This place was absolutely terrible outside of the relatively cheap price. Don't be fooled by the apparent value though, you will still be overpaying as I would have rather have camped out and showered at a truck stop. My lasting impression was the extreme saturation level of cigarette smoke, which made my pillow smell like an ashtray with 10,000 cigarette butts in it, which consequently was the last sensation I had each night when I fell asleep.
When I checked in at 7PM, I was told that housekeeping still had yet to clean the room, and that my room would be unavailable for another 30 minutes. While I was planning to go out to dinner, this was not the worst thing, but it was still an inconvenience as I had already unloaded my bags into the lobby and had to put them back into the car. Otherwise, the front desk staff was generally helpful and courteous in everything else they did.
The first impression of the hotel past the front desk was the awful aroma interplay of cleaning chemicals and cigarette smoke. The cleaning chemical smell was strongest near the maid's closet, and it was almost strong enough to knock you over; it smelled like you were inside a bottle of bleach while someone doused you in Pine-Sol. Now I grew up in a house where my parents both smoked a pack a day of cigarettes in the house, but once I got into my room, the heavy stench of stale smoke residue was almost unbearable. I never got used to the smell the entire stay due to its unique intensity.
The climate control in my room was barely operable. The rotary dial that controlled the fan speed was broken and would only work if it was on full power and with the heat/cool set to the coldest setting. This left us with the option of sleeping with it being 80F (the ambient in the hotel) or 55F (the steady state temp of the climate control). You might say, why didn't you crack the window for some fresh Lubbock air?
If you are offered the choice, DO NOT get a room that faces the freeway. This is a heavily traveled thoroughfare 7x24. The sound insulation in the room is poor, and even with the windows shut and the AC on, you can still make out individual vehicles on the freeway as they go by, and determine if they are heavy trucks or light vehicles as you lay in your bed in the dark. Forget about opening the windows for some fresh air; you are merely 100 yds from the freeway with no bushes or other soundbreak to break up the noise.
The bed was one of the worst I have ever slept on. Comparable to an army cot and a burlap sack. The sheets were rough, stiff, and threadbare. The comforter was paper thin and well worn. Add in the fact that the fabric and pillows were saturated with cigarette smoke, and every time your head was not pointing directly towards the ceiling, you would kick up some cigarette smoke residue and get a fresh whiff of the virtual ashtray that is your bed. The bed was VERY firm, and was similar to sleeping on the ground with a 2" foam mat.
The sound insulation in the building was very poor, and you could hear people walking around, doors opening and closing, and even conversations at seemingly all hours of the day.
The room was generally "dirty" as in there were stains on the carpet and furniture, furniture dinged up, etc. This place is in need of a little TLC.
The things that were not so bad were the TV, the bathroom, towels, and the kitchen. These items were commensurate with the price of the room.
You might get lucky and get a room that is not smoked in, get sheets that have been cleaned, get a room not facing the freeway, and stay during a light day so that you don't hear the comings and goings of the hotel. However, I'm guessing the rooms that are approaching decent are taken up by the regulars (consultants and the like) that stay there on a regular basis, and that regular travelers will lose the crappy room lottery. I would avoid this hotel at all costs.
