The Londoner is a good British-style pub so it goes without saying that they are the spot for good fish 'n chips. What might be surprising is that they also have the best burger in town - big hand-made patties. We've tried several of their dishes and can heartily recommend the Smithfield Chicken Sandwich and the Old Compton Street pasta as well.
The chicken for the chicken sandwich is grilled and then cut into strips wich makes it more managable to eat. My husband tried it tonight and really liked it, although he said it could have used a little more mayo. The Compton Street pasta dish is a penne pasta in a creamy thyme sauce with mushrooms and tomatoes. You can add chicken if you like, but I didn't. The bread that comes with it is not so good - could sometimes have a bitter taste - but the dish itself is good.
The Londoner is right on the historic downtown square and I believe that it is one of the oldest buildings there (there was a fire in the early 1900's). Do go upstairs if you visit. The downstairs is okay but all the character of the place is really upstairs where the bar is. Original hardwood floors and ceilings testify to its age and add a wonderful "tavern-ish" ambience. Besides restaurant seating, there is a small seating area by the fireplace just in front of the darts area and by the pool table.
(You have to over 18 to go upstairs after 9 and they will card you so be sure to have your ID)
