does overwhelm the public spaces somewhat. Some of the food was excellent- the soups, smoked mackerel pate and garden salads really delicious.
We all had a really good time with lots of fun and the hotel was the ideal spot for such a relaxed gathering. Thank you Irina.

There is no other hotel on Colonsay so this is not about choice! It is nice enough, painted wooden floors, shaker style bar and dining room, very welcoming and friendly staff. But something is not quite right. There is a pervasive smell of detergent and bleach. The cooking is hit and miss, sometimes excellent and sometimes really awful. The rooms are small and the en suite (certainly in our room) really primitive - even close to non-functional. Good wine list, nice local beers, prices not too bad. So what is it? I think it's the fact that this wild and bleak and barren island needs its only hotel to be more welcoming and comfortable, more cosy and sheltering, where the hedonism can shine through after a hard day following the only possible island pursuits - all of which involved lots of (usually cold) fresh air and hearty exercise. Non-outward bound people should probably avoid.

We had some lovely smoked mackeral pate but very surprised a good portion was accompanied by two small fingers of toast. Had to suck the pate off and eat tiny pieces of toast
Husband could not believe the price of the Colonsay bottles of beer sold at the brewery in the village for £2.85 ans resold for £4.50-ouch
Garden was very pleasant but did not go into main hotel so cannot comment

I stayed at The Colonsay at the start of May and nothing was too much trouble. I had phoned ahead asking if I could hire a bike - of course was the answer - it was awaiting my arrival - supplied by Archie's Bike Hire. So after walking from the 6pm Ferry from Oban, on a wonderfully sunny evening, I cycled to the beach along deserted roads and saw the Atlantic breakers. What a start to an all too brief, pleasurable stay at a wonderful hotel - not cheap but the best rarely is! It was my first visit but I can't wait for my next visit and I can see why people come year after year!

Got a last minute booking over the Bank Holiday Weekend. Colonsay has a unique atmosphere and is perfect for walking and biking and has an amazing variety of flora and fauna. It is almost totally unspoiled and is litter free. This was our third trip to Colonsay, but our first staying in the hotel. We received a warm welcome and excellent service throughout our stay. The room was on the small side (it is one of their cheapest rooms) but was well decorated and spotlessly clean with particularly good quality linen and towels. Continental breakfast is included and is more than adequate. We had dinner on both nights and the food was fantastic: scallops, salmon, crab claws and fish cakes are all highly recommended. Delicious wine at reasonable prices. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Every request was met with a smile. We are already planning our next visit, but will think about going for a bigger room.

Visited 24 to 27 April, traveled by train and ferry from Oban. Got about Colonsay on my Mountain bike. Hotel is in a lovely location and staff are welcoming and helpful. The magic atmosphere got all guests together round the wood stove and convivial evenings were had. Food plentiful and satisfying. despite cycling hours and hours , managed to gain 4 lbs.

The weather was kind and colourful showing off the beaches at their best. Almost needed to put on sun protection. I would love to return.

Room Tip: Askernish is spacious with a super on suite and TV.
