“Though a Chain...”

This is the closest you will get to authentic mexican food. Although they have the traditional "Tex-Mex" dishes which is really Texas Food, their menu specialties are true mexican dishes.

Can be very crowded on football weekends. They have a large outdoor beer garden. On weekends they usually have some band playing there. Great time on a summer or fall evening.

“Good service but disappointing food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2009

I tried Abuelo's after reading several reviews on TripAdvisor and was disappointed. I sat at the bar and the bartender, Tanner, was very good - friendly, attentive and fast. He brought out chips and two salsa - regular which was a little smoky and a spicy Habanero salsa which was very tasty. I order the fajita tacos in corn tortillas instead of the flour tortillas on the menu along with papas con chile and refried beans. The tortillas were very greasy and seemed like they were pulled from the package and dipped in oil then loaded with a gooey carne asada mixture. The mashed potatoes with chilis and refried beans were good but the tacos were all but inedible.
I liked the atmosphere and the service was good but the food was uneven. Next time I'd try another Mexican restaurant.

“The standard”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2009

Really surprised by the negative reviews....I have been eating here for years. It is a rare local institution that really deserves it. I use to gripe about this place( the long waits and unimaginative menu), but after years of consistency and comparisons, I have to say this is the benchmark to all mid-price family tex-mex place in town.

The chips are always warm, crispy and light....salsa is fresh and the rotating soups are good, entrees are dependable and not too pricey,
desserts are really good...especially the tres leches cake and the flan, which really cannot be missed.

The enchiladas always come out fresh and bubbly hot, lots of combos, good lunch specials, good seafood entrees for a texmex place, the drinks are strong, and even the service is pretty good for a college town. Sit in the patio if the weather is nice, and they always have bands or different specials during holidays or themes.

There must be a reason why this is the flagship of a chain that now have over 60 stores. And it all started right here in LBK at this location.

I hope we can keep supporting this establishment especailly since the corporate office is here and it helps the local ecnomy during this recession.

I have eaten here more than 2 dozen times and never had a problem, and whenever there were minor glitches, it was always taken care of promptly by the staff or managers. My first choice for treating out of town guests.

we have eaten at the dallas area abeulos for years and loved them. moving to lubbock we were glad to see an abeulo. wow! WHAT A DISASTER! in three visits over 6 months there were major problems every time. twice the food was cold [after a warning of "hot plate'] ha! the plate was cool and the food barely heated. and then it took almost an hour to get a fresh dinner. third time a "medium rare" steak was ordered, it could have been used as a hockey puck , beyond well done, and again it took almost an hour to send a fresh dinner out. all three times i was told they were having trouble with their ovens. guess what-that food should not have left the kitchen!. we had company and it truly spoiled the evening to get inedible food, have to hunt down a waiter then be expected to wait an hour for a fresh plate. i will not eat there again. my question, why did i go back? just fooled by the atmosphere and could not believe they would not get their act together.

“Interesting menu”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2009

I have been to Abuelos 3 times. The service is very good, the mugs of Mexican beer ice cold and the food very interesting. Its not your typical Tex Mex restaurant. There is live entertainment out on the patio many nights and the weather can be very nice here in Lubbock at night. No matter how warm the day is, there is an excellent chance you will have a cool night because of the altitude. Prices are very good and this might be one of the best Mexican restaurants in town...
