After reading reviews on this site, I was a bit concerned about staying at the Espléndido. However, considering the choices available in Flores/Santa Elena, I think that Espléndido is probably among the best options available. It's by no means splendid, but it fit the bill. My room was small, but comfortable and clean and the hotel pool provided a nice respite from the heat and humidity. I would stay again, but perhaps haggle a little on the price.
First off, Flores is still a rather dusty frontier town with most accommodations geared more to the backpacking set than to more seasoned travelers. Flores itself is tiny and charming, but a bit rough around the edges. Espléndido is a nice facility that mimics some of the better elements of a four star hotel, but struck me a more of a very nice two or perhaps three star kind of place.
Rooms are clean and comfortable with great AC.
Pool is clean and refreshing.
Waterside restaurant has nice views of Flores.
Staff was friendly and helpful.
Could be Better:
Rooms are smallish, 80s decor.
Food at restaurant was pricey for Guatemala.
Lake Itza is kind of stinky.
Flores has yet to develop truly world class tourist facilities, so keep in mind your choices for accommodation are limited. You won’t find the range of hotels here that you would at say, Angkor Wat or Chichen Itza, but embracing the town for what it is will allow you to appreciate it’s sleepy, frontier character that I’m sure will soon be pushed aside for more luxurious, yet soulless resorts in the years ahead.
