“Well, if you want paradise, here it is!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2014

Having read some of the reviews of The Grand Resort Lagonissi on this site I nearly didn't book. Thankfully I have learned to ignore posters who appear to travel the world in 12 star luxury and compare everything to some mythical ideal. I booked a standard room with a sea view as the larger rooms and bungalows were outside my budget.

It was a short 3 day relaxing break added to the end of a business trip to Athens and took 25 minutes by taxi from the centre of the city (set price €40). As you approach the resort you are treated to views of the coast and the brilliant blue sea but nothing prepares you for what is to come!

You enter the self contained resort through a security gate where you experience the first of the truly exceptional customer service. The gatekeeper asks for your name and you pass through to the central reception building where you are met by the manager and staff who make you welcome and explain the geography and facilities. As I was checking in the desk manager told me that I was to receive a 'little upgrade' !

A staff driven buggy took us through beautiful gardens to our room which turned out to be a large suite with high quality furniture and every luxury that I could think of.....lovely soft king sized electric bed, armchairs, tables, mini bar, huge TV, six wardrobes with automatic lighting, large balcony overlooking our private beach with rattan chairs and a coffee table (the views of the sunset over the Aegean Sea were breathtaking!), free fruit and wine, and then we found the bathroom!!!! Jacuzzi, shower/steam room/sauna, twin sinks and 2 TV's..one above the bath and a small one in the toilet! There was even a pro quality treadmill, exercise bench and weights but we didn't have the time or energy to use them.

The decor is high quality, grey slate floors and dark wood furniture with everything working and spotlessly clean. The maids came twice a day and everything was freshened and cleaned.

We ate at several of the resort restaurants, Captain's House, Mediterranean and Polynesian as well as a sumptuous buffet breakfast in the main building. Staff driven buggies drive you everywhere if you don't feel like walking, all you need to do is call reception and they arrive seconds later. The standard of food was high, we particularly enjoyed the sushi at the Polynesian restaurant but they were all good with great service and views.

We spent an idyllic 3 days, swimming in the warm, clear waters and diving around the rocks fascinated by the fish feeding just metres from the private beach. Bedding on the sun loungers was changed every morning and the beach kept clean. We made full use of the umbrella as it was very hot in July!!

Now, let me just make a few things clear to anyone thinking of booking at the Lagonissi. It is not in Central Athens and it doesn't claim to be! It's about 20 miles south of the city. It is set on an exclusive peninsular not in a coastal town, if you want shops and dozens of restaurants selling cheap ouzo and kebabs, it is not for you. It is exclusive and high quality which is reflected in the price.

Obviously, I got a great deal and will have to save up to have the same room when we visit again (and we will!). I payed €400 a night but it was worth every cent. If you want a quiet, luxurious retreat to rest and recharge your batteries, this is the place. Idyllic!

This is a outstanding location. The staff do their utmost to answer your questions. But the management strategy apparently is purely based on savings. Although the bungalow we had was good, the television was most probably is already ten years old and it was impossible to read any text on the screen (e.g. the stock exchange quotations on CNN). The "private" beach in front of the bungalow was not maintained at all. This could be a "five star" infrastructure, but a lot has to be invested to justify the "seven star" prices the hotel applies, as well for the rooms as for the restaurants.

Room Tip: neem nooit een kamer in het hoofdgebouw

I had a bussines booking with two business partner, the rooms are ok, but not according a modern 5 stars standard, and - what is not the fault of the hotel - it is really far away from Athens, so i can not recommend the hotel if you plan to be in Athens.

The Grand Resort Lagonissi benefits from a secluded, exclusive location with easy access to Athens International Airport (taxi drive is about 35 euros). The isolated location also means that you don't have any shops around so if you need a bank, a pharmacy or a supermarket it's not the right place for you. There is a small tobacco shop inside the hotel and another one selling expensive beach outwear. I stayed a few nights in superb deluxe bungalow located in the west area of the resort (if you are interested in admiring the sunsets): the room was huge and very well appointed - huge TV screen, seating area, walk-in closet etc. I also enjoyed a great terrace with comfortable armchairs and amazing sea view. My room was at the first floor, my friend stayed in a ground floor room that had a nice small garden with sun lounges - in such a room you are actually with your feet in the water. On the other hand my room had a fabulous view! The bathroom was the best part: it included a small but well appointed gym, a steam room with shower and a jacuzzi! It was by far the most exquisite bathroom I have seen in any hotel so far. The room looked a bit outdated and not really luxurious but it was comfortable (except for the bed, which was a bit too hard). All bungalows share a private beach with sun lounges and umbrellas, which was almost empty when I visited the hotel in June - a pure delight! There are many restaurants in the resort, I had dinner in three of them - the Italian Captain's House, the Polynesian one and Galazya Akti (Cretan). Also I had breakfast and lunches in Aphrodite restaurant. The food dissapointed me, it was average and I was expecting more in this location. The breakfast and the lunches were actually better than the dinners. However all restaurants have nice views. The service is good but not everywhere...I have seen dirty glasses left outside the room for four days... It's a lovely place to spend a quiet holiday (forget discos and clubs) but I find it overpriced. Luckily I was able to enjoy it as I participated in a conference and benefited from a more affordable corporate rate.

Room Tip: The rooms on the groundfloor are located directly on the beach but those on the first floor have bet...

Thank you for a wonderful stay. We spend 2 unforgettable nights . We had dinner in the Polynesian restaurant as well as in the captain s restaurant. Lunch at the mediteranneo on the beach. The food was great. I found prices too high on Med restaurant since the quality of the food and the service was not as high as it had been in the other 2 restaurants. The maître was speaking too loud all the time giving advices to the waiters and the kitchen. The spa was pleasant but very dark. The massage was great ! The breakfast was also very nice ,big variety and good service. The reservation department was very helpful ,they booked dinner table and spa treatments ,excellent !

Beautiful Suite - sort of a Villa with your own heated pool and a gym. This place is very private and romantic, ideal spot for romantic getaway. The garden did look indeed as it required more attention as well as the sun chairs and sun beds.

It is literally the best hotel in the area of Athens considering that you get a quiet sea view along with privacy and best 5 star services within your bungalow. Of course, sometimes, you have to double check what the room service staff is taking from your table or they may clean up your wine although the bottle is still half full. Or, worse , have them knock your door during your sweet siesta and wake you up to collect the leftovers of your room service order although you never called them to do so. And what if ... instead of sleeping we were in the middle of something else? Anyway, this is only a detail if you are a good fella and you try to keep up with a good mood. Regarding the orders from the Ouzeri menu, here are some don't s and do' s:
Do not order white fish roe salad with botargo from Mesologgi or the
Scantorini split pea spread with caramelized onions , capers and olive oil rusks or even the Grilled Mastello cheese, avocado and fig tartare served with grape syrup. The reason is that the chef probably didn't try himself those dishes which sound really fancy but tasted well beyond average.
Do order the Fresh mussels sautéed in white wine , leeks and saffron, the Damps with olive paste, tomato , sour myzithra cheese, pickled rock samphire and virgin olive oil, the Grilled jumbo shrimp and finally the Lemon cream , mascarpone and white chocolate mousse with fresh strawberries and Madagascar vanilla ice-cream.
Of course you may wanna try the other two restaurants (the Polynesian Kohylia or the Mediterranean Captain's house), which are really superb and have a lot of terrific delicacies.
Overall , the staff is well trained and willing to serve you well. But when you pay over 600 euro a day (at least) you probably expect everything towards "the perfect".

Room Tip: Bungalow with sea front view
