“Very old and unique.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2011

Our stay was pleasant. Everything about this place is antiquated which gave it a unique character. Karen was a great help to make my 1st wedding aniversary great.

If you like quiet, relaxing and freedom this is your place. Make dinner reservations for a local diner as most of them fill up quick (inside if during the summer). The local shops and antique stores are wonderful but about half close at 5 on Saturday and are closed on Sunday so if you like to shop stay Friday night or get there early Saturday to look around then check in.

It was wonderful from the start. Karen greeted us and gave us some of the history of the house as well as local store/dining info. Sodas and some tasty pastries were provided at leisure throughout the day. The cool thing was that we were given a key to come and go as we please. Had a wonderful dinner at Cafe Malaga (make reservations) and returned to relax and watch a movie in our room. We got up for a delicious breakfast and then took a nap before check out. My wife loved it. We'll definitely be back in the fall sometime to enjoy the scenery and hit some of the downtown shops that were closed on Sunday.

Room Tip: Just look at the different rooms online to see which one fits you best.

This is a lovely property with very clean and well maintained rooms. We stayed in the Heather room and it was quiet and very comfortable. We have stayed in other B&Bs where the bathrooms were perhaps a little old and the showers didn't work well but our room at the Tartan Thistle had a lovely bathroom with an excellent shower. There was a hairdryer in the bathroom and a lovely assortment of shower and bath gels. They also provided sodas and bottled water with ice at all times (or tea, etc.). There were always snacks (wonderful cookies and chocolates as well as fruit) so we lacked for nothing. Our hosts were friendly and the breakfasts were wonderful! I would definitely recommend a stay at this B&B.

Wow! Karen can cook! This is a Bed & Breakfast that deserves both Capital B's! They have saved a fabulous "painted Lady" with all of its Victorian Splendor plus they provide a delightful and authentic stay in a Texas town loaded with charm. We were so happy to see that McKinney has bloomed where most small towns have floundered. Be prepared to eat well and enjoy a proud heritage.

My husband and I have stayed at The Tartan Thistle every year for the last three years on our anniversary and have also taken my in-laws for a birthday weekend. Karen and Tom are so sweet and always have great suggestions for places to see and restaurants in the area. They also know so much of the history of the area, which was wonderful to listen to. The food was SO good and very satisfying. Karen even made my husbands grandmother a surprise cake on her birthday! We highly recommend The Tartan Thistle to anyone who wants a fun, relaxing vacation in a beautiful home with wonderful hosts!
