The short review: For the price - a decent value, just outside Athens on the tram line. If the option of a 3.5 rating was available, that is most appropriate. I still gave it a 4 due to the quality of the staff.
The extent of our stay: A week+. Both with a group, and for a few days on our own. We had a chance to experience most of what the hotel & staff can do.
Location: ~7 miles from Athens center city. A very convenient tram ride in 35 - 50 min. Super simple. Also about 1 mile from Glyfada (small resort town). Walk there via the beach path, or take the tram. Restaurants in Glyfada often cater to tourists. However there are some good choices.
Fenix overview: VERY good staff. Multi-lingual. Genuinely helpful and friendly. Athens service can be a bit difficult, but this group (including the maid staff) is very good. We spoke to the manager and complimented him, specifically on the staff. Nice guy. Even offered to buy us a drink. The hotel location is good if you want to be removed from the hassle of Athens and the commercialism of Glyfada. It is not a five star spa, with a destination restaurant and a sugar sand beach. Not at under 100 euros per night.
Rooms: Decent / workable. If you're looking for the top-level accommodations, you need to pay a lot more. This is serviceable, not Hotel Bretagne.
Baths: A bit variable. Ours was fine. Some others had tiny showers.
Beds: Firm is an understatement.
Common areas: Quite good.
Breakfast: Considering that it is included with the room - quite good. Not gourmet. Good+
The Bar: Decent for drinks etc.
The Restaurant (same as the bar): If you are really hungry. The hotel caters to a lot of tourist groups and budget business people. It's basic fare. Not a great value.
The pool: Small but fine. Could be decent for a dip. The surrounding area is nice. However it appears NOT to be a focus, either for the management or the guests.
WiFi: Free, but often slow. Serviceable most times for basics.
Physical plant / AC etc.: Plumbing works. AC - not so much. This is a problem.
Other info: The main road (Poseidonos) is loud. Idiots blasting along on loud motorcycles can be annoying. If you're used to city noise in NYC or London or Paris etc., it's not such a big deal. If not, bring some earplugs. Then it's all fine.
Note: MOST of the other hotels on this side of town are immediately along the very busy main road. The noise problem is FAR from specific to Fenix.
Suggestions for the hotel owners: Look - your staff is doing a very nice job. Stop making things tough for them. Put some money in the AC. Clean up the pool. You might even sell some drinks out there! Spruce up the (few) badly worn bits of the rooms. And for god's sake, buy some mega-boxes of earplugs for the staff to hand out to guests who are light sleepers. Cheap. Would go a long way in good will.
With a few tweaks and a little attention, this could be a very good value. As it stands, 'decent value' and a thumbs up is appropriate.
I have no ties, financial, personal or otherwise, to this property, its owners or staff.
