I stayed at the Plaza Hotel in Voula from July 10th-13th with my friend and our three 18yr old daughters. (2 hers, 1 mine)
I was sharing with the other mum and we had booked a twin room which turned out to be a double bed and a small put-up bed. We asked for the twin we had booked but apparently another guest had overstayed their booking and the hotel didn't feel they could throw them out. So we made do.
The room was clean. The air-conditioning worked. We had a little balcony. The shower was powerful and the toilet flushed. All good. The hotel is on a busy road which disturbed me a bit the first night, but I soon got used to it.
The triple room we had booked for the girls turned out to be a twin room with an extra put-up bed wheeled in. However the girls were fine. One of them found the road too noisy and their toilet made odd noises when the cistern refilled but they were generally happy. They also had a balcony.
Breakfast was included in the, very reasonable, price. It consisted of cold orange drink (not real juice, sadly), various breads, ham, cheese, hard-boiled eggs and cake, with tea or coffee. One day we had watermelon too which was nice.
Some of the staff were Polish. The owner was half English, half Greek. His wife was Russian or Ukranian. All were very friendly and helpful.
During our stay we caught buses from right outside the hotel into Athens, to Varkisa, Sounio and to Pireas. It was very easy and cheap. We saw all the sites and visited all the museums. (Except the Pireas Museum which is closed for refurbishment, we discovered.) Tickets can be purchased from the kiosk outside.
We swam in the sea which is right across the road from the hotel. The public (free) beach is just left of the hotel. We also found a great taverna on the same side of the road as the hotel, serving alll sorts of Greek food and beer for hardly any money.
All in all, 4 days of great fun.
I'd recommend the hotel and the buses and the taverna to anyone who wants to visit Athens on a budget.
