We live in Athens and we like to spend summer weekends in Sounio as it is really close to Athens and there are nice tavernas around. We usually stay at Cape Sounio hotel but this time, as it was a last minute decision, it was fully booked so we decided to try Aegeon.
The hotel is impressively located right on the foot of the Posidon temple, in front of a really nice beach. This, and the fact that almost all rooms have a sea & sunset view are the best parts of the hotel. Almost anything else ranges between average and annoying and it hardly competes as a 4 star hotel.
The building, dating back form the 60s, and is recently renovated.
Rooms are of average size and are decorated in a way which borders between "modern" and tacky. Cheap chinese reproductions everywhere with some personal touches here and there (copper painted wooden night table and shell covered ceiling lamps !) . Nice marble bathroom however but with absolutely no amenities.
The beach is nice. However, it is packed with 4 rows of umbrellas (although it is not that big) and about a trillion people and even more babies. There are babies everywhere, jumping, playing and crying all over. It is then that I realized that this is an open beach and everyone from Athens has access to it. You cannot help but intervene to other people's conversations as you all sweat together under the sun in one huge and loud party.
There is also a basic beach bar serving refreshments, beers and crisps accompanied with hideous "bouzouki" music coming out from a couple of really cheap speakers. At least the girls behind the bar were dancing and singing the lyrics passionately while they were serving the parents and their babies.
Breakfast was rather annoying with nothing but the very basic and of mediocre quality.
Finally, there is no convenience store for newspapers, cigarettes, magazines etc. in the hotel and the nearest one is 5-6 kilometers away.
Overall, I don't think I will ever go back there again, although that I would recommend it to parents.
There is absolutely no comparison to Cape Sounio which is 500 meters away but is double the price.

The hotel is in a wonderful location, with views up to the temple of Poseidon and overlooking the small bay. The beach is not that great, pretty dirty most of the time we were there. Rooms are clean and perfectly adequate. Breakfasts were quantity rather than quality. The two tavernas on the beach serve good food, reasonably priced. On our first night the hotel's bar near the beach was packed until the early hours, on the next day it was shut at seven. Given the rave reviews we were expecting something rather special and the Aegeon is not special in any way that springs to mind. Very handy for the airport, as many other reviewers mention, although its not exactly round the corner.

In Athens for a week, stuck at a hotel near the airport, we reached out to find somewhere.. anywhere on the beach for the remainder of our stay. We literally stumbled onto the Aegeon Beach Hotel in Sounio ! We booked the hotel based on the internet website and pictures only to arrive there and discover that, while beautiful, the pictures failed to do this hotel justice. It so far exceeded our expectations... I can't tell you !! Sitting in a cove, literally in the shadow of The Temple Of Poseidon, the Aegeon Beach Hotel really is a hidden gem. The beach is beautiful, the cove is pristine, the yachts that come into the area and weigh anchor every day are awesome, the staff can't do enough for you.... and they all take their cues from the owner Georgios Terlakis. He is the consumate host. He and his staff MADE our trip to Greece ! We can't wait to go back.

The Aegeon Beach is situated in a truly spectacular and beautiful location (see photo). The Temple of Poseidon ovelooks the temple and is fantastic to look upto during the day while having breakfast or at night from your room balcony when the 450BC temple ruins is lit up (see photo). We stayed for 2 days in the off season in the Junior Suite wiith 2 kids. The suite was spacious with good decor and a fair sized balcony overlooking the Aegean sea. The Hotel staff were helpful and courteous.

The water is shallow for a good distance and safe for kids to play in. Unlike a resort hotel closeby where you have to cross route 91 road to reach the beach, the Aegeon hotel is on the Beach and it is 40 metres walk from your room directly on the beach which is the way it should be. The views from the beach is great with small sail boats moored around. The facilities on the beach provided by the hotel is fairly good and the beach is clean. Next to the hotel on the beach is a shop which hires water sports equipment and make sure you hire the Pedal boat for 8 Euro an hour and go out on to the sea to enjoy the nice views of the neighbouring area. There are two taverns adjoining the hotel and for variety food you can enjoy decent sea food for lunch or dinner there.

You can walk up to the Temple of Poseidon from the hotel beach (slow walk uphill for 20 minutes). Visit the temple an hour before sunset to enjoy the breathtaking sunset from the temple on the hill (see photo). The breakfast is good but was surprised they did not serve orange juice. The nearest shops for any grocery or other items is 10 minutes by car. If you are in Athens it will be worthwhile hiring a car and driving to the hotel in Sunio as the drive for 50kms is along the Aegean sea coast the scenery is really worth it and relaxing driving on the quite route 91.

Negative Points -
The sea view from the Junior Suite balcony was spoilt by a dining extension area metal roofing which is ugly in front of the spectacular view of the sea. We wondered why the beds were not made up properly when they cleaned the room daily. Be careful while having a shower in the bath as the water will spash out on the floor as there is no proper shower glass or curtain - Bad design. No pool is a disadvantage as the sea water is cold outside July-September for long swims.

  • Liked — Nice spacious room with good sea view Balcony with spectacular scenery & locaton
  • Disliked — Hampered view from Balcony, Shower/Bath area
